it was the Wall Street Journal's story

Yahoo/Negley just regurgitating the interview quotes.

Interview was two weeks ago, before agreement on protocols.

And OBJ has reported to camp and isn't opting out.
Boo OBJ...

It’s about the money? Yeah, no kidding Odell. It’s a business. But the NFL is more than a business in America. And if there’s some way for the games to be played safely, at least reasonably safely, then let’s have a season. This country is in serious trouble and a little bit of the football we all love would be very welcome. I’m watching the NBA and the NHL and it’s a much needed and well deserved respite from the shit show the world has become. I think both of those leagues have found a way to be reasonably safe in these very unsafe times.

But if Odell is so opposed to the owners “exploiting” him and just being about the money then maybe he sould forgo the season and volunteer in a covid ward or give back to the community in some other way. Because as we all know, for OBJ it’s not about the money, it’s about doing good and making the world a better place. smh...

I swear this guy can’t open his mouth without saying something dumb.

If they do end up playing, i'm going to treat this season as one long exhibition schedule in prep for the (hopefully) 2021-22 season.

He would have opted out if he felt that way now. Oh wait, money.
I think there's real doubt that this season will happen,
81_Great_Dane : 8/3/2020 5:04 pm : link
and if it does, it might be much shorter than a normal season — like 8 games.

But I think the NFL is doing the right thing by trying to have a season, because some of these steps require weeks or months of planning, and they kept their options open in case of improvement in the pandemic. That improvement hasn't happened, and they can still pull the plug. But there's so much money at stake, and people want football so much, I think it's worth a try.

Plus, they now have the advantage of seeing MLB's problems and they can learn how to avoid the same.
Don't worry. OBJ can take the year off.

This is what I think will happen. Giants finish season 0-8.

You may disagree with him, but he's certainly not wrong. Being a blowhard diva doesn't mean he's take on it doesn't have merit. I'm sure lots of players share his view on this, he just came out and said it.

His reasons make sense and if a different player without the baggage said it I'm sure it would be met with a different reaction.
Well
afann : 8/3/2020 5:30 pm : link
OBJ can give some of his money to the lower half of the league that does not make what he makes. There are players that want to play because they need to get paid. No games this year no pay. There need to be games in order for the NFL to make money to pay the players

I do have a problem with it, because he can clearly opt out, it's that simple. There is a lot of money involved, but no-one is being forced to do anything, and if he plays, he gets payed a small fortune.

I think he ultimately plays one game, and then shuts himself down. Really glad he's not on the Giants anymore.
opt out if you don't want to play
Torrag : 8/3/2020 5:41 pm : link
it's your right. No one will question it. It's also every other players right that doesn't have $50M banked to earn a living for themselves and their families if they choose to play.

I want them to play, and think they should
PatersonPlank : 8/3/2020 5:42 pm : link
Put in proper protocols, but we have to start moving on. This is not going away until we get a vaccine, so either we shut the country down for 12 months or live with it

The issue I have is him saying that the owners think they “own” the players and treat them like they aren’t human. It’s bit much, no? And it’s constantly getting insinuated or flat out stated by players in the NFL. The owners aren’t forcing anybody to do anything. In this instance they can opt out. In normal times they are free to walk away from football anytime they’d like. Nobody is forcing them to play in the league. But they typically don’t because the players love money just as much as the owners do.

Owners in general are a dirty, greedy bunch. But can we please just stop with the “slave” insinuations every time the league makes a decision the players don’t like? And yes, I know Beckham didn’t come out and use that word, but it’s absolutely what he was getting at and it’s been said by other players before. Just stop. You don’t agree with something the league is doing. Why can’t we just leave it at that?
That’s usually how it goes
UConn4523 : 8/3/2020 6:03 pm : link
they aren’t forced, but they sure are taken advantage of. And the NFL has bad history of ignoring player health and safety for their monetary gain so there’s that as well.
Some on here are just going to criticize anything Odell says or does.
robbieballs2003 : 8/3/2020 6:10 pm : link
One, this was said 2 weeks ago. Funny that it comes out now. Obviously things have changed in 2 weeks.

Two, those criticizing him saying he should opt out is funny. The smart thing to do IS to opt out. Opting out guarantees he keeps his money. Playing this year means he is risking this year's base salary if the season gets canceled. So if you don't like Beckham you should be telling him to play. If he was all about his money he wouldn't be playing this year.
It's OK for
tomjgiant : 8/3/2020 6:54 pm : link
Odell to play for all that money.but it's not ok for the owners to make money. Maybe he just doesn't see them as humans.

ddfan : 8/3/2020 8:10 pm : link
sick of every time players do not like what the league does they accuse the NFL of "owning them They do not see them as people". That is just a demagogue reply throughout the league. I am very sure that people in the NFL do not get treated any different than any other employee in the country. Except they make a lot more money doing it. If my boss told me to do something and I said you dont own me, I am out of a job in 2 minutes. I had to work through covid. We took precautions and very few people contacted the virus. I hope they find a way to stay safe and play the season. However, I am very glad Beckham is not on my team anymore if that is his attitude.

I think that catch vs Dallas with Collinsworth calling it the greatest catch he has ever seen is the worst possible thing that happened to OBJ.

OBJ has been making business decisions on the field for years. He's not a champion. He doesn't do the things consistently through the year that makes the differences to winning.

He's a great athlete, an exciting player to watch, but when he stunk up that Green Bay playoff game, you knew all you ever needed to know about him. 8 drops...8.

Opting out guarantees him his money? I thought if they opt out they get a small fraction of there salary? Either way, his credibility is shot with me, way too many times he's able to bite the hand that feeds him.

Like most others here, if the NFL decides to wait, I support that. Otherwise, I'm not seeing any backlash towards players that want to opt out. He's trying to stir up drama for the sake of drama.

After the big contract NO players are interested in playing anymore. Nobody goes to work after they win the lottery. It's called human nature.

Been saying this for years. People used to say he is so passionate about winning. Huh ? He never cared about anything but money and attention.

He is not here. Thought we won this trade initially and I still do. Addition by subtraction. I do not believe a team with OBJ on it will ever win anything meaningful. Too much I.
I feel really bad for Odell
ShocktoBeck : 8/4/2020 4:41 pm : link
The NFL has been consistently mean to him and NFL owners like Mara are slave owners for the way they treated him all those years.

He’s the biggest b**ch in the NFL and I don’t get how he gets any credibility here after throwing our 2 time Super Bowl winning QB under the bus.

Don’t care what he has to say, do care that so many of you do.

Obviously if players were to be made to give back bonuses on a pro rata basis it would still obviously be for the money and OBJ would sing a tune 180 degrees the other way.
