Anyone else struggling to get into a possible season?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 8/4/2020 7:37 pm
Or am I alone? I love the NFL. I love the Giants. I love fall Sundays. But I'm finding it hard to get into this 2020 season because I fear a few things: 1) there's a possibility the season just goes off the rails if too many guys get sick, 2) the NFL pushes through, but guys continue to get sick & we end up seeing the backups to the backups...well, we might as well be watching glorified preseason games.

And yes, if there's a season, I'll obviously watch. No doubt about that. But my enthusiasm won't be as high as it would be in a regular year.

And it sucks because, prior to the COVID-19 break, I was really looking forward to this season to see DJ's hopeful improvement & if Judge is the guy to lead us back to the top of the NFC East.

In other news, 2020 totally blows.

It's such an odd offseason
Sneakers O'toole : 8/4/2020 7:56 pm : link
it doesn't feel quite real to me yet.
I firmly believe that the NFL will NOT play all 16 games
JohnB : 8/4/2020 7:56 pm : link
and that it will be shut down before we get to that point. So "yes" I am struggling to get pumped for the season thinking that it will hit a wall and it will end in short order. How do you get excited for that?

I'll watch every Giants game and love every minute of it but I think that there won't be too many minutes involved.

Yes
Payasdaddy : 8/4/2020 7:57 pm : link
Normally I would be looking forward to every training camp report with
I just think its probably gonna crash and burn or be watered down
So what ever i get out of it I would be happy same with college, which I have really gotten into last 10 yrs
At least some good boxing matches should be happening this fall and winter to give me something
Living on west coast last 10 yrs, I do miss the smell of autumn
smells like football!

I'm usually ramping up the excitement this time of year, and I feel like there are a good number of things to be excited about with the current team, but it's tough this year with the season being a 50/50 proposition. Still lacking talent at key positions but I expect a more disciplined, competitive effort.

Professional sports without fans/customers
arniefez : 8/4/2020 8:06 pm : link
is meaningless and just exhibition scrimmages. The NFL even more than the other 3 major sports. If they play it's something to pass the time nothing more.
Take whatever I can get
Mdgiantsfan : 8/4/2020 8:17 pm : link
While it's definitely a unique year, but heck it's not just sports but life in general. Nevertheless, I'll take whatever I can get from the NFL this year. Heck I thought the NBA would be odd, but I've actually enjoyed watching it. The projected fans and faux noise has helped. I've also enjoyed the MLB games I've watched as well. I can't wait til week 1.
I have no confidence whatsoever in a season

When it starts, I'll be watching. But with no preseason games, and limited practices there really isn't going to be much going on.

what is the point of thinking that way? it may not happen, but why think that way? why not think positively? i never understood always leaning negative...if it happens awesome and if it doesnt ok..but i am going to be positive until it doesnt

Its really really hard to stay positive when you have experienced/witnessed the level stupidity we have since March.

Just take a look at this high school photo in Georgia. Tell me all these kids, their extended family and social network will be fine?

And lets have all these high priced, highly talented players sweat, spit, and bleed over each other...no problem we will test on a regular basis.

I just do no understand where peoples heads are these days. This is not a joke...millions have become sick, hundreds of thousands have died.

At some point we need to adapt to this virus and learn to live with it. People think a vaccine is going to come and in the snap of a finger this will all go away. It’ll take time.

So, I’m going to root for football and enjoy whatever we get in the meantime.

I hear you...but its just not smart. You can take all the precautions in the world and still wind up on the wrong end of the stick (see link).

People in america just cannot be inconvenienced anymore. Its pathetic. My son and wife were bitching after a tropical storm knocked out power for a few hours. My god seriously? Same goes for a fucking football season. A year without football? My god give me a break. Does it really impact your life? These players are taking a huge risk. They may not die if they get COVID but are they risking their future potential for an immediate payday?

I don't know the answer, the experts don't know the answers. At the end of the day its a risk. Why take it?

Whats wrong with just saying lets wait a year...lets wait for science to catch up to this atrocity? You making/losing money over football not being played this year? Come on...read a book, find another hobby, etc.

People are taking all of this personally and are failing to see the global/economic/societal implications. Whether its to watch sports again, go to a bar, go to get a hair cut, get a fucking cheeseburger its just really sad and it has been politicized. It is not politics its science.

Read this linked obit. Its the sad truth...and for what? A hasty return to normalcy?

If it is done correctly, the people sweating, spittting and bleeding will be virus free when they do so.

The virus doesn't just infect anyone because they are in close contact - you actually have to have a person carrying it to spread it. That's the point of daily testing.

it won't be easy to keep people virus-free, but it isn't like they will be careless about playing without taking precautions.

And what it has to do with a photo of high school kids in Georgia, I dunno.

