Tim Healey @timbhealey · 4m BREAKING: The Mets don't know where Yoenis Cespedes is. Team statement: "As of game time, Yoenis Céspedes has not reported to the ballpark today. He did not reach out to management with any explanation for his absence. Our attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful." |
Secondly, I don’t know how you Mets fans do it, man. It seems it’s always something with that team. Hopefully Ces is ok.
If I was to choose one Met who would be a perfect candidate for such behavior, it would be Cespedes!
Pretty soon all his days will be days off.
Interesting timing to trade for an outfielder a few hours before releasing this statement by the way.

How does the team not know he “opted out” last night? The statement they put out said he didn’t show up today, they don’t know why and they haven’t been able to contact him.

Exactly. It's a clown show over there in Flushing.
It is difficult to believe they would put that statement out just to trash Cespedes and that they actually knew all along what was going on....but nothing would surprise me. Seriously, nothing with them would surprise me.

Van Wagenen says Mets had no idea that Yoenis Cespedes was opting out of the season.
Cespedes' agent called the Mets and told them near the end of the game.
"We support every player's right to make this type of decision," Van Wagenen said. "It was surprising, without question."

Van Wagenen said the #Mets sent security to the team hotel and found that Cespedes stuff was packed and Cespedes was gone.
No.

A source told The Athletic that Céspedes has a family member with a pre-existing condition, and his calculations for playing this season had changed given the outbreaks with other teams.

Everybody has a family member with a pre-existing condition. Hypertension? Arteriosclerosis? Those are so wide spread that it would be unusual for a person not to have contact with someone suffering from those
I think Ces realized he is not 100% and doesn’t want to embarrass himself and lower his value. If his legs don’t improve, I could see him just retiring
Cespedes is and always has been a selfish asshole. The "injuries", the inability to speak to reporters, the ability to ranch while recuperating from season-ending injuries, signing a massive contract with the Mets and then stating he wants to end his career with the Oakland A's.
Goodbye, farewell; watch out for those wild elephants.
He made $80 million doing absolutely nothing from 2017 to 2019. He probably has no desire playing this season for a paltry $6 million.
If he received his originally scheduled 2020 contract, you know damn well he'd be on this team right now.
Yuck. Good luck.

Bobby Bo 2.0
There are reports out there now he was upset about lack of playing time and not being able to reach his bonuses. Felt the Mets were doing this intentionally.
Honestly from an outsiders perspective on the way he just left the team and them being unable to reach him, sending security to his room and finding him gone, this sounds more likely than the "opting out because of Covid19" story.
Either way it's a really bad job by him just bolting like he did and not informing the team.
3 years...nice of him to let the Mets know too!
but it's no secret he's always been viewed as a net negative.
he was on 4 teams in 3 years after being traded to the Mets and this is a guy with some skill.
The 2nd contract extension was obviously an enormous mistake but to that point he'd been a true difference maker in every sense of the word and they were a team hunting a championship. There was a reason even the omni-patient and risk averse FO gave in and gave him a 4 year mega extension. 99.9% of fans would have done the same and I'm confident if we dug up the old thread it was fairly jubilant. This franchise is just cursed with injuries, or perhaps the wilpons incompetence extends to that areas as well.
As I remember it (and some of this I am recalling from what our resident Mets ass hat hinted at) - the Cespedes foot problems were something the team and the player were aware of for a long time but thought surgery was not the correct decision and they could be played through.
The implication being that when things starting going bad with the team on the field, Cespedes decided to use the injuries as an excuse and sort of quit on the team by electing to get the surgeries and sit out for almost 2 years.
Judging by how things went this year that seems pretty in character.
Which of his actions ever pointed to loving the game, caring about teammates, etc?
Can you think of any actions that would point to the opposite?
Keep this in mind when Yo's team crafts their side of the story to counter the Mets leaks (which they have been more tight-lipped about than usual!). And people start with the "can't trust the Mets version since they always shit on people on their way out the door". Brodie is perhaps the most player friendly GM around, trust their story on this one...
From August to September.
He did jack-shit in the post season. Batted .150 in the World Series.
Yes, he was a catalyst in getting the Mets to the 2015 post season but was useless after that.

fair point.
Maybe he had a good launch angle and exit velocity? /sarcasm
Wilpons caved to Mets fans & the media (being called cheap) and told Sandy to make it happen.

I don't say this often but the guy just seems like a true quitter. I still think there were probably more net positives with Cespedes than negatives but hard to interpret his actions any other way.
This might be speculation but Rojas seems like a very proactive manager so I wonder if he said something to Cespedes (or the entire team) similar to his honest conversation with Diaz and Cespedes didn't want to face the music. Again.
