NFT: Ex techie needs help

rnargi : 7/28/2020 4:48 pm
I used to be very into high tech and computer stuff but over the years I've let a lot go. I could not believe how much had changed when I simply wanted to get a good TV last year. It was mind boggling. Now, I'd like to get a VPN and although there is a TON of info on the net, and lots of options, I have no clue which to purchase. I would like to be able to keep using Netflix and APrime, and now understand that they might be blocked when using a VPN. Also, I have an Orbi set up (thanks to recommendations here) and I see where you can set this up on the router. Sounds like the smart move to me, but I really don't know. So my question: Does anyone here have good recommendations not only on what VPN service to get, but the best way to install it so all devices in the house are covered? Or should I just put it on my laptop and call it a day? Thanks in advance! And yeah, it sucks getting old.
Check your router config

I use a wired/wifi router and have the option to create a VPN. I don't currently have it configured to do so but it's possible. The more I think about it the more I need to get off my ass and set it up. I don't like having each connected device broadcasting on a publicly visible IP
Orbi VPN

I checked the Orbi config I have and there is an option to setup a VPN for clients to connect to. I don't think this is what you are looking for.

The Orbi has an option to buy bitdefender and install it on the router and unlimited clients. That covers Tablets, Computers, and Phones. That comes with 200m/month VPN service with geo switching capabilities.

Bitdefender also offers a standalone VPN service that is about $50 a year. BitDefender VPN

I have had some friend that have used Witopia and spoke highly of it.

I run the VPN locally on the machine

I have Norton and it has a VPN to install -- they are offering $50 for the year.
there are times I have to turn it off as certain website linked from google will not connect and some work email needs to know where I am located.

Thus why I like locally.

Agree Orbi is great!
I assume you're asking about a VPN Client

I use Express VPN. They have lots of servers all over the world. They're fast and reliable. They've offered good support when I need it. Streaming services are a PITA because they'll block the VPN IP's they know about. Starz is the worst. Other than that I've usually been able to use Express VPN with Amazon, Disney, Hulu and Peacock. I don't have Netflix.
Highly recommend

NordVPN
Pi-Hole

Pi-hole is a server that I run on a raspberry pi. You can then do a static ip assignment and make your Orbi point to that as the DNS server. With this you get ad blocking at a network level.

You can then make your upstream DNS server something like Smart DNS Proxy that can be used to unblock geo blocked things.
I'm in the same boat...
