You've got it backwards - they're in Philly. Game 1 is yankees at home, in CBP. Game 2 is a normal Phillies home game (to the extent anything in 2020 is normal).
according to MLB.com
Jints in Carolina : 8/5/2020 2:36 pm : link
Yanks are the home team in game 1 and the road team in game 2.
oh wait
Jints in Carolina : 8/5/2020 2:37 pm : link
they're not even at yankee stadium today?

LMAO!
Two years ago today.....
Greg from LI : 8/5/2020 2:51 pm : link
...the Yankees made a minor transaction, sending cash considerations to Toronto in exchange for a minor league infielder. The Blue Jays had themselves acquired him for cash just three months earlier.

Two years later, Gio Urshela has hit .314/.358/.542 with 24 homers in 141 games as Yankee.

This time pulls an 0-2 pitch to right after trying to go to RF on the first two pitches. I think he faked Wheeler out a bit there and jumped all over the HR pitch.

Yanks up 3-0 and Ho hum DJ just got another hit. Two already today.

This inning after Gardy puts them up 3-0, mhe walks the lead off guy on 4 pitches and gives up a bomb to Harper and gives it right back.

I can take the Harper HR but the lead off 4 pitch walk, not so much.

That's what they keep saying on YES but it looked more like the guy tripped over Fords ankle after kicking him there.

No way did Ford have his foot in the middle of the bag like they said. It was on the furthest from home field side corner of the bag. Looked more like a misstep on the runner to me trying hard to beat the throw as he hit pretty far up the bag as opposed to the part closest to home.

Right there with ya on the tandem. In a normal season I think Voit would get the majority of playing time but with so many games so close together now, I think that'll work in Ford's favor.

I really like his bat and having it come off the bench late if needed too. He's an excellent pinch hitter.

As for the eyes, I did have to rewind the DVR a couple of times to be sure.

Yeah Arc, I agree with you there. The box looks a lot worse than what actually happens and his fielders didn't give him much help either in that inning.

I put this game on Happ and thought Nelson even with his bad line, pitched better than the veteran Happ. Staked to a three run lead and coughs it up in a blink. Six walks over three? WTF?

I was really hoping something like the 2018 Happ would re-emerge without the rocketball from last year. Even if that was ambitious, I was willing to settle for his career norms.

He's just been pure trash. Can't keep sending him out every 5th day if he's going to get tattooed like this.

Not only the strike three bad call but the strike two check swing call as well. It was close and maybe Ford did go, but I hate when HP ump's make the call instead of checking with the baseline ump.

Hernandez is one of those guys who makes those calls himself a lot of times. Paulie has said it many times, there's no way you can be looking at the pitch in order to see if it's a ball or strike and at the same time be able to see if a guy checked his swing or not. A full swing sure that's easy but not a clean check swing.

Happ needs to be on a short leash this season coming off the year he had last year. Somebody said that Paxton should only get one or two more starts if he doesn't improve, no that should be Happ. Paxton had a strong finish last season I recall. Michael King can do what Happ is doing out there, maybe better. He blew his wad, at the trade deadline from Toronto, a couple years ago.

hit me by total surprise. After that Judge home run I was totally feeling like we could come back in the game. Maybe they talked about it more but I had the game on mute and it just ended, so anti climactic.

Honestly the walks with Happ are the maddening part. Like I get it, maybe you are less confident in your stuff but you can't be a veteran pitcher and walk batters like that. No reason to not put Clarke Schmidt out there if that's what he's giving you.

Chad Green looks like he's leveled up. 2020 Greenie looks even better than the one we saw after his hiccup that required being sent down last year.

His slider has improved considerably. Green already had one of the best fastballs of any reliever in baseball - but having this new weapon to go to may make him an elite bullpen option.

Kudos to Matt Blake. There's way more drop on the slider now. Green didn't have the same depth on that pitch in past seasons.

Some of them yes but to be fair he's got great movement on his pitches tonight, and late movement at that. Some of those pitches looked hittable to the last second then just dropped off the table.

Coney's mentioned his high spin rate a few times tonight, and his analysis has been really good.

How about taking the pitch? He throws it virtually every 2 strike count. You cannot hit it, so look at it. The result is the same if it happens to be a FB and not the curve. I cannot remember a 2 strike FB tonight from him.

Easier said than done when it looks like it's going to be a strike for so long.

I'll give you a couple of guys like Gary who looks like he has no clue and is swinging at everything but sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the other guy.

Nola was on his A+ game tonight. Not only were his pitches fantastic but for the most part kept the Yanks off balance as well. Hell, they only had two hard hit balls all night off him out of what 90 pitches?

No doubt. Gotta love a guy that plays his way into more playing time when given a chance, and he looks like he doesn't want to give it back.

Fantastic pickup for the Yanks, no question about it.
Beautiful.

Goddamn, all this team needs is decent starting pitching. Not great, just decent, and that's what's so very aggravating about Happ. This team scores runs in bushels - just don't give up a 5+ a start and these guys will win at a .750 clip.

I think we're going to need to recall Schmidt sooner than later to stabilize the rotation. He looks closer to ready than Garcia does and I think he's a significantly better prospect than Mike King with a much higher ceiling.

I do think Monty is the real deal, so that's another rotation spot and I am comfortable with Tanaka taking the ball every 5th day.

Whatever is going on with Paxton, it has to be figured out ASAP. We can't have him put us behind the ball in the first inning every time he pitches. Obviously there's a mechanical issue there or he's not fully recovered. Whatever it is, they have to figure it out and address it quickly. We obviously don't have a lot of time here.

Morgan got a very generous call for strike 2. Would have been 3-1, and with the bases juiced the at-bat would have gone differently.

