NFT: Ten Examples of the Mandela Effect

DanMetroMan : 8/5/2020 11:03 am
1. The Monopoly Man’s Monocle

For decades, Rich Uncle Pennybags (or Mr. Monopoly) has been the de facto mascot for Monopoly, the Parker Brothers (now Hasbro) game that somehow made real estate exciting. Some insist Pennybags completes his top hat and business attire ensemble with a monocle, but that’s not true. He’s never worn one. People appear to be conflating his depiction with that of Mr. Peanut, the Planters mascot who sports a single corrective lens. That’s because our brain can easily take subjects with similar traits and blend them together. “In studies, when you show participants word pairs and ask them to remember ‘blackmail’ and ‘jailbird,’ half of them will later say they remember learning the word blackbird,” Brewer says.
2. Jiffy Peanut Butter

If you looked forward to your school lunch break because your parent or guardian packed a Jiffy peanut butter sandwich, your childhood may be a lie. While both Jif and Skippy brands have lined store shelves, there’s never been a “Jiffy” brand. “They may have had a false memory by incorporating elements in the reconstruction process of Jif and Skippy,” Brewer says. “Now that’s encoded in their memory, and the false memory is what they’re remembering. They don’t remember the experience of seeing it but the experience of falsely remembering.”

I had my own personal example over the weekend - when a quick Google search revealed Cat Stevens in fact never covered Harry Chapin's "Cat's In the Cradle" -- and in point of fact I actually don't hate his version.
i explained this to my wife as well

as soon as you see the monopoly man you should instantly remember he never had a monocle. Same with Jif and Skippy... It has always been Jif, but we used to called it Jiffy because of Skippy. It is funny how it has become a thing now.
Blake Crouch's *Recursion* heavily incorporates this into it's plot...

...freaking GREAT read. Best 'fun summer' read of mine, so far.
BBI is the home of the Mandela Effect

A search in the Corner Forum archives for "Hicks" will confirm this.
There must be some other great ones, but Hicks is the one that jumps out as a textbook example. What others am I missing?

Aside from the obvious that is Cat in the song title and Stevens' (former) name, he also wrote a song with a very similar theme called Father and Son.

Not sure if that’s an example of this. Possibly just grew out of the H being above the N on a keyboard.
This is a bunch of psycho-babble...

Loved that novel. He also wrote the wayward pines novels which are great as well (mediocre TV miniseries aside).
Hakeem Nicks

and Hixon were on the team together. I think they started opposite each other for a number of years, until Vic came along after Hixon's injury. so you had Hicks and Cruz.

Sounds like some fiction I could get into and I'm always looking for a new read.
Can you give a quick synopsis of "Recursion"?

(yeah, I know I can Google it but I prefer a reader's opinion and not some sales pitch from Amazon)

Nate Solder is often confused with a left tackle.

Never convince me that Sinbad didnt play a genie both me and my two brothers and my dad remembers him playing it. That is the problem with the nendela effect if our time line is altered one way or another there will never be any proof that it happen just possibly a feeling of something is off.
We've had multiple discussions about the Mandela Effect
Route 9 : 8/5/2020 2:13 pm : link
on the site. We went over how people truly believe that there are 52 states.

I think, for example, a ton of people are making mistakes in drawings and spreading them like wildfire. So people are gettinf confused.

Like Pikachu's tail having black detailing. I know I've seen artists who draw his tail with it... When his tail was always a solid, full yellow.

Or they're just thinking Monopoly Man had a monocle but thinking of Mr. Peanut.
Getting confused *

If you're not actually paying attention, your brain just assumes it's "stein" because whose name ends in "stain"? That's the only one of these things I've ever read that actually surprised me. I always thought it was Berenstein.

I honestly think it's better to go into the book blind. No spoilers. I would just say that it screws with your head in the same way his Wayward Pines books did, and the way the movie 'Inception' did.
Thanks x m

Sold. I loved Wayward Pines.
Re Jiffy

people often overlook the existence of Jiffy Pop Popcorn. So there's Jiff, Skippy and Jiffy Pop. Some confusion was probably inevitable.

Sincerely,

Dylan McDermott and Dermott Mulroney.

I go look up Giants highlights from time to time

and I have NO memory of the Giants playing the Bears on the road last year. None. I went to watch it and thought I was going to be watching the 2018 game where they beat Chicago at home.

The 2019? 😕 confused. I remember nothing from that game. Not one highlight. Nada.
There's a movie on Prime
TXRabbit : 8/6/2020 6:38 pm : link
called "The Mandela Effect" that's not too bad. Kind of trippy sci-fi but nonetheless enjoyable
