I just sent this link to my brothers and sisters. We've been sharing songs all day. Not sure who knows who Tommy Stinson (original the bassist for The Replacements) is, but his band Bash and Pop rock like it's supposed to be done. Love this sound. Bash and Pop - ( New Window )
in country - and if anyone has some country for beginners recommendations please share - there was a jazz thread on here a while ago (maybe even 10 years) that I learned a ton from.
I'm also expanding on my punk affinity and I really like PUP from Canada.
Morbid Stuff is great beginning to end, but Kids is infectious. They even did a Christmas version of the song that is equally infectious.
I love the Kids video, just oozes with irony, like most punk music.

PJ- The most interesting thing to happen to country music in the last 20 years is Orville Peck. Check him out. His voice is like Roy Orbison and Chris Isaak had a son. And that son was into country rock and bondage masks. Yup, you read that correctly. Orville Peck- Dead of Night - ( New Window )

lol, with a description like that, how can I not click the link and listen.
Got to see him twice last fall/winter before the quarantine, might've been the last show I saw actually. In any case, it was a goddamn spectacle and I would highly recommend anyone with a chance to see this guy do so before he blows up, because he's on that trajectory and the small venues are always the best. Hard to believe its been almost 20 years since he was with DBT.
As for Peck, hes definitely unique. He's quickly cultivated a pretty distinct aesthetic that somehow just works. He actually started in a slew of punk/grunge bands and you can definitelt hear that influence in some of his stuff, especially live. His shows are great and that voice is legit, not just studio magic. His debut, Pony, was my favorite album of last year and he just released a new ep.
It's not one of his classics, but cannot listen to this one by...

Gonna try to catch him when the shit storm passes. Thanks for the tip! Isbell is a fucking genius. DTB is still great without him, though I could do without the political commentary...like everywhere else, I guess. It just comes with the scenery these days, I suppose.
My guilty pleasure band...Blue Oyster Cult has a new album out in October. Eric Bloom, singing lead on this ,is 76 years old. Yes. 76 BOC - That Was Me. - ( New Window )
For more alt-country-ish type of music, in addition to Jason Isbell, check out Lucero, Justin Townes Earle (recently passed away), American Aquariam, and Marcus King Band. Although Marcus King is more Southern Rock than country/alt country.
Currently, the song I’m listening to is “I’m Torn Up” by St. Paul and the Broken Bones.
Rnargi good call on Bash and Pop, which also features Steve Selvidge who is also a member of The Hold Steady.

Gregory Alan Isakov's 2018 album had a couple of nice ones in San Luis and Where You Gonna Go. Amsterdam, If I go I'm goin, Second Chances, Big Black Car, That Moon Song and, of course, his cover of Trapeze Swinger are all very good tunes.

Thanks for this rec, just went down the PUP rabbit hole, some really good stuff.
Thing is they played "Level" that blends into Steady as she goes. If you jump to the 30 minute mark in the link directly below it is the start of them playing Level, then into Steady as she goes.

pj...The Hold Steady and Lucero both opened for the Replacements in Minneapolis on their homecoming show during their reunion tour. It was glorious. One of the greatest music days of my life. Great bands and a perfect fit that day,
I've seen Marcus King Band several times...GREAT live show. Last time was last summer with TTB. He played with them for a few songs, and he fit right in.

Forgot to add, but I agree with your St. Paul/Broken Bones...love them. Also digging every single thing I can find by Nathaniel Raitliff (and the Night Sweats)
Great version, and have been listening to them since. I hear a lot of Bruce Springsteen in them - possibly because that cover is how I found out about them.
But I also hear Bruce in Gaslight Anthem (lyrics mostly for them), so maybe it's a New York/New Jersey singer/band thing
speaking of...Bruce has a new album coming out with the E Street Band.

love 1st two skid row albums
Now that I'm older I'm trying to give it a shot, but still not a fan, LOL.
However I'm trying to have an open mind and give it more of a shot. It's the only music I don't like.
Right now it's Hank Williams Jr's. greatest hits.
I will admit A Country Boy Can Survive is a good song.

WOW Great voice! Weird video, lol. My fave "country" guy right now is Jason Isbell. Incredible writer.

Can't go wrong with the 70s outlaw stuff: Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe.
Uncle Tupelo is great for something more recent and "alt" (but still 30 years old by now).

One country band worth a listen is the Brothers Osborne. Stay with this one til the guitar work at the end.
