this week on my podcast, going to have a couple of Jet folks on to discuss Darnold as Jet fans are the only ones that think he is a good NFL QB and future pro bowler.
Of course the power outages in the area might push it till next week, but I think it will be a good listen.
Daniel Jones vs Sam Darnold will def be a major topic.
WOW'd me in his first few years. He's also still good to mechanically breakdown and make absolute bonehead decisions.
And of course he hasn't had the best support casting, especially Oline which i believe this season is a complete turnover?
If this season is somewhat normal and Darnold doesn't impress, I can see the jets moving on and using a top pick on a QB. I wouldn't stick a fork in Darnold quite yet, but its clear he needs to refine his game.
His stats aren't that bad, and he was above .500 as a starter last year. He is very inconsistent but I think the Jets supporting cast leaves little to be desired.
The line is bad
LeVeon Bell kinda sucked last year (could be because of the line, but he's also getting up there in age)
Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa and Jamison Crowder were probably all #3 or 4 receivers at best. That had to be the worst WR trio in the league. And they didn't do much to improve it, Denzel Mims and Breshard Perriman?
Chris Herndon missed a ton of time
He isn't really working with much. No #1 (or even #2) WR and a bad line.
is that they likely go into year 4 of Darnold without knowing if he’s truly the answer. That’s typically the year you extend your QB which I don’t see how they can do given what they’ve seen from to date.
Lame duck HC his first year, giving way to a new offensive system entering his second year. Which of course goes on to get severely altered by him catching mono. Now Year 3, we've got Covid hampering off season work, and Gase is seemingly on the hot seat. All the while he's never had good skill position or offensive line talent to work with.
Just a nightmare scenario in terms of bringing a young QB into the league. He has a penchant for making off-script plays, the natural ability is definitely impressive at times.
I don't think you can say definitively either way on him at this time, and who knows it may still be an open question until the end of year 4 - at which point they've basically blown that cheap rookie contract window.
RE: Wouldnt it be fun .... IF THE SEASON CONTINUES mind you
and I mean that as a compliment. He probably won't measure up to the top QBs in the league, but will put up good numbers, be a little turnover prone and look incredible during some stretches. Who knows if he'll have the big game chops Eli had (assuming the Jets ever play in any), but I wanted the Giants to draft Darnold for those reasons. Obviously I like what I saw from Jones though.
Younger than Joe Burrow. I'm not rooting for the kid to fail.
He had only one season at USC, and went to a team with a worse OL than the Giants.
He needs to develop pro mechanics, and THEN use his athleticism and arm strength. It will take time. But there's a lot of Brett Favre in his skillset and game.
Knowing the Jets, they'll pull the plug on him, and the lightbulb will go for Darnold at his next stop.
With that said I believe that the Jets will ruin him. The previous GM and the current GM have done a very poor job building the offensive line and adding weapons despite what fanofthejets likes to claim.
Their starting guards are Alex Lewis and Greg Van Roten. While both are decent players they are better suited as backups. Kelvin Beachum is a capable starting LT that the Jets let walk. He signed a cheap 1 year deal with the Cardinals. The Jets signed swing tackle Fant and gave him a ridiculous 3 year $30 million dollar contract to start at RT.
Raw LT Mekhi Becton is starting at LT without the luxury of a regular offseason to prepare. The Jets would have been wise to bring back Beachum and let him start the season until Becton was ready. Their OL depth is arguably the worst in football.
The Jets did sign C Connor McGovern which was a solid move IMO. It was a much wiser decision than last year's plan to bring the rapidly declining Ryan Kalil out of retirement. That was another move Fanofthejets raved about at the time only to prove to be a big mistake.
Jets really haven't done what you need to do to take
care of your franchise QB. From OL to skill positions, they haven't given him multiple weapons to excel. They started this year w/OL & WR 1 & 2. And,even when they brought in a weapon like Bell,Gase didn't use him. That being said,w/both Mosley & Adams gone from that D,the Jets could wind up in the Trevor Lawrence QB Lottery. That would make for a very interesting off season for them, depending on Darnold's play this season!
as Darnold talked about seeing ghosts out there, any comparison to Eli likely was gone too.
He's the guy he was in college. A turnover-prone QB who has questionable decision making. It is really hard to get guys like that to be different.
Absolutely agree. Throw in his horrible mechanics too. When pressured up the middle he just ducks and chucks off his back foot like....wait for it....Mark Sanchez v2.0
I like young QB's to have a good OL and at least average running game. He has had neither. He also had very little college playing time in college so he is still very raw. If he does not show better this year though then the bust factor will certainly be in the media more.

Still too early to tell but Jets' fans will be a good barometer.
I feel like it takes several seasons for a QB to more or less be "what he is" in the national viewpoint. Until then, usually only the team's fans know the intimate details for success/failure.

I agree with Fatman and averagejoe... I'll throw in that I never thought that Darnold could handle the big moments -- he looks and acts like he gets swallowed up by big moments -- that may be youth -- and it may be lack of poise due to his lack of technique, but I was glad the Giants passed on him. I never saw him as having the right stuff to be the franchise QB of the NY Giants.
Eli had crap around him and still had ole miss competing in a very tough conference. After 8-10 starts in the nfl Eli was a pro caliber winning qb. Darnold ain’t that. Yet. We’ll see. He’s in a messy Jets situation, as usual, because jets.
I think he can play, but he does seem to be the same QB as he was in college - risk taking & error prone - only at USC he had more talent than most, not with the Jets
Saying that, he was 6-2 in his last 8 starts last year

If that happens jets have a good chance at trevor lawrence.... Would that be fun?

I'm not convinced, though. You'd still want a bit more out of your #2 pick. I think him and Jones both have brutal supporting casts.

But I will say that ever since that 2017 Rose Bowl game, I was a fan. I think hes got some magic in him.
