Great story, character development. Combat is turn based and you can adjust it to your preferred difficulty and play style. Highly recommend.

I assume you also looked at some of the big AAA RPGs over the last few years...

I just bear Outer Worlds. Great game...not a huge endless 100 hour rpg, which I appreciated. If you're into Fallout but want something less intimidating I recommend. (Just don't get it on switch...it runs like garbage).

I hear nothing but good things about Divinity OS2. Is the combat straight forward or is it overly complex? I don't ming difficult but sometimes when there's too much choice it can be a slog to get through.

I haven't played many of the AAA titles since I generally like to play them on my Switch (long battles can be paused, same with cut scenes).

I tried Outerworlds and it wasn't for me. It might be because I just played Borderlands 3 and was just burnt out from that style of game. I'm looking for more of a traditional JRPG or Tactical RPG. Pretty annoying that Final Fantasy Tactics isn't available on Switch.

is turn based and reminded me a lot of final fantasy tactics. It’s not hard to understand but the game will challenge you even on normal difficulty. The inventory is a bit of a slog to manage (I played on pc) but gets easier when you get the hang of it. It was one of my favorite games this generation.

If you have a switch, you might want to consider fire emblem three houses also. And... PS4s are cheap. Get the FF7 remake!

Side note have you played Dragon Quest 11? I loved the first half of it but I couldn't finish, the story goes completely on its head later in the game and just lost interest.

I’ve always loved dragon quest and played a lot of DQ11 but the game is just endless and there’s a 25+ hour epilogue too. I beat the “final” boss but never went beyond that. The awful soundtrack really hurt an otherwise nice game. I agree that the story was pretty generic.

Imo, divinity 2 has a bit of a learning curve and I didn’t get into it until I bought divinity 1 which I found much easier to pickup off the start. If you don’t mind playing a game a bit dated graphically start with 1. Both divinity games are considered classics.

One random feature Divinity 2 has cross saves between switch and steam on pc so you can play the same game save across both platforms. Pretty cool wish more games did that and across more platforms.


Have you played darkest dungeon and fire emblem on switch? Those are in the tactical / Turn based rpg ballpark

Wasteland 2 was decently Wasteland 3 supposed to come out shortly...Turn based RPG.

Is a great turn based tactical rpg with a lot of jrpg elements and feel to it. It’s a little too easy which is my biggest complaint there isn’t a way to increase the difficulty. But it’s great how you build your class (basically houses like hogwarts) and there’s decent team building elements. I really like XCOM 2 which is pretty overwhelming haha and this is sort of similar but a much easier Nintendo version of the genre

but I figured this is as good of a place as any. My son is 5. He has a switch. He's not great at it but getting better. We have Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Fortnite (too advanced for him), and the Sega Package where he loves playing Sonic.

What games would be good for him? I don't care about violence or anything scary. I just want something fun and entertaining where he will be able to actually play it at his level of play.

...DQ11. Started slow but picked up and had the chance to really take off around the time you find out the main character's true background. But it gradually fizzled from there and literally spoon fed you everything along the way in terms of advancing the story. All the challenge is in the optional stuff.

I'm maybe 1/2 way through the epilogue and taking a break. I will probably go back but it just felt like the entire development of the game was disorganized and littered with missed opportunities and half-thoughts.

Started the FF VII remake a few weeks ago but either haven't had time or too tired at night to play. I'm mixed on it largely because of the battle system. Admittedly I went in completely blind and have no experience on games with this type of battle format so I may need to actually prep a little. But, at first blush I think given the vast number of options a character has in battle in FF games that it's going to be cumbersome to get an engaged feeling with a party of 3. Not to mention - at least what I've played so far (I'm doing initial merc jobs in Sector 7 so not too far in) - its a huge change to not be able to see more of what's going on in battle. Feel very blind at times but could be more of the dark atmosphere/lighting in Midgar. I do like the Advent Children overall feel to the game though.

All in all I was expecting just a more graphically/voice enhanced version of the original and I got more than I expected - probably just need to get my aging ass up to speed.

Mario Odyssey might be a good place for him to start. He can get used to running around in a 3d space, and the game is colorful and visually pleasing. and you can't really "die".

I'll check them out.

Splatoon is a really good game. Its a third person shooter but you are shooting "paint" to gain/expand your teams territory. It isn't violent at all, but is a good intro into that style of game.

Thanks. That sounds fun. Video game violence doesn't bother me though. He watches shows with my wife and I on tv that we probably shouldn't show him but he's good with it. We actually watched Thriller on YouTube and I kept telling him he was going to get scared because it has werewolves and zombies. He was so into it. Lol.

at that age Splatoon is good. Mario vs. Sonic Olympics is good as well.

If you think he might like sports games, there's NBA 2k Playgrounds 2. It's basically a modern version of NBA jam. Very simple and fun to play.

I played DQ11 and beat it recently. I thought it was over at about 40 hours but ended up playing it until the "end". Because the game could end two different times before it ACTUALLY ends. That being said, it was great. The "epilogue" is essentially another whole game where you find out what happened to the characters, but have a lot of additional content.

I was glad when I beat it because it ended up being really fun, but also because that sort of game is too long for me now.

I'm gotten pretty heavy into Slay the Spire-esque games. They're more suited for playing for a bit and walking away from.

now I'm curious if I actually beat it or not. Spoilers below.





I'm up to when all of the players got dispersed and do solo quests (which I hated).

real big into this stuff says paper mario on the switch is a great move.

Animal crossing is a good one for the kid, mindless stuff but keeps ya busy.

Hang in there with the combat. I didn't like it at first, but once I really got the hang of out, I really enjoyed it. There's some nice fights later on in the game that really flush it all out. Don't be afraid to look at a guide for tips in a tough fight (which helped me understand the system better).

I think FF7RE was the first game that really felt like FF since FF10.

Divinity Sin 2 ... they are making BG3 by the way ...

They break it up into 3 different acts when referring to it on reddit and stuff.

The first act ends at Yggdrasil. So I think you're in the second act currently.

The second act sort of ends the story, but there's a lot of weird things that aren't explained until you play the 3rd act. I mean, at the time I think I was annoyed because I thought I was close to the end of the game each of the times I got toward the end of the act.

The "epilogue" or 3rd act is actually like another 20+ hours of gameplay if you do everything.

Don't know if available for those platforms tho.