I feel bad for Miggy - he's going to need regular AB's to get back to where he was in 2018; but the way this team is structured, there's just not a place to get them for him.

Gio clearly deserves to play 3B every day. We have a pretty beastly platoon @ 1B, so really the only place for Miggy to play is LF, where he's competing with Gardner and Tauchman for PT. I'd say Andujar would be likely to get most games against lefties, but he's a reverse split guy and actually fares better against righties - which is the only hand you can put Gardner out there against.

Tauchman is a reverse guy too, though - he smashes lefties.

So, I guess the best you can really do with Andujar is get him in LF against RHP a couple times a week.

There just aren't enough AB's to go around.

Not a bad problem to have, but it's gotta be tough to go from a year where you really should have won RoY, to getting hurt and coming back to find you really have no actual spot to play anymore.

That's baseball, Suzyn.

We are the approximate equivalent of 23-5 to start the year if you were to extrapolate a 9-2 start into the equivalent of a 162 game season.

I like it.

Yup, seems like an even bigger win when you get the W after facing a top pitcher dealing like Nola was.

Right there with you on Happ. It would be one thing if he was giving them innings while giving up all those runs but he's screwing the pooch all around. He's been about as bad as a guy could be so far.

I think they'll give him 1-2 more starts at best to get better. If not, it's one of the young guns because they certainly can't give Happ as much leash as they might've in a 162 game year.

I a huge Gardy fan
section125 : 8/5/2020 10:18 pm : link
and I'm starting to think Tauchman should be the starter in LF and Gardy goes in as sub when Judge and Hicks have a game off(Tauchman to RF, Gardy to LF/CF)

Andujar needs more ABs to get going.

Happ will not earn his 3rd year. They will put him in BP eventually and King, Nelson or Schmidt will take over(outside chance on Loaisiga).

Anyone else find that they kind of like the 7 inning DH games?

I was super against it at first. I hated the idea. But, after seeing it in practice, it actually doesn't bother me and I think I actually like it.

Still not sure I'd do this in a regular year - but for the purpose of 2020, I actually think it was smart to do.
I agree
Greg from LI : 8/5/2020 10:21 pm : link
Gardner is best used as the 4th OF at this point. Tauchman is simply too good to sit.

Yeah that's how I feel too. Plus their bats just keep coming at teams and one more time through that lineup is really tough for most teams to deal with.

The Yanks pen has been locking down games while thier O has already won a few games late. 7 innings definitely takes away a huge strength of this team.

we're 9-2 and +15,
Del Shofner : 8/5/2020 10:34 pm : link
Twins are 10-2 and +30.

Were the Twins supposed to be real good this year? With the pandemic, can't say I was focusing on anyone's predictions.
.
arcarsenal : 8/5/2020 10:34 pm : link
It does. I guess for the Yankees specifically, it's not advantageous–a team like the Phillies actually benefit more since they gave decent SP but an awful BP.

But, from more of a general fan standpoint, it's a lot easier to sit through a pair of 7-inning games than it is to spend 6-7 hours in front of the tube. The traditional DH's can turn into all-day affairs.

And it does help keep some pitchers fresh.

I thought I'd hate it.

MIN has a really, really nasty lineup and their bullpen is legit now. Rich Hill never stays healthy, so their rotation is probably going to have some small question marks. Dobnak has actually pitched well thus far. I just don't see Berrios as an "ace" - I see him as a really good #2 or a *great* 3 on a WS team.

Minnesota is legit, though. I know the Yanks have owned them for a while now, but we're probably going to need to get past them again this year to get to the WS.

I am more worried about MIN than HOU this year.

Agreed. There are a lot of things Gardy can do to help the team at this point but they can be done as a 4th OF. Tauch really is just a better all around player at this point.

That and the take ABs away from them. The Yanks often win late. I thought this would be a disadvantage for the Yanks because of their BP strength and bats beating up other teams' pens.
Please no more Happ
Rick in Dallas : 8/6/2020 9:20 am : link
He is just plain awful. I turn the game off after watching him pitch an inning. I would rather see Green or King give them 4 or 5 innings. How far off is Garcia?
Schmidt will get the call before Garcia

He's two years older and much more polished. Garcia has great stuff but hasn't looked ready for prime time yet.

Schmidt get his chance. Even if Happ pitches ok in his next outing, I could never trust him in a meaningful game. Perhaps Happ has a future in long relief (with another team ;)

Makes sense since they had to get down to 28 players today. Considering the quality of the roster, I can see how these guys were the odd men out.

It would've been interesting to see what they would've done if Miggy had a big day yesterday. They obviously gave him a chance to make his case to stay but he's definitely struggling at the plate and he needs work to get that going.
can't see Miggy with that long swing excelling in limited ab's
Stu11 : 8/6/2020 10:55 am : link
frankly there is just no use for him on this roster right now. He can't get ab's or time in the field over Tauchman right now, he just can't. Also he's not needed at 3rd with DJ and Wade on the roster. Honestly with the orginizational pitching depth I think the biggest priority right now is to lock up DJ not Tanaka or Pax. That guy is so godamn valuable with his bat and glove and ability to play most of the inf and play every position well.
.
arcarsenal : 8/6/2020 11:00 am : link
It's the right move for Miggy to be optioned. The AB's just aren't here for him right now. I feel really bad for him, but it's just a numbers game and right now, they don't favor him.

With Gardner almost certainly being in his final year here, I would be careful about trading Andujar and Frazier - we will need at least one of them. Especially when you factor in the injury concerns with Judge, Hicks and even Stanton. So far, so good on all 3.

But, I would definitely dangle one of the two for pitching.

I think Mike Tauchman is a *legit* everyday MLB player. He should be part of this team for a while. He's still 29.
