An early film where he and Nicole Kidman leave Ireland and team up as a couple to homestead in the american West. A really good film among the many excellent movies he made.
Must be doing something right he’s taken home quite a bit of money from many. I’m a fan A few Good Men, Top Gun are always worth another watch he’s must be very good at what he does the world says so what can a small few matter.
believe anyone thought putting Tom Cruise in Valkyrie was a good idea. He looked like Stauffenberg but that was about it. A wonderfully cast movie except for him.
When I was in grade school (and the only Jewish kid in the class) there was this kid named Michael Stauffenberg. I thought, hmmm, maybe he's Jewish. So I asked him. His reply, "Actually my last name is Von Stauffenberg."
at least when it comes to action movies and intelligent scripts.
His willingness and dedication to learning and performing his own stunts is #1 all time for all actors. He literally learned to fly helicopters for his most recent mission impossible movie and pulled off moves within the mountainous terrain that made stunt pilots and master helicopter pilots drop their jaws to the ground. Then hanging off of jets (with a tether obviously), sky diving, running and breaking bones and not wasting the cut, stunt driving, stunt motorcycle driving, ability to hold his breath for minutes while acting, It's all just insane.
He's even driven test laps in an older Red Bull Formula 1 car, the legit kind that raced for real, on a professional road course track (it was Willow Springs International Motorsports Park, if I recall correctly, but not used by F1), and the engineers said his times were remarkable for just getting in the car and going. I think they said he was within a second or so of F1 driver simulated laps and his consistent times showed it wasn't just a one off lap or anything, putting down lap times within tenths/a second of each other over the course of around a 95 second lap time.
And I bet you $100 he could fly in some countries air force in the F-18 given his preparation for the new Top Gun movie, but the US Navy wouldn't let him do that for obvious reasons.
Everything is amazing, and then you get to his story with Scientology where's he essentially viewed as a demigod and it makes people wonder how just insane is he. Good guy, from everything I've heard, but crazy as hell when it comes to a pyramid scheme "religion."
but he's also a pretty good actor. But really he's more of a charismatic personality, like Harrison Ford or Nicholson or Pacino, but not as good an actor as them (except Harrison Ford--he's more like him). But there's nothing wrong with being a movie star. I love most of his movies. He's got pretty good taste in what he chooses. A Few Good Men? Love it. Jerry McGuire? Love it. Decent actor, but no Meryl Streep
Seriously I like the guy. Love him in a lot of movies:
Mission Impossible series
A Few Good Men
Collateral
Edge of Tomorrow
Jerry Maguire (really a borderline classic)
Interview with a Vampire is very underrated with Brad Pitt
Rain Man
I actually like his later stuff better than his earlier stuff. Was never a big fan of Top Gun, Risky Business, Cocktail. Did like the Outsiders and The Right Moves though.
Wow, he has been acting for a long time
Only Tom Cruise could have played lead in Edge of Tomorrow
Yes, Scientology is a bogus, disturbing cult that has ruined lives, and it will always be something of a stain on his reputation.
I will say one thing about Cruise, though. In all of the stories I've ever read/heard about him, I've always noted that he's known for treating everyone on set, down to the lowliest production assistants and interns, with respect. He shows up on time and works his ass off. I'm not sure he's a great actor, but he's at least a pretty good actor who has nailed some great performances (Charlie Babbitt, Lt. Caffey, Maverick, Frank TJ Mackey). He's been in his share of stinker movies, but I don't recall him ever mailing in a performance. You cast Tom Cruise, you're going to get 100% of Tom Cruise.
But here's a list of the great Directors that he's worked for --
Barry Levinson, Brian De Palma, Cameron Crowe, Ed Zwick, Francis Coppola, Franco Zeffirelli, JJ Abrams, Michael Mann, Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Oliver Stone, Scorsese, Speilberg, Kubrick, Sydney Pollack, Robert Redford, and Opie Howard.
I will give at least partial credit to what goes on behind the camera.

