If he can give us a solid 3 innings, that would be great.
yeah no shit....he and Paxton are garbage right now.
LMAO!
Two years later, Gio Urshela has hit .314/.358/.542 with 24 homers in 141 games as Yankee.
Yanks up 3-0 and Ho hum DJ just got another hit. Two already today.
This inning after Gardy puts them up 3-0, mhe walks the lead off guy on 4 pitches and gives up a bomb to Harper and gives it right back.
I can take the Harper HR but the lead off 4 pitch walk, not so much.
Now the tying run on four pitches!
Already walked six and there's only 1 out in the third.
That's what they keep saying on YES but it looked more like the guy tripped over Fords ankle after kicking him there.
No way did Ford have his foot in the middle of the bag like they said. It was on the furthest from home field side corner of the bag. Looked more like a misstep on the runner to me trying hard to beat the throw as he hit pretty far up the bag as opposed to the part closest to home.

You've got better eyes than me. That's good to hear. Glad he should be ok. I like the Ford/Voit tandem.

Right there with ya on the tandem. In a normal season I think Voit would get the majority of playing time but with so many games so close together now, I think that'll work in Ford's favor.
I really like his bat and having it come off the bench late if needed too. He's an excellent pinch hitter.
As for the eyes, I did have to rewind the DVR a couple of times to be sure.
Yeah Arc, I agree with you there. The box looks a lot worse than what actually happens and his fielders didn't give him much help either in that inning.
I put this game on Happ and thought Nelson even with his bad line, pitched better than the veteran Happ. Staked to a three run lead and coughs it up in a blink. Six walks over three? WTF?
Quote:
I should be fair to Nelson - that entire inning was basically FC's, infield hits and bloops. The box will make it look like he was a lot worse than he really was.

I was really hoping something like the 2018 Happ would re-emerge without the rocketball from last year. Even if that was ambitious, I was willing to settle for his career norms.
He's just been pure trash. Can't keep sending him out every 5th day if he's going to get tattooed like this.
Gotta love the fight in this team. Even down big they just battle and don't give away at bats.
Angel fucking Hernandez folks. How this guy still has a job is beyond me. Now he's even a crew chief.
Ford should be on. Should be loaded with 1 out. Bad call.
He also didn't miss a 3 run HR by much.
Neris in for the Phillies now.
Just one of the many reasons he's thought of as the worst ump in the game, and disliked so much by players and managers. Terrible at his job, inconsistent, rabbit ears, and thinks he's actually part of the game.
ain't making Yankees fans Happy.
Double-digit ERA 10.29.
Dare I say Hapless.

He'll probably say it's all just happenstance

Not only the strike three bad call but the strike two check swing call as well. It was close and maybe Ford did go, but I hate when HP ump's make the call instead of checking with the baseline ump.
Hernandez is one of those guys who makes those calls himself a lot of times. Paulie has said it many times, there's no way you can be looking at the pitch in order to see if it's a ball or strike and at the same time be able to see if a guy checked his swing or not. A full swing sure that's easy but not a clean check swing.
well he's been handed 3 and 5-0 leads and coughed it up and giving them no length at all. I'm completely done with him. I think this crazy exhibition type season lends itself perfectly to giving the kids a shot.

Yup. Infuriating. Feels like Hernandez has been around forever and has been terrible for just as long.

Happ needs to be on a short leash this season coming off the year he had last year. Somebody said that Paxton should only get one or two more starts if he doesn't improve, no that should be Happ. Paxton had a strong finish last season I recall. Michael King can do what Happ is doing out there, maybe better. He blew his wad, at the trade deadline from Toronto, a couple years ago.
I don't think he is on the 40 man roster.
They would have to make a move, I believe.

Getting Schmidt on the 40 man would be no problem. There is a lot of replaceable parts in the BP
Honestly the walks with Happ are the maddening part. Like I get it, maybe you are less confident in your stuff but you can't be a veteran pitcher and walk batters like that. No reason to not put Clarke Schmidt out there if that's what he's giving you.
Coney says he has three pitches
Is knockin' 'em down.
Is knockin' 'em down.
That curve is nasty
Glad that ball was the height it was. I like Didi too much to imaging what would have happened if it was head high...

Not too bad. But what's his movement pitch?

Slider change guy.
Slider looked good today
Why? He was just getting going.
Why? He was just getting going.
Pitch count probably? 8 games in 9 days or something like that.
His slider has improved considerably. Green already had one of the best fastballs of any reliever in baseball - but having this new weapon to go to may make him an elite bullpen option.
Kudos to Matt Blake. There's way more drop on the slider now. Green didn't have the same depth on that pitch in past seasons.
Pitiful ABs this game. Nola is good, but how many batters are gonna K on that same ball in the dirt?

Some of them yes but to be fair he's got great movement on his pitches tonight, and late movement at that. Some of those pitches looked hittable to the last second then just dropped off the table.
Coney's mentioned his high spin rate a few times tonight, and his analysis has been really good.

How about taking the pitch? He throws it virtually every 2 strike count. You cannot hit it, so look at it. The result is the same if it happens to be a FB and not the curve. I cannot remember a 2 strike FB tonight from him.

Chad Green This Season:
24 batters faced
1 Hit
1 BB (intentional)
11 K

Very bad.

