Carolina Panthers parting ways with PK Graham Gano

Anakim : 7/30/2020 11:55 am
They're going with former Giant Joey Slye

Kick the tires? I'd imagine he's more reliable than Catanzaro - ( New Window )
Scottish-American like Lawrence Tynes

Was absolutely lights out in 2017 (made the Pro Bowl)
Absolutely a step up from Catanzaro

I know he had an injury one year which affected his production.

Gano spent all of 2019, his 11th NFL season, on injured reserve with a leg injury. He had been very good in the two seasons leading up to his injury including a Pro Bowl selection in 2017. Between 2017 and 2018 Gano’s 93.5 percent (43 of 46) field goal percentage ranked second in the league and two of his three misses were from beyond 50 yards. Between 2017 and 2018 he went 40 of 41 from less than 50 yards.

I remember when he hit that 60+ yarder against us to win the game for Carolina. The bastid.

I mean if he's healthy, it's a bit of a no-brainer, no? I mean someone better might shake loose in the coming weeks, but Gano has definitely more of a track record than Catanzaro.

Gano is definitely a guy you look at.

Now, health and price matter but I'd rather take my chances with Gano than Catanzaro.
No brainer.

There were reports back in 2018 that Giants were targeting Graham Gano in free agency before he re-signed in Carolina.
Plenty of familiarity there as well with Thomas McGaughey and, of course, Dave Gettleman, who was GM with Gano for 5 years.

Chandler Catanzaro vs. Gano?

I can't see this move not being made, but I was surprised by Catanzaro over Gostkowski

Are we envisioning a qualifying veteran-minimum deal?

Even at his best, Gano would probably not make a major difference on this Giant team, in the circumstances of the 2020 season. As it is, he's a medical question mark who has been sidelined by a leg injury since late 2018.

If Gano in his current condition isn't worth $2.75MM to the Panthers, whose current alternative is Joey Slye, he probably isn't worth a lot to the Giants either. Kick the tires? Sure. But if he were still the Graham Gano of 2017, he'd still be a Panther.
