DeAngelo is a game-time decision. If he can't go, Hajek will suit up (God help us).

We don't know who will be starting in goal for either team today, but we do know the March to the Cup (or to Alexis Lafrenniere) begins in 70 minutes. Go Rangers!

No, one more season for each.

But relatively speaking that's not so bad, since Girardi and Shatty are both on the books for three more.

I guess we are tanking on purpose. Hank omg arguably the worst goalie of the three. How is the kid not ready? I’m lost for words. I hope I eat them and I’m wrong. I would think it would take an older goalie more time to be sharp as the reflexes are not the same.

ColHowPepper : 8/1/2020 12:45 pm : link
It did not augur well, even if credit goes to the Isles d, a Trotz specialty. Just now, on that PP they had at ~10 minutes mark, a lot of hesitancy, trying to be too perfect again.

This team was functioning on a chemistry, all parts working together high February and March, no signs yet that it is ready to kick in. Playoff hockey is playoff hockey, even w/the covid layoff.

Period One
Percy : 8/1/2020 12:53 pm : link
Rangers badly out-quicked and outplayed by the Canes. Only two shots on goal, seemed to me. Lundqvist recovered himself after letting in the very first shot and played alertly fighting off many tries by the Canes after that. Rangers have to come out bringing it in the next period.
The last minute or two were a bit better.
Mad Mike : 8/1/2020 1:01 pm : link
Hopefully that carries over. I don't want to watch another period like that one.
Percy
ColHowPepper : 8/1/2020 1:11 pm : link
if we are getting outquicked to the puck by the Canes--and I think you're right, they were--that means our skating, where we allegedly have an advantage and is why we were 4-0 vs Canes regular season--was non-existent.

Anak: agree, Kreider, Zib, Panarin nearly invisible

I would add Buch as a + player, neutral or better

Havent seen this addressed yet, but regarding NHL injuries for these playoffs, ANY injury, absence, whatever, is going to be labeled "unfit to play". Does not mean the guy was out getting hammered and is now hung over, just out of jail, anything like that. Could be a broken nail, could be a broken leg, but whatever it is, he is unfit to play.

part of me still looks at this SC Playoffs appearance
ColHowPepper : 8/1/2020 3:33 pm : link
as playing with house money, so I am not bummed to my core. It was not something I expected at the beginning or middle of the season, though certainly expectations were raised in the last ~30 games until the pause.

One clear positive: KK, as somewhat expected, has come back rejuvenated. He had so many games 2019 (incl. the Worlds) and 2020, he was exhausted and any adjustment was too much too soon for a teenager.

He has stopped being a 'deer-in-the-headlights' player, he is willing and eager to be the guy with the puck and make plays. Maybe most significantly--as exemplified by his rush into Canes end and retrieving the puck at their goal line and firing the puck from an impossible angle (that still gave Mzarek trouble)--he showed a burst of speed and skating that he just did not demonstrate during the season.

Gauthier too, more involved, more ice time, of course Fast's absence had something to do with that.

McKegg is awful; he and Howden are borderline NHLers at best.
Chicago doesn't seem to have any rust. 3-1.
Route 9 : 8/1/2020 3:46 pm : link
and not even midway through the first period
The culprits, worst of the worst
Torrag : 8/1/2020 3:49 pm : link
DeAngelo isn't an NHL defenseman. Move him to wing and save us the headaches. McKegg is so bad he should be in the AHL...forever. Chytil did nothing right and saw the ice like a blind man. If McKegg belongs in the AHL I'm not sure where Giuseppe belongs because he's even worse.

My 'For Shame' player is Adam Fox? Why? Because he was as bad as anyone on the team but he has real talent so there's no excuse for it.

Quinn better figure out how to get people on the ice that can contribute or this is going to be a short series and on to the links.
I had such high expectation .....

I've been rooting for the Rangers since he late 60's. They're still missing a lot of important pieces if they want to build a power house. Maybe some are waiting below the NHL level right now maybe not. I'd rather they win the lottery than this tournament.
You don't have to get your hopes too high.

I don't want to get ahead of myself, but just watching Brett Howden
Anakim : 8/1/2020 7:45 pm : link
today and watching Libor Hajek all season in the bigs. What the hell was Gorton thinking with that McDonagh/Miller trade? What did the scouts see in Hajek and Howden? When we traded for them, everyone said that they were low-ceiling players. As of now, they're both borderline NHL players.

So we traded a top-pair guy in McDonagh and a top-6 F in Miller for two low-ceiling prospects who are now borderline NHL players, a late first rounder (we'll see how Nils Lundkvist fares in 2022) and a second rounder.

It's not Porzings trade-bad, but that was a horrible deal. The Staal trade was bad. The Smith trade was bad. The Trouba trade looks like it'll be a REAL clunker. Paying 8M per for 7 years for average play isn't going to cut it. Meanwhile, Pionk has found his game in Winnipeg and the first round pick they got from us was used on a promising defenseman named Ville Heinola.

But Zibanejad and Panarin have done nothing 5 on 5.

Isn't that the whole team?

So uh, is this Kaapo Kakko character
Route 9 : 8/3/2020 2:16 pm : link
going to bury one, or what? I keep hearing about how great he's doing. Would be nice to see a goal.
Kakko is a teenager
Greg from LI : 8/3/2020 2:18 pm : link
He's the least of their problems. How about their All-Star forwards? Be nice if they could create some chances. How about Chris Kreider and his giant salary extension?
Well, he is on the ice with the rest of them.
Route 9 : 8/3/2020 2:20 pm : link
Lol. Those guys piss me off, too. Especially Kreider.

You need goals to win. No?

Carolina is not giving the Rangers an inch.
Stellar job passing by the Rangers

They're just dead out there
Greg from LI : 8/3/2020 2:26 pm : link
No life at all
What garbage lol
Route 9 : 8/3/2020 2:27 pm : link
Rangers looks like they're playing the 2000 Devils. Don't even show up for the 3rd game.
The forecheck has been terrible
figgy2989 : 8/3/2020 2:27 pm : link
They win no loose puck battles.

Just lifeless
The only two players who looked semi-decent were Kakko and Gauthier
Anakim : 8/3/2020 2:28 pm : link
And I don't even think Gauthier saw the ice in the third, which I have no idea why
Strome is terrible

Great effort by the Quinn squad

This is Lindy Ruff's fault.

Same old Rangers. Same old trash.

7 more years of Trouba and Kreider with those huge contracts

God, I'm getting Girardi/Staal vibes...

I think it's easier if you listed the Ranger contracts over the year that weren't absurd.
