The eight-game suspension for Joe Kelly in a 60-game season is the equivalent of a 22-game suspension in a 162-game season. Seems…harsh

Finally justice is served.
For throwing at Bergman.
redwhiteandbigblue : 7/29/2020 6:15 pm : link
Worth the suspension. The 8 games is probably a warning to others going after Astros hitters.
Kelly is the definition of punk
shyster : 7/29/2020 6:21 pm : link
He was not on the Dodgers' team that lost to the Astros.

He was on the Sox team that cheated its way to a title

And he's going to appoint himself the enforcer of principle?

Give me break.
Yeah, I wish someone other than Rec Specs Kelly

did it - clown that he is. But I enjoyed the skirmish.

No sympathy for the Astros
HomerJones45 : 7/29/2020 8:42 pm : link
Kelly probably got a few more games for telling Correa "nice swing" and making a pouty face as he walked off the mound. Laughed my ass off but I guess the Commissioner took that into account.
To the Op

It had zero to do with protecting Astros

And everything to do... everything to do.... with avoiding bench clearing incidents without masks that will lead to outbreaks and more team pauses

It was absolutely the right decision. You don’t settle old scores in the middle of a pandemic with everyone just trying to feed their families this year - not just players but everyone affiliated with sports from mlb office to announcers to media to stadium crew.

Settle that shit in 2021

I was being sarcastic about the atros players evading any punishment and now the MLB saying pitchers who seek retribution will be quelled.

While you are basically right about spreading the virus, 2021 is too late. Nobody will give a shit by then. Plus the League is absolutely protecting the Astros. The League effed up by not dishing out any punishment to any players. The players want some justice.

i'm not a fan of Kelly - period

but that clown show last night was embarrassing. He actually made the Astros players look like men.

You drill the first player you see right in the @ss. Head hunting has no place in the game.

Well we’ll know when a pitcher in coming weeks throws at a player or two for an incident earlier in a game or in a prior series. Will see if Manfred hands out 8 games. If not then I stand corrected

My sense is the league wants players to wake up and want to get through this regular season as calmly as possible - the money is in the postseason. A Dodgers - astros brawl risks another ‘pause’ and then it’s media chaos and everyone’s salaries are at risk.

he will have been punished more severely than all of the plays who have cheated via illegal sign stealing. Combined.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Not only will people still care in 2021, baseball players never forget.

I'm reminded of a story told by Jim Bouton in one of his books (either Ball Four or a follow-up book) about a batter who got drilled in a game for no apparent reason.

The batter the gave the pitcher a "WTF was that for" look and the pitcher shouted out something like, "Albuquerque-62" referencing an incident that happened years ago in the minors.

The batter then immediately recalled the incident and simply went down to first base.
Kelly is a dick, but I'm glad he did it. It sucks that HOU gets

Hmm, good point. The Sawx and fans were still pissy over Ruth being traded 90 years before.....

Are people seriously this dense? They are protecting people from having 95+ mph fastballs thrown at their head.
I will never endorse headhunting in baseball
PaulBlakeTSU : 7/30/2020 9:39 am : link
and I'm also not a fan of intentionally throwing at guys period, because no pitcher has perfect control and the pitch could easily hit a guy on the wrist or somewhere that takes him out of commission for a long time.

I also disagree with the idea that Joe Kelly doesn't have standing to be pissed just because he wasn't on the Dodgers. The Dodgers weren't the only team to be screwed by the Astros cheating. All the teams they beat in the playoffs were earlier victims, and in fact, anyone in the league should be pissed at the Astros for ruining the integrity of fair competition.

But I agree with MAB that this lengthy suspension was in large part due to prevent bench clearing during the pandemic.

I do hope there is a way that the Astros get comeuppance for their blatant cheating and the idea that they can keep their championship is appalling.
No, the Dodgers weren't the only team victimized
Greg from LI : 7/30/2020 9:52 am : link
But then, the Astros weren't the only team cheating, either. Joe Kelly's former team was as well.
I'll just go ahead and leave this here
Greg from LI : 7/30/2020 10:02 am : link

The players are not going to forget this stuff anytime soon. It's going to follow the 2017 Astros for as long as those guys are in MLB.
Manfred
PaulN : 7/30/2020 10:24 am : link
Fucked this up royally, and now the players feel they need to do what a gutless commishioner didn't, Kelly is on the team now and was on Boston in 2017, the hate for Kelly from the usual ones, but this commishioner could have solved the entire issue without 1 fine or suspension, all he needed to do is pull the championship from Houston and leave the season without a champion. It still would have left some teams and people pissed, the writers full of criticism, but it would have punished a cheating TEAM, people would have been left to make up thier own minds, just like we are left in the steroid era. Baseball had another chance to right a wrong they themselves are responsible for and instead did the worst thing they could have done, blamed a few people that were not even doing the cheating, baseball is as always, clueless, lets juice the baseballs again and continue to instruct everyone to tell us how we are seeing greatest players ever, while they are striking out, real excitement.

.

Yeah, and Manfred didn't hold anybody accountable,
besides the video guy. No suspensions, no fines for
John Henry or Tom Werner, just a mild slap on the hand.
The only good from that was you can't look at video during
the game now, afterwards yes, but not during games.
It wouldn't surprise me if they bring Cora back next year. I think Roenicke is just a stopgap, good guy though, good baseball man.
