I was told at the information desk this morning there is some hockey on tonight? I see the Rangers are playing the Islanders in Toronto on MSG. 8 PM. Is this real?
What do we think? How will all of this transpire? Your guess is as bad as mine. Don't pull something, everyone.
stanley cup playoffs start saturday.
This could be the single redeeming feature of 2020.
Canadians are civil citizens, no?

I'll be at Topsail this weekend, but I am for sure going to watch Canes-Rangers...noon start?
a 5 month hiatus doesn't magically make a bad team good. Montreal showed last night they are not a playoff team and all the warts from March are still there, expect they were sellers at the deadline, dealing a top 4 D and a 4th line, and it showed.
To summarize, bad teams will still be bad 5 months later.

Unless you are in Canada, of course. In this country, im not really sure what they are supposed to do other than flood the airwaves with commercials. No one ever mentions the sport on any of the tv/radio shows-as I understand it, hockey is death to ratings- and unless you watch the NHL Network or read the Athletic you would really have no idea whatsoever what is going on around the league. Its just how it is I guess -ive come to accept is over my past 44 years as a fan.
I watched the two preseason games last night, and....this is gonna take some getting used to. Really miss the fan reactions. And it will be much worse when the playoffs start- ive always felt that the home crowds are a good part of what makes the playoffs great. Watching those games last night was similar to watching a junior tournament game in Europe when there are about 20 people in the arena...like I said, gonna take some getting used to.
I know a lot of people don't mind that with MLB, but it bothers me. I get the same reaction from watching some of the clown-show comedies on TV that have the fake audience laughter. It usually means the show need to tell people when to laugh...

Yes, last night they did. Crowd noise, goal horn, etc.

are they pumping crowd noise into the arenas?

Yeah I thought the experience was about as good as it can be. The announcers are in the booth (spaced apart), and lots of empty seats have been covered up and giant video screens have been added.
First Game In NHL Bubble Looks And Sounds … Fantastic - ( New Window )
it was only for goals though or select plays (the crowd noise), so you could hear some players chirping which was kind of cool.

During one of the games last night (I forget which), someone commented that it had the feel of the Winter Classic or one of the outdoor games, which I definitely agree with.
It is added to the broadcast.

Thanks, I didn't realize it. Makes sense though. How is the referee penalty announcements made? It seemed like the refs didn't have mics.
I saw Wes McCauley go to turn his microphone on - attached to his waist, but it wasn't there. I too heard him call penalties, but thought without a crowd maybe there was some other way they were doing it - like maybe just with the microphones they have to capture the game sounds. I heard about 5 f-bombs from players.
I don't know if it's new but I read they added cameras to the 4 corner boards - not sure if they were pointed at the goal/goal line or somewhere else, but I think there's definitely going to be some new looks.
Both broadcasters will also be using a JitaCam, which is a camera on a large, 360-degree crane positioned over the ice.
Microphones will be placed throughout each arena, including at ice level, to pick up more sounds from the game. The NHL has also worked with each of the 24 participating teams to collect audio unique to their home venues, including goal horns, music compilations and fan chants.
In addition, the NHL has constructed a rink-wide stage covering empty seats behind team benches that will feature LED screens, monitors and banners. Regional networks covering the games in the qualifiers and first round of the playoffs will be able to use virtual advertisements on the glass behind each goal....
It's EA that is providing the crowd noise.
Personally, I find the crowd noise to be really cringe inducing but they didn't go too overboard with it at least in the game I watched so it's not as bad as I thought it might be. Hopefully they don't ramp it up for the actual tourney.
the cringiest thing about it was one of the Leafs goals the goal horn delayed for about 6 seconds after the goal (a short-handed goal) and then went off and the players were even done celebrating.
that seemed awkward, but I didn't think it was over the top in their use of it.

My theory is that raw talent will matter more to begin with than usual because of the layoff.
(I'm going to be immediately proven wrong, aren't I?)
This can't be real, right?
I did read a Claude Julien comment that he was worried about fights at the hotel among rivals, but I thought he was being funny when he said that. I'd beat the hell out of Marchand though.

#Bruins F Brad Marchand has been warned to stop pressing all the elevator floor buttons prior to offloading.
I think they may win a round or two if they gel quickly, but the bottom six and defense is too weak for them to win the Cup this year.
Shesterkin plays the first half of the game. Lundqvist will finish.
Killed it. lGR
Dude, Zibanejad was on fucking fire heading into the stoppage. 23 goals in 22 games. Including that 5 goal game against the Caps.
Kakko looked pretty good, as did Gauthier.
Yeah, credit to the Islanders for playing strong defense, but the Rangers barely made the goalies work at all.
Then they each play the first round playoff winners?
It’s good but only because the bye teams still play and can keep fresh.