Easier said than done when it looks like it's going to be a strike for so long.
I'll give you a couple of guys like Gary who looks like he has no clue and is swinging at everything but sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the other guy.
Nola was on his A+ game tonight. Not only were his pitches fantastic but for the most part kept the Yanks off balance as well. Hell, they only had two hard hit balls all night off him out of what 90 pitches?
This man is legit. He could start on a lot of teams. He's not depth.
It feels like every single game one of our hitters gets pegged.
Very aggravating.
In Cash we trust
Dammit, pull him and ice it before it swells....
Tommy Hunter was unable to record a single out. Phillies going back to the pen.
Let's bust this open.
No doubt. Gotta love a guy that plays his way into more playing time when given a chance, and he looks like he doesn't want to give it back.
Fantastic pickup for the Yanks, no question about it.
This is the worst job by a HP umpire I have seen in a while
DJ got fucked over
I think we're going to need to recall Schmidt sooner than later to stabilize the rotation. He looks closer to ready than Garcia does and I think he's a significantly better prospect than Mike King with a much higher ceiling.
I do think Monty is the real deal, so that's another rotation spot and I am comfortable with Tanaka taking the ball every 5th day.
Whatever is going on with Paxton, it has to be figured out ASAP. We can't have him put us behind the ball in the first inning every time he pitches. Obviously there's a mechanical issue there or he's not fully recovered. Whatever it is, they have to figure it out and address it quickly. We obviously don't have a lot of time here.
Can't hit anymore. But Andujar 0 for 6 wasn't an improvement.

Enrico Pallazzo called a better game than this. Where the hell was that pitch?

Missed the first game?
It's hard to say which one was worse but they're both up there for worst this year.
Fuck Happ and the umps

Yes, both jobs were awful, but last night was excruciatingly poor.

I feel bad for Miggy - he's going to need regular AB's to get back to where he was in 2018; but the way this team is structured, there's just not a place to get them for him.
Gio clearly deserves to play 3B every day. We have a pretty beastly platoon @ 1B, so really the only place for Miggy to play is LF, where he's competing with Gardner and Tauchman for PT. I'd say Andujar would be likely to get most games against lefties, but he's a reverse split guy and actually fares better against righties - which is the only hand you can put Gardner out there against.
Tauchman is a reverse guy too, though - he smashes lefties.
So, I guess the best you can really do with Andujar is get him in LF against RHP a couple times a week.
There just aren't enough AB's to go around.
Not a bad problem to have, but it's gotta be tough to go from a year where you really should have won RoY, to getting hurt and coming back to find you really have no actual spot to play anymore.
That's baseball, Suzyn.
Fuck Happ and the umps
about sums up the day...
I like it.
Fuck Happ and the umps
Yup, seems like an even bigger win when you get the W after facing a top pitcher dealing like Nola was.
Right there with you on Happ. It would be one thing if he was giving them innings while giving up all those runs but he's screwing the pooch all around. He's been about as bad as a guy could be so far.
I think they'll give him 1-2 more starts at best to get better. If not, it's one of the young guns because they certainly can't give Happ as much leash as they might've in a 162 game year.
Andujar needs more ABs to get going.
Happ will not earn his 3rd year. They will put him in BP eventually and King, Nelson or Schmidt will take over(outside chance on Loaisiga).
I was super against it at first. I hated the idea. But, after seeing it in practice, it actually doesn't bother me and I think I actually like it.
Still not sure I'd do this in a regular year - but for the purpose of 2020, I actually think it was smart to do.
Yeah that's how I feel too. Plus their bats just keep coming at teams and one more time through that lineup is really tough for most teams to deal with.
The Yanks pen has been locking down games while thier O has already won a few games late. 7 innings definitely takes away a huge strength of this team.
Were the Twins supposed to be real good this year? With the pandemic, can't say I was focusing on anyone's predictions.
But, from more of a general fan standpoint, it's a lot easier to sit through a pair of 7-inning games than it is to spend 6-7 hours in front of the tube. The traditional DH's can turn into all-day affairs.
And it does help keep some pitchers fresh.
I thought I'd hate it.
Were the Twins supposed to be real good this year? With the pandemic, can't say I was focusing on anyone's predictions.
MIN has a really, really nasty lineup and their bullpen is legit now. Rich Hill never stays healthy, so their rotation is probably going to have some small question marks. Dobnak has actually pitched well thus far. I just don't see Berrios as an "ace" - I see him as a really good #2 or a *great* 3 on a WS team.
Minnesota is legit, though. I know the Yanks have owned them for a while now, but we're probably going to need to get past them again this year to get to the WS.
I am more worried about MIN than HOU this year.
Agreed. There are a lot of things Gardy can do to help the team at this point but they can be done as a 4th OF. Tauch really is just a better all around player at this point.
That and the take ABs away from them. The Yanks often win late. I thought this would be a disadvantage for the Yanks because of their BP strength and bats beating up other teams' pens.
Makes sense since they had to get down to 28 players today. Considering the quality of the roster, I can see how these guys were the odd men out.
It would've been interesting to see what they would've done if Miggy had a big day yesterday. They obviously gave him a chance to make his case to stay but he's definitely struggling at the plate and he needs work to get that going.
With Gardner almost certainly being in his final year here, I would be careful about trading Andujar and Frazier - we will need at least one of them. Especially when you factor in the injury concerns with Judge, Hicks and even Stanton. So far, so good on all 3.
But, I would definitely dangle one of the two for pitching.
I think Mike Tauchman is a *legit* everyday MLB player. He should be part of this team for a while. He's still 29.
