NFT: Where to buy outdoors equipment for great price?

glowrider : 8/20/2020 9:44 am
I’ve been putting together a camping set up. I’ve gotten most stuff off of Amazon so far. I have not found better prices at Dicks or REI or Camping World. Walmart is hit or miss online. Haven’t tried Costco.

Any suggestions? Mostly accessories left at this point to get, some lighting, cutlery, folding chairs/table, and also looking into sleeping bags, too. If amazon is the best, ok, but if there’re better sources, I’m happy to try. I search slickdeals.com first but haven’t been lucky yet.

Thanks!
I was going to suggest Amazon

Great quality stuff....plenty to compare and at prices that are very hard to beat.

.....that company is a beast
100% but I’ll tell you, the amazon marketplace is really

Getting overrun with garbage and lousy sellers. The reviews are generally way more polarized than in the past. Even the AmazonBasics or Amazon Choice stuff isn’t getting universal plaudits as priorly. I wonder if pandemic has watered the site down?

I find something on campmor (linked below), or Cabelas/Bass Pro (especially if you get something at Cabelas or Bass Pro labeled as their own brand - or walk through the store - they have good deals).

But Amazon is nudging everyone out of every market.
Campmor - ( New Window )
Where you at?

Sierra Trading has a lot of great stuff at great prices. I go to the one in Danbury all the time. It's like the TJ Max for Men's clothes and outdoor gear.

If you happen to go to Lake George, whenever I camp up there I always hit the Coleman outlet.

Other than that it's online (Amazon as suggested) for me anyway.
Currently in NYC, but I will go upstate for camping

I was checking out Cabelas/Bass Pro for their white label camp cots and browsed around but, frankly, Amazon beats them. Dick’s had a 40-50% flash sale yesterday and still Amazon was better.

Don’t get me wrong - my Prime membership is from Day 1, but when it comes to judging quality, it’s tough to do and the comments/reviews are filled with spam and bs.

I suppose the buy two, return one method still works. Thanks for info guys!

A lot of stuff you can pretty much look at price.

I think you need to research sleeping bags a little, unless you only plan to sleep outside in summer weather.

Moosejaw. Big retail selection, responsive customer service, quick shipping, good rewards program. I'm a new fan, but a fan nonetheless.

Thanks. That’s good to know. I am willing to pay a bit more for a long term investment, but I’d like to find the best deal. Enamel and steel over paper and disposable plastic, etc. I’ve reallocated this year’s travel and leisure budget from air tickets and hotels into a new/upgraded camping setup as I figure we won’t be freely traveling anytime soon, otherwise. Since this equipment can last for years, this is a good opportunity to upgrade the cheap junk in storage, and maybe camp more often in this COVID world.

While being a fair weather camper, I’ve been investing a lot of time (and money) into the sleeping arrangements in this new setup for three season use. Right now leaning towards traditional bedding for drive up sites, but I’d like new bags at some point.

YouTube is amazing. Can get lost for hours, especially on 1.5x speed. Started off researching self inflating mattress pads and ended up watching a 10+ minute video of someone torture testing water bottles. Do I need a new water carrier? Nope. Was it fantastic entertainment? You bet!.

Appreciate all advice!

I’ll definitely toss some business their way if my Weber doesnt work anymore. I like some of their cooking systems more than the Coleman stoves!
REI has a membership club

Also if you have a Camping World near you, they are worth checking out. I have found some great deals there when something was on sale.
Thanks guys - lots of great stuff and it is hard to beat Amazon

But now I’ve got my eyes on the bargain bins at a few places and no need to rush as I’m sure with new Fall items will come even more closeouts, particularly heading to Labor Day.
Some more...

Back Country and Campmor and sportsmen.com. Bought gear from all - first quality, great returns, yada, yada.
Don’t know why it didn’t occur to me at first but

Bed, Bath and Beyond has been sending me 20% off coupons since 1812, and they have a camping section, along with just usual stuff that can be used.
