Not looking for a conversation on if it should be banned. But, could someone explain to a nontechie how it could be banned. If someone had the app on their phone, would it disappear or would the app stop working. Would it just happen to new customers? Would it be on the honor system? Would Apple and Samsung and other companies have to turn off the app? I’m not understanding how these things work.
Apple and Google could theoretically disable existing TikTok apps, but would almost certainly not do so without a court order. It’s unclear there’s any authority for such a order.
That works because the casinos implement it. They set up the geofence and don’t accept wagers from those outside it.
So TikTok would have to set up a geofence and block anyone in the US. They have no incentive to do that.

like they do with New Jersey gambling apps?

Got it! Thanks!
So doing so is easy but I’m guessing they wouldn’t do it willingly.

President has the authority to do it. No different than any other company seeking products that threaten national security

It’s different because it’s software and it’s free. He can probably compel Apple and Google stop allowing downloads. but getting people who already have it or who sideload the app to stop using it is something else.
Have they? I’m not aware of other instances where they’ve compelled all ISPs to block traffic to a particular site/app. Certainly brings 1st Amendment issues into play.

They do it all the time. If they ban it...poof it will be gone like it never existed.

Yep. Many bittorrent sites have been shut down and blocked in this manner. A whole lot of kids though are going to become familiar with VPN’s very quickly!

Yes, but that’s not done by federal directive. ISPs certainly can and have blocked sites, but I’m not aware they’ve ever been ordered to.
Why would this be different? Apple and Google removed the apps from the app store in India.
and users can't connect for the apps to work.
I've had apps on my phone that had been discontinued and no longer worked. I would imagine this being similar.
Shouldn't the knowledge that a foreign government is illegally using your likeness be enough to get users to stop using the app?!
As for blocking traffic, the govt would look to secure cooperation from USA ISPs.

No, common sense isn't the strong suit of a population this size. And TikTok is dominated by the teenage crowd who are "invincible". Basically compare it to all the dumb shit you did as a kid and how even good parenting wouldn't matter - same deal here. Tell a kid their info will get stolen and they won't listen or won't care. So then its on the parents to delete their apps and control their phones? Not happening.
