In an earlier thread about New York Giant TE’s, Zeke Mowatt is an interesting player. A huge thanks to Eric for posting BigBlueVCR’s game tapes from the 80s/90s (Not a member of any social media or else I would have never viewed seen these fantastic clips!). It seemed zeke was a hell of a player. Big, strong, fast, and a matchup nightmare, especially with Bavaro. So here’s my question to BBI! Zeke Mowatt seemed like a dominate player. By looking at his stats, it would indicate he was hurt a lot. Did he fight with Parcells? Did George Young feel a 12 personnel was something not worth investing in (having to pay two TE) Or was the emergence of Mark Bavaro ultimately end Zeke Mowatt tenure with the New York Football Giants? Looking forward to hearing what you guys/gals have to say!
The Patriot Missile
By 1989, the Giants drafted Howard Cross to be the blocking TE opposite Bavaro and were starting to phase Mowatt out. Bavaro tore his ACL in 1989 in San Diego and Mowatt got lots of playing time, but the Giants saw Cross start to develop more. When it came time for Plan B free agency, Mowatt wanted more money, but the Giants were content to have Bavaro come back, with Cross in his 2nd year, and they got another blocking TE in Bob Mrosko. In 1990, the rules changed that the clock kept running on out of bounds plays until 2 min in the first half and 5 min in the 2nd half. So Parcells changed up his gameplan to control the clock and play defense. Mowatt was expendable and was allowed to go to the Patriots, where he decided to do some flashing.
When Bavaro failed his physical in 1991, Mowatt was brought back by the Giants after he was released by the Patriots.
Bottom line, Mowatt was on his way to becoming one of the best TEs in the NFL when he tore his ACL and by the time he got healthy, Bavaro had surpassed him and Cross took away his role as the 2nd TE.

Did he get hurt in camp or the preseson? I thought he was one of a long run of Giants who got hurt playing in the Jets preseason game.

Coming out of 1984, Mowatt was looking like a breakout star at TE. He tore his ACL in training camp in 1985 and opened the door for Bavaro to get lots of playing time as a rookie. Mowatt was tentative coming back in 1986 (because I"m bored, I'm actually going to be posting highlights from the 1980s pre-season games since there is no pre-season to watch on the BigBlueVCR account). And Bavaro quickly became the best TE in the NFL by 1986, so Mowatt was relegated to 2nd TE status. But Mowatt never regained the same explosiveness after his ACL. He was a good TE, but not great.

I think he actually got hurt at Pittsburgh in the preseason in 1985. I’m watching that game tomorrow so I’ll check for sure.

Yes, he got hurt against the Steelers in the last preseason game of 1985 and the rookie Bavaro became the starter and never looked back. Zeke came back in 1986 but he couldn’t beat out Bavaro who became a star in that season. Zeke does have the distinction of being the first Giant to score in a Super Bowl.
(PS to Paulie: it's "dominant," not "dominate." Dominate is always a verb; never an adjective--although many sports fans make this mistake.)
He did worse than that. He came up behind her while she was sitting down interviewing someone else and put his dick against (or practically against) her face. Nowadays, that could (and should) be prosecuted as sexual assault.
