It would be "naive to describe such an explosion as due to fireworks," Ibrahim told Lebanese TV."
were fireworks, you'd think it would be a lot of small explosions instead of a massive blast like that. The concentration makes it look like a concentrated amount of explosive material exploded. Like a bomb would go off.

Sure picked a good location to store your explosives there general. I mean, what could possibly go wrong.

Life expectancy still higher than the United States, so they're doing something right over there.
Hope everybody's ok?
Not criticizing your sentiment, your heart is in the right place, but I'm almost positive everyone will not be ok, I think the death toll will be extensive from watching the buildings crumble.
but it must have ignited something else, right? I can't imagine a building full of fireworks alone doing that at the 30 second mark.
Yea, no way that last blast was just a bunch of fireworks detonating at the same time. Unless the building it's self was one large firecracker. That was like a MOAB at the end. Damn near had a mushroom cloud going on.
The cause of the explosion remained uncertain as of Tuesday night. Initial reports indicated that the fire occurred in a warehouse storing fireworks and video from the scene appeared to show fireworks igniting shortly before the blast. Additional reports claim that a nearby warehouse was storing explosive chemicals that had been confiscated at the port.
Lebanon's General Security director told Al-Hadath that reports that the explosion was caused by fireworks were "ridiculous" and that the explosion involved high-quality explosives. The Supreme Council of Defense stated that over 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate were stored at the warehouse where the explosion occurred, calling this "unacceptable."
Sources from Hezbollah told OTV Lebanon that there was "no truth" to rumors that the explosion was caused by an Israeli strike on Hezbollah weapons at the port. Hezbollah operatives were seen at the port after the explosion, according to Al-Arabiya. Al-Arabiya claimed that the explosion occurred at a weapons depot belonging to Hezbollah.
The Iranian Mehr News Agency claimed that US sabotage may have had a role in the explosion, based on radar images of US Navy aircraft in the area.
When asked about his depiction of the explosion at a White House briefing, Trump said that he had met with some US generals who feel the blast was not "some kind of a manufacturing explosion type of event." He told reporters that according to these unnamed generals "they seem to think it was an attack. It was a bomb of some kind."
bomb, which was mostly ammonium nitrate, weighed just under two and a half tons. The Beirut explosion was as previously stated 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate.
From what I read.
Having fireworks plant next to the massive amount of AN in storage, and the some guy welding near/at the fireworks plant.
The question is why was all that AN in storage for 6 years?
It was on a ship going from Georgia to Mozambique that had problems, "had to" dock in Beirut, and had its cargo off-loaded. All back in 2013-2014. There is some controversy as to whether it was intentional that this ship "had to" dock in Beirut, but it appears just negligent on the part of the Lebanese port authorities that the AN was still there after all this time.
of such a blast from approximately 2700 tons of ammonium nitrate.
Quote:
Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear and conventional weapons expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California, estimated the yield to be "between 200 and 500 tons, looking at blast damage, the shockwave, seismic signals, and the size of the crater."
...
That much explosive power is at least two orders of magnitude greater than that of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (nicknamed the "Mother of All Bombs"), which has a blast yield of about 11 tons and is the most powerful nonnuclear weapon in the US arsenal.
...
The explosive power would, however, be comparable to the lowest-yield B61 nuclear gravity bomb, which is believed to have an explosive yield of about 300 tons.
Some experts have estimated the explosive yield for what happened in Beirut to be 1 to 2 kilotons, which would make the blast more powerful than some of the smaller US tactical nukes.
I've seen and felt first hand what even a blast fraction of that size can do to a human body, but to watch that video...it's absolutely devastating to think of the lives lost. Explosive yield - ( New Window )
Geez. about 8 to 10% of the yield of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs.
In WW1 there was an ammo ship that blew up in Halifax carry over 5,000 tons of explosives (5 kilotons). It is said it actually blew the water out of the harbor momentarily...
I read the reports that it was being called an attack and figured they'd be looking to blame someone, and primary candidates would be the US or Israel.

Yeah. Fireworks large and small.

Where's Frank Drebin waving off bystanders saying "There is nothing to see here?" lol
Not in that neighborhood
Poor choice.
There have to be casualties close to the blast center.

Found close up and distant videos of smaller explosions...

You can see the shards from the glass wall or the balcony flying. I'd be surprised if he wasn't cut up pretty badly.
Ef me that was a huge explosion.

Wonder how long until Israel is blamed. Not saying they did it or not, but I bet they will be blamed.

You can see that coming a mile away. And you will have a fair amount of people believe it.

More likely Hezbollah or ISIS would be suspect over Israel if it were an attack.

It makes one wonder if this were a test run for somewhere else.

Outside of the deep dregs of Twitter, I’ve found no insinuations Israel was involved.
The NYTs has done great reporting on the negligence and timeline. Reason no. 1 billion papers with bureaus and foreign offices are essential.

It was speculation on my part.
My apologies.
Seems like an accident (for now).