How does being positive equate to being selfish??

what you are saying is not what i am saying, i am not going to be mad if football doesnt happen, that was my point, i am excitdd for football and hopeful and if it happens i cant wait...If it doesnt i am not going to sit in a corner and be mad, no i am going to go and keep on living my life..

We could all die tomorrow, it doesnt matter if there is a pandemic or not, i am going to enjoy every minute as much as i can, and like i said you take something away or say i cant do something, ok i find something else..

You tell me i have to wear a mask, i am going to do it and i am going to enjoy it...like i said i work outside all day with a mask ln sweating, i think hey this is a good workout, i dont sulk and get mad...

I just dont understand always thinking negatively...
Also NFL is going to spend all the money they can

Good objective post. Question, what makes yoU think next year at this time it will be any different. A vaccine is only a partial answer, the virus is going nowhere.

I for one can write off this year with an eye to the future. But from what I seen this virus is political as well as science and that s not changing.

There are no guarantees we won’t be in this same place next year at this time because of that
Yup

It sucks. Fans not being at games, if they are played, is going to suck for football. The 12th man will be missing. They play a huge role.

No real practices, sloppy play, cancelled games, etc. Just not excited at all.
Looking forward to it
Lines of Scrimmage : 8/5/2020 7:36 am : link
also will be hopefully seeing college football as well.

I have not watched any of the sports networks so for me it has no sports since March.

I just hope that it is it all about football and that all the protesting stuff stays out of it. We have had more than enough of that.

The games will be weird with no fans but if they can keep the numbers down during the season I expect they will slowly increase the percentage they allow to attend.

a successful vaccine means that there’s now a legitimate way to combat it which is important because it will give everyone the choice to handle it. If you don’t take it, it’s on you. I suspect most/all companies will operate this way.

Things will not be this way in 2021 with a vaccine. At that point science will have done everything they can to protect us and if people won’t take it they can no longer pass blame. A vaccine clears companies of liabilities.
I am looking forward to the season
Essex : 8/5/2020 7:43 am : link
but I have to say that my intensity, which is usually very high for hockey, was just kinda meh for these playoffs., I watched every game and the Rangers were largely awful, which might have had something to do with my intensity, but something did not feel right. Don't know if it was lack of fans, the four month layoff before a tournament began, but it did not feel the same. With all that said, I would rather sports than no sports as long as each player has the option of opting out.
I look at the Giants as a struggling team. Along with
Marty in Albany : 8/5/2020 7:53 am : link
the rest of the League, they now have to struggle against Covid 19.

Even before the onset of Covid 19, I didn't expect stellar play from the Giants in 2021. However, I did want to see them make significant changes in their system, win some battles, and improve.

I would like to see the Giants struggle against Covid 19 and overcome it. That struggle, might even help to build them as team, or it could tear them apart.

Obviously, I will be disappointed if there is no season, but if there is, my expectations have not changed at all.

Good point. However, as with any new vaccine people will have legitimate reason to be cautious.

Also vaccines as a rule are 50% effective. If that holds true people will still be getting sick from this virus, as they do now with the flu. Are you suggesting going forward we will treat Covid the same as the flu.

I hope you are correct. I ve felt all along how one reacts to this virus is a personal choice. But as with all personal choices my rights end where yours begin. We cannot make personal choices that infringe on how others what to treat the virus.

(My first post should be I ve seen, not I seen, that was phone typo. Being grammar police for own post 😄
Vaccine
Lines of Scrimmage : 8/5/2020 8:03 am : link
I believe the FDA is going to require 50% success rate with the vaccine. Fauci said he is hoping for 60%. The vaccine is not going to make this go away. This is why I do not understand the people who want things shut down.

I am barely paying attention to anything football related

I am enjoying the NBA and MLB (for as long as it lasts) and if there happens to be any semblance of an NFL season I will consider it a bonus.

But I will be surprised if it happens and I don't expect it to be very good, if it does.
I don’t think the vaccine makes it vanish
UConn4523 : 8/5/2020 8:17 am : link
I’m strictly talking liability. Business will go back to 100% after a vaccine IMO. The new norm will be to get the vaccine or you are on your own.

We also don’t really know much about what the vaccine can do and I wouldn’t compare success rates to the flu vaccine, this virus is much different so it might be more effective than people think.

This is sadly very true. Inconvenience has somehow become synonymous with having your freedom and liberties taken away. Too many people conflate being a selfish, lazy asshole with being a patriot because it makes them feel better.

I'm disappointed a great number of people obviously fail to grasp the reality of the situation we all live in, and are not doing their share to keep us all as safe as possible.

Working from home has led to an immense, intense amount of work on my plate. Routinely working 12+ hour days, and nights on projects in Asia that are sucking.

I hope football will be safe for the players and all involved, and provide an escape I sorely need.
