Well, at least Cano has his annual built-in excuse for under-performing (after he comes back). This trade is working wonders for us. Kinda why you don't trade for 36 year old PED user on the backend of a 10 year mega-contract.
just putting this out there - Gimenez is the best defensive SS we have
Eric on Li : 8/4/2020 8:28 pm : link
as much as this season may suck in a lot of ways I'm glad we are getting to watch his debut. He looks like a very useful player and a really good athlete.
Cordell

Giminez with a great tag

If Rosario is in there, the throw is probably in CF. This kid cuts in front of the runner and slaps the tag on his shoulder

Just terrific baseball instincts

God the selling of this team to anyone, including a group of clowns in a small car, can’t get here fast enough. Cleaning house of Brodie Van Confusedman will be awesome.

Interesting that Baseball Prospectus had him as #72 prospect prior to 2017. Only 24. His K numbers have gotten curiously low, so not very hopeful.

At least Cordell was DFA'ed
Brodie

is in over his head. Humphreys who they dropped could have done the same, with more upside.

Ariel Jurado for his MLB career:

44 games, 26 starts, 177.0 IP, 5.85 ERA, 1.514 WHIP

As a SP in the majors: 134.0 IP, 6.38 ERA
As a RP in the majors: 43.0 IP, 4.19 ERA

Statcast his him below average across the board last season (link below)

Mets have trade a ton of starting pitching prospects.

They DFA'ed him to remove him from the roster, their options were to lose him via waivers or take what they could get, they decided Hamilton was better than nothing.

So basically...

The Mets DFA Jordan Humphreys to make room for Ryan Cordell.

One week later, the Mets DFA Ryan Cordell to make room for Ariel Jurado.

I certainly wish Jurado all the best but you have to question the process here.

I will continue not understanding the Mets 30/40-man roster moves this year.

I would much rather have Jordan Humphreys than Ariel Jurado.
yeah, the Hamilton trade was awful
KDavies : 8/5/2020 3:22 pm : link
Humphreys had a lot of potential, albeit missing a lot of time.

They traded Blake Taylor for Marisnick as well. Taylor has been lights out with the Astros. How much damn pitching are they going to give up for backup CFs?

a GM who is an active trader. In fact I prefer it to someone who is too patient.

But he has lost every significant trade he's made except the JD Davis trade and realistically while today I'd take Davis over anyone in that trade, he's not a good fit on the Mets.

Too much talent in this farm to have a guy with a lot of pressure on him and poor negotiating skills controlling their fates.

He's proven to be a poor trade negotiator, poor at roster management and poor at the allocation of what $ they do spend. If you created a ledger of every move he's made it would be terrifyingly bad and what's worse is he likely feels heat knowing a new owner likely wants his own guy.

that's what I meant with the risk of having a guy under pressure with the "keys" to the farm.

Can you see him trading Francisco Alvarez and Thomas Szapucki for Brandon Workman and free agent to be Jackie Bradley Jr? I can.

I don't see any scenario the Mets deal Jacob DeGrom. If they are bad, he's still an attraction every 5th day. He's a class act, a potential HOFer and quite frankly extremely underpaid. Would it blow my mind to see a new owner come in and deal other high priced players (if possible)? No. But I think DeGrom (with a new owner) is here for "life". That being said, of course if we are 2 seasons from now, the Mets stink and someone offers a bounty at the deadline? Who knows? But I think he's a Met as long as he wants to be here.
I was very pro-Brodie
CMicks3110 : 8/5/2020 4:27 pm : link
but yeah, he has been an awful, awful GM. I do think that there is probably more than we realize going on in his defense, I still think Jeff Wilpon calls the shots and went into win-now mode to drive up the price of the Mets before selling, and of course it backfired .

Was thinking the same thing. It’s scary to think of the obsession with such a non-impactful position in today’s modern game of pitching and offense > then all defense attributes

Agreed. Cespedes leaving is a blessing in disguise. He needs to play full time this year, and next. I would love to see his numbers after a full season of consistent play.