Yep. And if you can find a quote from any co star who has shared the set with him that disparaged his character, I'd love to see it. Instead, they all regard him as a good friend.
I've never read about another actor badmouthing him, either.
A lot of actors, at least the big names at least close to Cruise's level of fame, treat crew members poorly. Not all of them are actively nasty or abusive (though some of them absolutely are), but many are just shallow and thoughtless in an almost reflexive way, as if the crew is invisible. Cruise, on the other hand, is polite, generally willing to chat with anyone, and never acts like he's too important to be around anyone.
Source: relatives who used to run an LA catering business who did a fair bit of movie and TV work and had nothing but nice things to say about Cruise, something that wasn't the case for most of the actors they dealt with.
Keanu has always been the guy people point to as aging incredible well, but I think Cruise might have the edge now. Just really impressive. So many actors younger than him have aged out of the roles they used to get, not Tom. Speaks to the kind of lifestyle he lives and how hard he works.
I don't know if he's the "best" actor because a lot of his roles kind of involve him doing the same kind of things, but he's one of the most charismatic actors I've ever seen. Because he's a good enough actor, his caffeinated energy (think Oprah couch jumping) just translates on screen really well.
His personal life is obviously weird to say the least. I'll just say that it's not surprising that someone with his kind of captivating energy ascended to an important position in a cult.
movies because Cruise was cast as the title character.
Normally I'm not a book snob, but I love those books and as mentioned Jack Reacher was an animalistic drifter. he was 6'5 250 pounds and simply looked menacing. he was unkempt and even dirty. I don't see how Cruise could have pulled it off and bore any semblance to the book character and the whole time I would have been subconsciously complaining about the miss in appearance.
I like Cruise and think the movie could probably have been entertaining, almost all the movies he makes are entertaining, but it's not Jack Reacher.
Jack Reacher should have been someone like Jason Momoa, but even he wouldn't have been a perfect fit.
Cruise wants to put out a high quality product in every movie he’s in which earns my respect as a movie watcher.
My favorites: Tropic Thunder, Eyes Wide Shut, Dances with Samurais, Top Gun, and Minority Report.
Dances with Samurais? Lol, sounds like a funny title for a parody movie.
Words can hardly express my loathing for that movie. I mean, the "happy" ending for that movie is that Japan rejects military alignment with the U.S. You know what the result of that was? Japan aligned with Germany, fought on the Axis side in World War II, Pearl Harbor, the Bataan Death March, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That movie actually makes me angry. And its pretentious director, Ed Zwick? Fuck that guy.
RE: Tom cruise is an infinitely better Jack Reacher
than Jason Mamoa would have been. I get the size importance but one guy is the best in the business and the other shouldn’t have lines in movies.
If you are able to forget the size I actually liked him as Reacher, he plays that kind of character perfectly.
I find it hard to believe someone who has read the books can "forget the size" for Jack Reacher it's most of what Jack Reacher's persona is about. At 5' 5" or whatever Cruise is, it's just not Jack Reacher. It's simply not. It can be a great movie and a great character but you might as well call him Rack Jeacher because it's not the character Lee Child created.
Like I said, I'm sure it was entertaining, but I can't buy him as Jack Reacher. The Mamoa suggestion was purely the physical appearance. Mamoa was in a Netflix show called Frontier and it was a Reacher-esque character he played.
Khal Drogo from GOT also a Reacher-esque character.
Cruise playing Reacher is like having Kevin Hart play Shaquille O'Neal in a Shaq biopic.
Anyway, just my opinion, everyone is entitled to theirs (which I will disagree with if it's different than mine on this topic, lol)
Kinda makes no sense when picking a movie he acted very well in. If he wasn’t at least a solid actor he wouldn’t be able to pull off that role, or those in Magnolia and Born on the 4th of July.
No doubt he’s a movie star but like I said earlier, he’s as versatile as they come.
I think he and McQuarrie have really found something and the movies have been getting better outside of MI2.
MI:FALLOUT I thought was the best action movie of the year and it might be in the talk of one of the all time greats.
Seamless CGI and some really incredible set pieces, the parachute scene was unbelievable and the "rescue" of Lane was fantastic. Twists and turns, they set you up with something obvious like "Booker" and the turn it on its head. Fallout had some car chase (motorcycle) scenes that I haven't seen done since, maybe Ronin? I'm not alone, Fallout has one of the best RT scores of that year. Check that one out again if you can, it's really a remarkable effort.
Is he Phillip Seymour Hoffman? No, but who is really.
As a human being the Scientology cult, I don't really understand it. Is it some sort of tax shelter? Something more sinister going on? ALiens and super powers? I dont think he really believes that stuff, but who knows. I think its a financial decision. I also read that they kind of groom actresses for him to meet. No proof of course.
When I saw this topic, the first movie Ithought of
Cruise has been nominated for Oscars multiple times - best actor and supporting actor, and no he hasn't won, but look at the competition those year. He easily could have won for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire. As well as Rain Man.
Just being a two time nominee for best actor oscar twice probably puts him in rarefied air - even without winning.
The "movie star, not an actor" might be a fair criticism today,
but Cruise worked with just about every modern day director.
Francis Ford Coppola in The Outsiders
Ridley Scott in Legend
Tony Scott in Top Gun
Martin Scorsese in The Color of Money
Barry Levinson in Rain Man
Oliver Stone in Born on The Fourth of July
Ron Howard in Far and Away
Rob Reiner in A Few Good Men
Sydney Pollack in The Firm
Brian De Palma in Mission Impossible
Cameron Crowe in Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky
Stanley Jubrick in Eyes Wide Shut
Paul Thomas Anderson in Magnolia
Steven Spielberg in Minority Report and War of The Worlds
John Woo in Mission Impossible 2
Ed Zwick in The Last Samurai
Michael Mann in Collateral
JJ Abrams in Mission Impossible 3
Robert Redford in Lions for Lambs
Ben Stiller in Tropic Thunder
Bryan Singer in Valkyrie
Brad Bird in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
James Mangold in Knight and Day
Doug Liman in Edge of Tomorrow and an upcoming project that is the first movie to be shot in outer space
He's definitely had a career aimed towards blockbusters, and especially science fiction in the past years working with directors Christopher McQuarrie and Joe Kosinski.

Lol. Dustin Hoffman forgot to mention Cruise during his Oscar acceptance speech for best actor.

Agreed. Really liked him in Collateral.

You are always getting 100% from Cruise no matter the role; hell I even like him in Knight & Day.
A Few Good Men, Magnolia and Collateral are probably my favorite performances.
I like Cruise as an actor. A Few Good Men & Jerry Maguire are my two favorites. He seems like a bit of an odd duck, but whatever.
He's a lot like LT.....great on the field, loon off it lol

Agreed, I don’t think he’s as nuts as people think.
His range isn't in the same sentence as someone like DiCaprio or Bale, but he's just really solid. Kind of like Brad Pitt to me, never disappoints.
One of or maybe the only time Cruise played the antagonist role
Great movie with some nice twists, Cruise kinda flip flopped throughout the movie.
Awesome film. Michael Mann is incredibly underrated.
Horrible casting for Jack Reacher though but he made the best of it

It sounds to me like the author created a character that's extremely unlikely to exist in reality. Maybe the Rock should have played him.
If it ever happens, you'll never, EVER see a bigger fall from grace in your life.
