It's great to have MLB back and we all hope that it lasts. But if you're a Yankee fan, the 2020 regular season is almost like one long exhibition season.
That’s because 8 of the 15 teams in each league will make the playoffs this year and let’s face it. There is very little chance that the Yanks finish out of the top 8 teams in the AL.
If the team with the best regular season record in each league got a first round bye, there would be something to play for. But the only advantage best record gets you in 2020 is three home games in an empty stadium.
I’m not saying the ballplayers should treat the regular season like the games don’t matter as much. They should stay focused, play hard to win every game and hope that their excellent play carries over to the playoffs.
But as a Yankee fan watching these games it is just now occurring to me that the next meaningful Yankee game probably won’t be until game 1 of the playoffs.
Not even sure what you mean by that comment, but it sounds like you're the one complaining. (So I guess in a way, you're right ;>)
I'm just making an observation that with the Yankees' talent and depth, they should have no problem finishing with a "top 8" record. And as such, their next meaningful game will be in the playoffs.
No travel, sleep in own bed, same routine, familiar surroundings.
There are factors other than fans that make home field advantage an important one

I never said that there were no advantages. But sleeping in your own bed and familiar surroundings just isn't enough of a reward for finishing with the best rcord in the league.
Except Gardy of course! Bench him!! :-)
His response was: because the fans aren't ahead of the drama.
And that's the point; we watch sports because we don't know how it's going to turn out.
A good deal of "standard" entertainment lacks that appeal. We have a pretty good idea, going in, that Tom Cruise will accomplish his supposedly impossible mission.
MLB owners, in their greed, have messed with the principle and, indeed, there really isn't any reason to watch until October.
The interview with Allen was a number of years ago, before his Knicks descended into the realm of the all-too-predictable negative outcome.

Get off my damn lawn!!!!
On a side note, I’m not thrilled the way the Yankees are not social distancing. They are still high fiveing after home runs. They are not having players sit in stands that are not playing. In the Baltimore series Tyler wade was in the dugout without a mask in the 2nd inning. Their is no need for him to be in the dugout. During opening ceremonies all red Sox starters were wearing a mask as they were introduced and not one Yankee was. It might be petty. I just don’t want this season to be derailed for something so simple to do. The dodgers are doing it right. When they are on offense the pitching coach needs to leave the dugout and on defense the hitting coach needs to leave the dugout. Also, if your not in the game you cannot be in the dugout.
[quote] Think home field advantage is big when it comes to late innings and extra innings (in playoffs, where they will not have an inning with someone already on 2nd base) you get an idea if you need to use your closer. Also you esencially get 6 outs to the road teams 3 outs if you are able to get out of the top of that inning without giving up a run.

They are outside, they are young and not thinking about the virus 24/7 like some.
Virus is much more contagious inside for extends periods.
Played in a 3 day golf tournament this weekend, all activities outside. Very few were wearing masks, except to enter clubhouse.
Even eating, in outdoor patio, once seated masks came off.
You can get upset by these players, your choice, I ve not even noticed the things you referenced.
+1 exactly how I feel

outdoors definitely helps. I also play golf and no mask. However, no sharing cart. I just wo7ld hate to see something so simple to do that a lot of other teams are doing, like not high fiveing that can cause MAYBE an outbreak. Just want them to be cautious.
I agree