Until Cespedes opted out there really wasn’t a space since Davis and Alonso were ahead of him at LF and 1B. Hopefully now with Cespedes gone he will get more consistent AB’s. When McNeil comes back play Jeff at 2B. The issue will be when Rosario comes back I like how Gimenez plays the game. Do you move Davis back to LF and weaken defense there to give Gimenez everyday at 3B?
I would have made
pjcas18 : 8/5/2020 8:41 pm : link
Alonso a DH and given him some rest, he's been pretty brutal.
it's crazy but just like last Aug injuries hit and the team improves
Eric on Li : 8/5/2020 8:48 pm : link
Dom should definitely be playing every day until otherwise. Whether it's DH, 1B, or LF.

Gimenez obviously starts every game at SS until Rosario is back, beyond that it's either 2b or 3b depending on McNeil.

JDD should probably be the primary DH once McNeil and Rosario come back. But they should also rotate the DH spot with everyone to keep things fresh since there are so few off days.

It's really amazing how much more energy the team plays with overall as they get young guys who can actually play some defense on the field. It's like putting a bunch of slow old guys on the field sucks the energy out of everything.
JDD looks like a real 3B tonight
Eric on Li : 8/5/2020 8:49 pm : link

He can be such a weapon. Porcello was Cy Young Porcello. Dude is so inconsistent.

OF you have Conforto, Nimmo, Smith. IF McNeil, Rosario, Gimenez, Alonso, Davis extra man, players can rest every 9 days with Cano DH. Injuries sort it out
i've gotta be honest im surprised rust isnt a more widely used excuse
Eric on Li : 8/5/2020 9:01 pm : link
right now by fans/media/even coaches. baseball is hot streaks and cold streaks. And adjustments in between. Abruptly stopping ST and team activities for 4 months, especially for pitchers who typically need a lot of time ramping up, is a huge disruption.

The Mets won a game because of their defense on Wednesday night. When is the last time anyone could say that?

In its series-splitting 3-1 win in Washington Wednesday, New York indeed partied like it was 1999, with a defensive showing reminiscent of the so-called “best infield ever.” The excellent glovework behind him allowed Rick Porcello to cruise to his first win as a Met and the 150th of his major-league career.

Quote:
Surely it is something new for the Mets. Defense has not been a strength for this franchise, which you know if you’ve watched them play virtually any game for the last half-decade or more. From 2017 to 2019, New York cost itself 220 runs with its gloves, according to Baseball Info Solutions. No team in baseball has been worse.

According to those Defensive Runs Saved, New York’s defense hasn’t graded out positively since 2016. According to FanGraphs’ Defensive Runs Above Average, the Mets haven’t been above the breakeven mark since 2008.

Quote:
“Three natural outfielders, we had all natural infielders in there behind (Porcello),” Rojas said. “He had the full defense, and that’s why they made the plays.”

Note Rojas’ emphasis on the adjective “natural.” The Mets have talked up their defensive versatility in recent years, but often that’s just a euphemism for playing several people out of position — a predilection that’s had costs.

There's been a lot to dislike in these first couple weeks but so far I very much like what I've seen + heard from Rojas.
For one night, the Mets showcased how powerful a good defense can be - ( New Window )

DFA’d Ildemaro Vargas. He would be an improvement over Guillorme and Dozier if the price is nothing (although I don’t trust BVW to get him for nothing). Has played every position but C in the minors. Last year he finally got 200 AB’s and splits against lefties was strong. Historically has been a low K guy.

Rojas seems direct, honest, and like a pretty smart baseball guy in the sense that none of his decisions seem completely random even if you don't agree with all of them.

I'd guess with a pretty high level of confidence things would have been rockier with Beltran. Hope it matures BVW seeing that the biggest name isn't always the best choice...

Supposedly he's just not a good self starter. Last year the story was that the defensive turnaround in the 2nd half coincided with him being criticized for not putting in enough extra work in the field and once they rode him a little harder he played a lot better.
