TV in 2020 is not what it was in 2000. When this century began, "streaming" was something that might refer to a river, not a way to watch TV shows and movies. The big four broadcast networks still reigned. People sat through commercials to get their nightly programming fix. Over the two decades that followed, the medium has gone through multiple Golden Ages, as Difficult Men dramas gave way to Complicated Women Sagas, and the rise of streaming services flooded our screens with Too Much TV.
It's with all of this in mind that we set about arguing out this list of the greatest television characters of the 21st century, an excruciating endeavor that will surely make some readers mad. And yet we went ahead with this fool's errand because TV has never been more vital. We've realized this while sitting at home for the past few months, holding our Netflix subscriptions close to our chests and bingeing all that we can to quiet the chaos of the world outside.

I will watch that show 10x times in my lifetime
he is ingrained in my mind forever
wtf?
Exactly.
Tami Taylor is number 3? Really?
This list is garbage.
Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) didn't even make the top 100?
Michael Scott below David Brent. NO!
Not one character from NCIS?
The writer missed a whole lot. Even by the low standards of the whole "top X list" genre this one's pathetic.
Snubs...
Agree on Draper and Tony Soprano also...
Stringer Bell
Tywin Lannister
Gus Frings
Richard Splett from Veep
Randy Marsh
Rafi from The League
Glad to see some NoHo Hank (Barry), Roman DeBeers (Party Down), Jared Dunn (Silivon Valley) and general Broad City love on there.
Walter White and Charlie Kelly are absolutely not getting their due in this list. If anything, Saul and Walter White should be fairly close together.
Makes it even dumber - would be like ranking the top baseball players of all time and limiting it to one per team thus excluding Lou Gehring and Joe Dimaggio or ranking top players of the 1940's and not including Ted Williams because he started playing in 1939. Just a complete bunch of morons.
Yeah that's why I was simply happy that my 2 favorite shows of all time were at least represented...and can't argue with their picks...
Abed and Nora Durst... each should have won an Emmy for their performances.
Quote:
“ We limited ourselves to only one character from each show (our discussion of Arrested Development got particularly heated), and we only considered shows that began on or after January 1, 2000 (so, no The Sopranos).”

Danny Pudi and Carrie Coon, respectively, of course.
Either way, Al Swearingen is my #1.
It's a laughable list. No Lorne Malvo? Seriously?
Schitt's Creek is a great show, the best character shouldn't be Moira Rose... the son, David Rose is the unquestionable heart of that show.
Supposed to be one character from each show, so why two from "the Office"?
Shameless is another great show, but Fiona isn't the star of that show by any measure. Big snub to William H. Macy.
No love for "the Middle"? I thought this was a great show, but picking the best is tough. I'll go with Axl Heck.
Also... no love for "Ozark"? No question that Marty Byrd is one of the most complex characters on any show.
"Vikings" is missing a spot. Although he bowed-out a few seasons ago, Ragnar Lothbrok is an indelible TV character; might even defer to the son, Bjorn.
Steven Colbert... really?!
No "Big Bang Theory"? Come on... I know the show dragged on a little too long (so did Friends), but you have to give it to Sheldon Cooper.
Thankfully... no "Two Broke Girls" that show is a stain on entertainment that will remain for a long time.
Outside of him, I'd say it's - another Daily Show alumni - Steve Carell - his Michael Scott was OUTSTANDING - I don't know if any single character in history has made me laugh and cringe as much - his portrayal of Scott was dynamite. My kids have each on their own fallen in love with that series, watching every single episode.
Was there a more interesting female character than Carmela Soprano?
Was there a more interesting female character than Carmela Soprano?
You're not noticing a pattern here?
thats funny
I am glad that Vic Mackey got some recognition, and Stringer Bell should have been on the list but...
