BREAKING: The Mets don't know where Yoenis Cespedes is.

Team statement: "As of game time, Yoenis Céspedes has not reported to the ballpark today. He did not reach out to management with any explanation for his absence. Our attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful."

First of all, I hope he’s ok. Being on the road makes it even more peculiar. I’d have to believe the Mets checked his hotel room to make sure something wasn’t wrong there before making a statement but it’s still a scary situation until we know he’s ok.

Secondly, I don’t know how you Mets fans do it, man. It seems it’s always something with that team. Hopefully Ces is ok.
It is always fucking something with this team.

Don't you have to go through proper and formal protocols to opt out?
moespree : 8/2/2020 3:15 pm : link
If so how would the Mets organization or someone from MLB not know this, to the point where you release a statement saying you don't know where he is?

Interesting timing to trade for an outfielder a few hours before releasing this statement by the way.

By opting out. Saves the Wilpons more money. The more important thing is it gives the younger players a chance to show what they have. The Mets aren’t going anywhere this season

How does the team not know he “opted out” last night? The statement they put out said he didn’t show up today, they don’t know why and they haven’t been able to contact him.

Van Wagenen says Mets had no idea that Yoenis Cespedes was opting out of the season.

Cespedes' agent called the Mets and told them near the end of the game.

"We support every player's right to make this type of decision," Van Wagenen said. "It was surprising, without question."

Everybody has a family member with a pre-existing condition. Hypertension? Arteriosclerosis? Those are so wide spread that it would be unusual for a person not to have contact with someone suffering from those

I think Ces realized he is not 100% and doesn’t want to embarrass himself and lower his value. If his legs don’t improve, I could see him just retiring
I put this completely on Cespedes
Knineteen : 8/3/2020 12:07 am : link
Please stop blaming the Mets.

Cespedes is and always has been a selfish asshole. The "injuries", the inability to speak to reporters, the ability to ranch while recuperating from season-ending injuries, signing a massive contract with the Mets and then stating he wants to end his career with the Oakland A's.

Goodbye, farewell; watch out for those wild elephants.

He made $80 million doing absolutely nothing from 2017 to 2019. He probably has no desire playing this season for a paltry $6 million.

If he received his originally scheduled 2020 contract, you know damn well he'd be on this team right now.
Thank God I'm not a Met fan.

I remember listening to the Fan one day at work and it was a Mets oriented show and I got the feeling this was your "main" guy. All damm day that's who the hosts were talking about. They kept playing Cespedes! to a Jay-Z or 50 cent jingle. Not too sure.

Yuck. Good luck.

There are reports out there now he was upset about lack of playing time and not being able to reach his bonuses. Felt the Mets were doing this intentionally.

Honestly from an outsiders perspective on the way he just left the team and them being unable to reach him, sending security to his room and finding him gone, this sounds more likely than the "opting out because of Covid19" story.

Either way it's a really bad job by him just bolting like he did and not informing the team.
So Cespedes opted out

Eric on Li : 8/3/2020 10:09 am : link
he was definitely nuts before they got him and that's probably in part why he was so successful right away. He thrived in the spotlight and with a lot of attention. Remember riding the horse to spring training and all of his crazy cars? The upside was good when times were good the downside when things went bad was a guy who seemingly couldn't handle it and first opted out for a year and half with the foot surgeries and now again.

The 2nd contract extension was obviously an enormous mistake but to that point he'd been a true difference maker in every sense of the word and they were a team hunting a championship. There was a reason even the omni-patient and risk averse FO gave in and gave him a 4 year mega extension. 99.9% of fans would have done the same and I'm confident if we dug up the old thread it was fairly jubilant. This franchise is just cursed with injuries, or perhaps the wilpons incompetence extends to that areas as well.

Céspedes Injuries
Samiam : 8/3/2020 11:38 am : link
What I don’t understand about his encounters with the wild pigs (really?), he always had problems with his feet and it didnt seem to get diagnosed correctly until he went to his own doctors. It seemed that the team doctors couldn’t or didn’t figure out the problem. Now, Im sure he was examined by top people at HSS or the equivalent. Is what i just wrote the way it happened or am I remembering it wrong?

As I remember it (and some of this I am recalling from what our resident Mets ass hat hinted at) - the Cespedes foot problems were something the team and the player were aware of for a long time but thought surgery was not the correct decision and they could be played through.

The implication being that when things starting going bad with the team on the field, Cespedes decided to use the injuries as an excuse and sort of quit on the team by electing to get the surgeries and sit out for almost 2 years.

Judging by how things went this year that seems pretty in character.

Which of his actions tells you it isn't ONLY about the money?
Which of his actions ever pointed to loving the game, caring about teammates, etc?
Can you think of any actions that would point to the opposite?

Keep this in mind when Yo's team crafts their side of the story to counter the Mets leaks (which they have been more tight-lipped about than usual!). And people start with the "can't trust the Mets version since they always shit on people on their way out the door". Brodie is perhaps the most player friendly GM around, trust their story on this one...

Yes, he was a catalyst in getting the Mets to the 2015 post season but was useless after that.

I don't say this often but the guy just seems like a true quitter. I still think there were probably more net positives with Cespedes than negatives but hard to interpret his actions any other way.

This might be speculation but Rojas seems like a very proactive manager so I wonder if he said something to Cespedes (or the entire team) similar to his honest conversation with Diaz and Cespedes didn't want to face the music. Again.
