Interfering with the recovery of it?
Was thinking the same thing.

You can bet when the next mission is completed there will be significantly better security in the splashdown vicinity.
US Coast Guard should be

Why should the Coast Guard be offering protection for a private entity? They probably aren't breaking any maritime laws.

Private entity working for and in concert with the Federal Government - NASA.

Because the Astronauts that flew it are from NASA

They are totally different. NASA is a civil service workplace. NASA is still a government orginization.
Did someone
MookGiants : 8/2/2020 9:31 pm : link
really question why the coast guard would provide protection for a space shuttle?

You have to be shitting me. Do you even have any clue what the US Coast Guard does?

It would basically
MookGiants : 8/2/2020 9:32 pm : link
be like asking why MetLife stadium has state troopers or cops in the stadium, it's a private entity.
It doesn't matter
MookGiants : 8/2/2020 9:35 pm : link
if it's a government organization on that space shuttle or not.
One of the main duties
MookGiants : 8/2/2020 9:37 pm : link
of the US Coast Guard is Marine Safety.

Protecting a fricking space ship that just landed in the ocean and has potential toxic fumes coming from it absolutely falls under the umbrella of their responsibility. THey have a responsibility to not only protect the space shuttle and Nasa/Space X employees but also protect the people on the boats racing to the site. It could potentially be very dangerous for those people even if they are not there to commit any crimes.

The US Coast Guard's primary duty is protection of our borders, catching drug runners, and ensuring vessel safety within US waters. This happened out in international waters.
It did not happen
MookGiants : 8/2/2020 10:25 pm : link
in international waters. And the coast guard was already involved, they just didnt expect a bunch of boats to race to the scene.

This happened 30 miles off the coast of pensacola. Not in international waters. Wasn't even remotely close to being international waters actually.

When your argument is stupid, lazy, and just plain dumb
montanagiant : 8/2/2020 10:26 pm : link
But you double-down anyways

Ha. I didn't think it could get any more ridiculous than the first post, but the 2nd claiming that this happened in international waters is hilarious.

Those boats that made it to the landing site weren't even remotely close to being in international waters.

Everything beyond 12 nautical miles offshore is international waters.
Isn't international waters like 11 miles out. Been a while since I've
Zeke's Alibi : 8/2/2020 10:34 pm : link
been in Navy, but I believe that's what we were taught.

And to the person that brought up the cops, venues pay for them city to be there.

Have no issue having the Coast Guard or Navy is there as long as they pay for the privilege.

The US Coast Guard arrests people conducting illegal fishing in international waters all the time. The US Coast Guard has the most far reaching "policing" powers of any US agency as told to me by a USCG Captain who commanded one of their high endurance 378 ft cutters.
Remember USCG is now DHS not Treasury Dept since just after 9/11.
