NFT: So tell me again about New Haven Pizza

Named Later : 8/10/2020 11:17 am
I know we just had a Best Pizza thread not too long ago, and folks were raving about the Connecticut variety.

Well, it looks like there's a Wicked Crust Pizza place opening in our area this week. The facebook photos look good....is this really Pizza Nirvana ??

As a side note -- so many of the Mom & Pop restaurants are closing due to the COVID. They just can't make it on the reduced capacity rules. Wicked Crust is jumping right into a closed Andolini's Pizza joint....this was good pie, but their business dried up. This scenario is being repeated at several good smaller eateries.

Is Worcester Street New Haven. Everything else is a wannabe. Pepe’s Sally’s the Spot nothing better. Just don’t try. Cause you will lose.
My company insures the Pepe’s

So I’ve been there a few times (the main location). Personally I think it’s way overrated. Sally’s is great though.

White Clam Pizza is unbelievably fantastic.
My preference is for Modern Apizza, a short drive away

on State Street in New Haven. Italian Bomb from Modern is my favorite pie of all time.

Sally's is awesome. Pepe's is the original. BAR on Crown Street is all star too. Some other good ones in the greater New Haven area (Zuppardi's in West Haven)

Pepe's is great but not heaven like it is made out to be.

Don't sleep on the mashed potato pizza a Bar. Sounds odd but people swear by it...

We'll certainly give the new Wicked Crust Pizza joint a try.

Good Pizza was a mystery to the Charleston area for a long time. Some Pizza places think sausage is that Jimmy Dean crap. We need real sausiccia on the pie.

Andolini's had the right idea, but the COVID put them out of business. I was talking to the guy before he closed, he said the store rent was over $10 grand a month......You've got to sell a lot of pizza to cover that.
Modern, Pepe's, Sally's

All great, IMO. I don't really have a fave out of the 3, all make really good pie
Modern and Ct pizza are the best

I will say this if you like a mild char taste to the crust as a classic option Pepe's is great. I personally don't favor that style.
CT pizza is tops for me as well

definitely New Haven, although there's some really good spots scattered throughout the state.

I'm very much a plain pizza kind of guy. If those aren't good I'm not going to bother with the intricate toppings. When I was at UConn we used to go to Willington pizza every so often so I've had the potato pizza before - its fine if you are into it but it isn't my thing. I'll eat it if someone orders it but i'll stick to the regular stuff normally.
I'm a fan of Modern

Great pizza without the attitude of Pepe's and especially Sally's

What I wouldn't give for a good White Clam Pizza. Been years since I've had one.
