Alex Smith will have "shot" at WFT's starting QB role

DC Gmen Fan : 7/29/2020 11:47 am
As much as I hate the WFT, I am really happy for Alex Smith. Considering what he has endured, not only coming close to losing his life, much less his leg, he now has the opportunity to "compete" for the starting QB job.

It's a truly remarkable story and it's hard not to root for the guy.

He was places on the PUP list to start.

As of now this just sounds like coachspeak. But, with that said, why wouldn't he be in the mix? It only pushes Haskins.

True, and I honestly don't really even see him playing, but I'm more impressed just by the guy's desire and drive to rehabilitate and get back to this level...esp at 36.
Given their current state of name

perhaps what fuck the is apropos.
I always thought he was much better than he was given credit for

his first 5 years in SF were a circus carousel of HC, OCs and systems. When that stabilized he played well and continued it in KC and WAS
Good

The Giants will need those 2 wins against Washington this season.

The DC Team Should Be

Washington Team, Football and have “WTF” on their helmets.
I give him
jestersdead : 7/29/2020 12:33 pm : link
a lot of credit for his accomplishments post surgery (17 of them) but doing drills and throwing is not the same as taking that first hit in the pocket or scrambling and someone catches you from behind.

Best of luck
They may be a better team with him starting

Why not if you're Rivera
Torrag : 7/29/2020 1:49 pm : link
His record and experience dwarf both Haskins and Allen.

Don't really know if he helps or hurts them

If he plays well and wins the job and Haskins sits. Haskins doesn't get playing time to learn, and another year goes off his rookie contract. However, if Smith plays well, he could make them better and who gives a crap about Haskins he cost peanuts, Smith is costing 21mil, 32mil if cut. Another positive for them could be Haskins sitting and learning from Smith and taking over the following year more prepared. Cutting Smith at that point would be 10mil dead money, saving about 14mil on the cap. But again if he's playing at a high level pay him the 24mil and don't worry about the wasted 1st round pick sitting.

Would best case for the Giants be a QB comp that is back and forth with no clear winner. They pick Smith and Haskins has a complete melt down? Smith plays adequate and retires at the end of the season. WFT is then left searching for their QB of the future again???
If he doesn't look like the second coming,
MOOPS : 7/29/2020 3:11 pm : link
I could actually see the WFTards cutting Smith this year.
They have the room now to absorb the dead cap hit and if the cap does drop to $175M or there abouts next year, his $10M dead cap hit might hurt worse then.
At least something for them to think about.
Rivera is coming to a new team
GManinDC : 7/29/2020 3:18 pm : link
With a lot of young talent. Of course he is going to want a veteran to work with at first to see what he got. That gives the rookie more time to learn another playbook and the NFL!!

I wouldn't be surprised if Rivera turns into a GM/Coach. They have a lot of FO vacancies with scandals and departures.

Smith is a seson vet, been around quite a few teams with various offenses. he'll adapt a lot faster then Haskins..

On his ordeal on (NFLN?). That was some horrendous shit. Can’t help but to pull for him.
I saw an ESPN E60 episode on his

injury and recovery earlier this month. They showed hospital photos of his infected lower leg and then what was left after the doctors removed all of the infected tissue and bone. It was worse than if he had been the victim of a shark attack.
You can't help but root for the guy because he's worked his ass off, but I wish he wasn't doing this. He's got a beautiful wife and kids. He doesn't need to go back on the field. He's been thru enough.

I saw that documentary too. It is truly amazing he is even back on the field. His leg was a disaster, and I am putting that mildly.
There is no chance
Jerz44 : 7/29/2020 10:54 pm : link
he makes the team or plays ever again, unless they do it to honor him.

People with pilon fractures are lucky to walk without a limp. There's no way this dude's playing again.

Well said ... Haskins is the future for the Redskins and Alex should take 1 snap in practice to cap his recovery and call it a career. You can’t buy health.
They should have a sense of humor about it...
Milton : 7/30/2020 10:46 am : link
And go with the WTF's as their nickname. They don't have to spell it out, just call themselves the Washington WTF's.
For now, he's on the PUP list
Greg from LI : 7/30/2020 10:51 am : link
Count me as another who doesn't think he'll make it back. He's 36, hasn't played since November 2018, and practice time will be very limited.

Seems like a win that he can even walk after that injury. Would be amazing if he could play again but I don't see it happening.
