NFT: Switching iphones

Milton : 8/7/2020 5:15 pm
Okay so I just got the Iphone 11 delivered and I want to transfer all my messages, contacts, etc, from my Iphone 6s (it's been that long) without losing them forever. What's the simplest, safest way to accomplish that?
Save your info on the 6 to the iCloud

Then download your info from the iCloud to the 11.

Just make sure all your info is indeed backed up before resetting the 6

What do you mean by "resetting" the 6?
Hey Milton.

If you just got a new iPhone 11 you're entitled to 90 days of phone support even if you didn't buy it from Apple. If you haven't been through this process in a long time, if ever its best to call Apple and let them walk you through it.

That being said the easiest way to do this is to back up the old phone to iCloud and then restore the backup to the new phone. However this will work ONLY IF you have an iCloud account with sufficient space. If you have only the free account you may not. In that case you have to back up the old iPhone to an Apple or Windows computer and then restore to the new phone from that computer. The process for a backup is slightly different if you are running a Windows computer, a Mac running Mohave or earlier or a Mac running Catalina or later.

If you are totally confused you can probably take the phones to an Apple Store, Best Buy or Mobile Kangaroo and have them do it for you,

Just use the migration assistant. You literally just need to put the phones next to one another, press a couple of buttons and let it go. Your new phone will be set up just like your old one with all the files/settings, etc.

I just did it - I had to use an insurance claim on a new iPhone 11 because I busted my screen. It took like 10 minutes. Super easy.
Thanks, guys

I purchased the extra iCloud storage for 99 cents per month and backed up my iPhone to iCloud. It took about 20 or 30 minutes. I still haven't touched my iPhone 11, I'm afraid I'm gonna do something in the wrong order and screw up everything from the transfer to the facial recognition.

Do I turn off the iPhone 6s or do anything specific (resetting?) before I turn on the iPhone 11? Don't know anything about that "migration assistant" suggested above, but as simple as it sounds, I still run into the confusion of what do I turn on and off before tapping into this assistant which I've previously never encountered.

p.s.--I bought the iPhone 11 Pro Max if that makes a difference (figured if I'm gonna upgrade once every five years, I may as well go with the current state of the art capabilities).

Milton - as long as your phone had OS 12.4 or later, this is all you need to do. Super easy...

How to use iPhone migration

1. Turn on your new iPhone and place it near your current iPhone that's using iOS 12.4 or later.

2. If you want to migrate data using a wired connection, connect the devices. The Quick Start screen appears on your current iPhone and offers the option of using your Apple ID to set up your new iPhone.

3. Make sure that it's the Apple ID that you want to use, then tap Continue. If you don't see the option to continue on your current device, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.

4. Wait for an animation to appear on your new iPhone. Hold your current iPhone over the new iPhone, then center the animation in the viewfinder. Wait for a message that says Finish on New iPhone. If you can't use your current iPhone camera, tap Authenticate Manually, then follow the steps that appear.

5. When asked, enter your current iPhone passcode on your new iPhone.

6. Follow the instructions to set up Face ID or Touch ID on your new iPhone.

7. Tap Transfer from iPhone to begin transferring your data from your previous iPhone to your new iPhone. If you're using the wired method, the transfer icon indicates that your devices are connected. You can also choose whether to transfer some settings, such as Apple Pay and Siri, from your previous iPhone to your new iPhone.

8. If you have an Apple Watch and you're setting up a new iPhone, you'll be asked if you'd like to transfer your Apple Watch data and settings.

9. Keep your devices near each other and plugged in to power until the iPhone data migration process is complete. Transfer times can vary based on factors such as the connection type that you're using, network conditions, and the amount of data being transferred.

Yes, this is the way. Just did this with my iphone and a new ipad.
It’s very easy to do.

The new phone takes you through it step by step. Just follow the directions and have your passwords. EasyPeasey.
Success (I think)

I put the two iPhones side by side and let it walk me through the process. I wouldn't call it "super easy, barely an inconvenience" but I got through it (I think). It seems that the old phone is still fully operational. I thought it would turn off or go blank or something.

Shanks peoples!
Two things to note, especially if you have a lot of content

The initial setup is for your settings, preferences and top level apps etc. if you’re setting up via cloud (which is partially what’s going on with the phones side by side), it may take a little extra time for all the photos and music etc to load.

Second, before you wipe the old iPhone, make sure your current phone has all content and everything else you want. You can double check this in your iPhone settings to see how much space is used. While they won’t be identical, they should be very close.

Your old iPhone will function like a mini mini iPad until you decide to reset it to factory or toss it. It’s a fully functional WiFi device, but should also still work with your new SIM card as a backup. Always good to have a *supported* backup.

Enjoy your new phone!
