Through the Years: New York Giants Training Camp

View rare photos of Giants training camp through the years.

Wow, I miss going up to Albany with my family quite a lot. So much fun!

Also, I used to visit Giants in Pleasantville which is just a few miles from where I live. I remember talking to a rookie LBer when a very mean-looking Harry Carson started walking over to us. The LBer took one look, put on his helmet and uttered, "I better go."

I went to camps at Pace University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, SUNY Albany, and East Rutherford.

Like you, I remember Harry sticking out at Pace. He used to walk the sidelines towards the end of practice with no shirt on, showing off his muscles.

The Giants trained at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT from 1961 to 1969 and again in 1974.

Many players from the Glory Days lived in Connecticut. I met Jimmy Patton and John Lovotere when they came to the very small delicatessen I worked at in 1965 (I think that was the year) where I worked in Riverside (Greenwich), CT while I was in high school. My boss arranged their visit and I still have their autographed pictures.

I was taken aback to see Jimmy Patton smoking cigarettes. Andy Robustelli had a sporting goods store in Greenwich and later Stamford. His son was a quarterback for Stamford Catholic High. Bobby Valentine was a star quarterback for Rippowam High School in Stamford.

And at Greenwich High School a year before I got there Sam Rutigiano was our football coach. He went onto to coach the Browns. One of the later head coaches for Greenwich High was Dave Rice who was on the New York Titans.

Of course Steve Young played for Greenwich High after my time there.
I moved to Vermont

about 8 years ago....I was told several stories about the Giants, after their '56 World Championship, holding training camp at Saint Michael's College. The team would hold open public workouts which resulted in their strong fan following in Northern Vermont.

It's a pic of a large crowd from 2009 training camp. Not going to tell you which person is me, but I'm in there. Awesome! Link of the particular photo I'm in is linked below.
