It seems every offseason there's a 'Cowboys are in salary cap hell' thread, but it never comes to pass.
So true but if the cap decreases to $175 million the Cowboys will be in deep shit unless they decide to let Prescott walk. According to spotrac the Cowboys have $183 million committed to next years cap.
That doesn't include FA's Dak Prescott, Andy Dalton, DE Tyrone Crawford, S Haha Clinton Dix, CB Jourdan Lewis, CB Chidobe Awuzie, CB Daryl Worley, LB Sean Lee, and S Xavier Woods.

The only two players that I'm predicting Dallas will make an offer to are Awuzie and Woods. Prescott will be tagged, but with the non exclusive.
There have been articles written how Dallas could create enough space to sign more players if needed by restructuring Lawrence, Cooper, Elliott, J. Smith, Collins, Martin, and others. They have the flexibility if they choose to. This is how Dallas structures all their contracts.
Vander Esch, Jaylon Smith, Aldon Smith, DeMarcus Lawerence, Dontari Poe, Gerald McCoy and now Everson Griffin... come the fuck on... they are even more stacked on Offense too... imagine if they gave up the picks for Jamal Adams??? I hate to say it but Dallas is probably going to be really good this year... they also signed Greg 'The Leg' Zuerlein the all pro kicker... crazy
One wonders how well Aldon Smith, Gerald McCoy, Lee
Well that sucks.
Seems their plan is draft well, and extend before they become FA. That’s how you have T.smith making 10mil vs. solder making 20 mil.
Smith has also been restructured (twice, IIRC), so his $10MM salary reflects his having received chunks of bonus cash along the way.
I don’t think Dallas’s contract management is anything special. Once you draft a Tyron Smith, the rest is relatively easy. If you draft Ereck Flowers, there isn’t much your cap guy can do. Even with Smith, Dallas has had a few scares due to nagging injuries that might have left them with a heap of dead money.
They still can't stop the run and they lost their best CB. Losing Garrett is going to hurt that team, the fans won't believe it, but now you have a puppet of a head coach who will do whatever Jerry Jones wants. McCarthy rooked Jones into rushing to hire him, he will regret it.
Obviously, Rodgers is a huge part pof that but they have always been solid offensively. And, he's got some tools to work with in Dallas. McCarthy's issue has generally been that the defense did nothold up their end of the bargain. I don't get the McCarthy dissing.
Griffin's on the tail end of his career but has some plays left in the tank.
Biggets issues for Dallas this year will be how McCarthy manages a lot of those personalities and Jerrah's meddling.

I believe the knoock on McCarthy is that he is not a hands on coach. He relies heavily on his staff to do the work while he is getting his knob polished at the massage parlor. There have been several stories on this he was not present as much as he should have been planning for big games. If he tries to use Dak like he used Rogers it wont work. That O needs to run through Elliott imo. GB was always pass to set up the run.
not buying that tho... Lee and Aldon, yeah... Mccoy and Poe, maybe... but they Griffin is still stout, DLaw is explosive and Leighton and Jaylon are studs...
Could be a short year, players getting hurt, injured etc. They are a playoff team. You exercise any available resources to mitigate los of players and you add another weapon. It helps.
Had we signed him and not Golden, I think people would be singing a different tune
Ummm... They didn't resign the best player in their secondary. This is how the Cowboys always do it they let good players walk. They will again next year. They draft well so they cover this over but we've won 2 SB since their last one and since their last SB their playoff record is 4-10. So just what are they accomplishing with this strategy.

To be honest I would be more worried if this was 2-4 years ago.
Giants aren't in position to really use these players, or just Griffen, to put them over the top. Doesn't make sense to me to wring hands over it.
Exactly, I feel like the Cowboys are about two years ahead of the Giants. We will be at a competitive level soon enough, but no reason to waste money on older players when a terrific record for us this year would be 8-8. We have a second year QB and tons of players in their first or second year in the league.
past their primes and long in the tooth, including Griffen. Feels like a Hail Mary before their core starts to decline.
Dallas signs bridge players till they draft the next starter. This year's free agent class is just that. Dalton, Clinton-Dix, McCoy, Poe, Griffen, and Smith will very likely be one year Cowboys.
It looks like Dallas is not signing and losing players every year. But they have addressed these losses in their draft choices, past, present, and future. If you look at this year's draft class you can see this.
Under Stephen Jones Dallas doesn't believe in building a team through free agency. Stephen is cheap and believes in signing cost effective players for the short term and the draft is for the long term.
Their biggest defense question is Vander Esch - awesome player, but generally neck surgery and football do not go together well. All positive talk now, but once hitting starts, who knows
For the Giants it always comes down to the Giants defense trying to stop Dallas

This is quite right.
Vander Esch has said he is 100%, but this neck issue will linger all year, and probably the rest of his career.
Dallas has some depth at this position, but nothing to replace Vander Esch, Smith, or Lee. ESPN did a positional ranking for the entire league and they rated Dallas #2 for LBers. But an injury to the starters would change that dramatically.
not buying that tho... Lee and Aldon, yeah... Mccoy and Poe, maybe... but they Griffin is still stout, DLaw is explosive and Leighton and Jaylon are studs...
Three guys are. Even LVE has health issues.
No one in the secondary scares an offense. McCoy and Poe were leading a pathetic run defense in Carolina once Short got hurt. Griffen had Linval Joseph and Danielle Hunter on his DL in Minnesota.
And Zuerlein had under 73% last year. And he was kicking in LA and other warm places. Let's see how it goes in DC, MetLife or at the Linc when it's cold. Dude is all name at this point.
You've got to tip your hat to the Cowboys right now.
They are going for it. They have an outstanding Defense on paper and yet they are still looking to make additions.
Giants have to get back to having a strong roster top to bottom, and they are still very far away. So far that a Griffin signing would be meaningless here.
if you watch the link, on his one on one matchups - he's given his opponent all they can handle and more (Staley). In fact, they even double him on a few plays. The film doesn't lie

Lawrence- while I expect him to rebound a bit, coming off a 5 sack season.
Poe- 30 years old and has regressed a bit last 2 seasons.
McCoy- 32 years old, was not the same dynamic rusher last year.
Aldon Smith- 31 years old, hasn't played since 2015. Last full season was 2012(!!!)
Griffin- 32 years old, still very good but not the player he was in 2017. There is a reason he signed this late for only $6m

Didn’t he get all 5 sacks against us?

True in prior years, but the Cowboys had $90M in available cap space following the 2019 season.
That's because they had to re-sign half their team (Jones - left as an UFA, Lawrence, Zeke, Smith).

Exactly. Who gives a fu*k?
I'd guess if Aldon Smith performed like a stud stepping off the bus, signing Griffen wouldn't have gotten done?
But good for Jerry to go all in on a year that might not happen...

I agree. Which is why i didn't understand the want for Cockrell. He should have been retained before. No reason to sign him now.

averaged 4.8 per attempt. Elliot still arguably best rb in the league
even at this point in his career, strong, physical, relentless and he can move
