From Giants.com
Four of the released players have regular-season experience - running back Jon Hilliman, linebacker Chris Peace, safety Rashaan Gaulden and cornerback Shakial Taylor, who was awarded to the Giants off waivers on Tuesday. Also waived were four rookie or first-year players, including quarterback Case Cookus of Northern Iowa, fullback George Aston of Pittsburgh, and linebackers Oluwole Betiku, Jr. of Illinois and Dana Levine of Temple.
WR Da'Mari Scott informed the team he will opt out of the 2020 season. Scott is the second Giant to opt out after tackle Nate Solder announced on Wednesday he, too, will not play this year.

Bingo! You caught the main point.
I'm guessing there was no need originally until the veterans passed their tests.
Plus, now got to get the young OLs ready with Nate Solder out.

Leonard Williams' hamstring injury isn't believed to be serious. His place on NFI is insignificant at the moment since the Giants won't begin practicing until Aug. 12 anyway, and not in pads until at least Aug. 17.
Maybe they wanted a quick look at as many guys as possible before they cut.
Cookus could have spent the season on the practice squad in hopes of battling for the backup job in 2021.
I am relieved knowing that we won't be seeing Hilliman carrying the football this season.

I hope someone asks him the thought process behind switching their original decision.

I know what my reasons would be. I have been a proponents of 90. My point is out of all our writers you think one would ask how they came to their decision. It would just be nice to hear relevant questions instead of how Judge is concerned with the public perception of himself due to this unusual season.

Yeah, I was intrigued by Betiku.
With such little practice time, I thought 90 made no sense.
No, the press release says they are doing full-team walk-throughs already.
New York Giants Reduce Roster to 80 Players; Da’Mari Scott Opts Out - ( New Window )
Good point. Though with expanded practice squad, many of the fringe players will likely end up with the team anyway

Yes and also Golden confirmed now to come back. Another definite roster spot taken.
Some of these guys may end up on the practice squad, like maybe the QB, but it is so early in the process that it seems unlikely.

Having injured my hamstring before (twice, many years apart), I don't take it lightly. They take a while before you feel semi-normal and longer to feel like you don't have to think about it when you run.

Agree 100% Matt, a careless, ill-advised comment for Vacchiano to make, especially with thickly muscled hammies, harder to diagnose accurately, longer to heal thoroughly
What was so careless and I’ll advised about what he said? All he said is that it is not believed to be serious. And the roster move is insignificant at this time because they still have a couple of weeks before it may become an issue. Careless? I’ll advised? Wtf?

My point is that there is nothing about hamstrings, especially in a thickly muscled athlete, that is insignificant. Nine days away from Aug. 12 can be nanoseconds in hamstring healing time. You just never know. We've seen this movie before with so many athletes, not Giants alone. Bottom line: to toss this off as insignificant is careless, ill advised, imo. We can agree to disagree.
Again, as I already mentioned he did not call the injury insignificant. I’m not sure why you’re reading it that way. He said the transaction of him being placed on the NFI “AT THE MOMENT” is insignificant because they are not doing any real work physically for a couple of weeks anyway
