Surprising Raanan take on week 1

PepperJ52 : 9/11/2020 12:56 pm
Didn’t see this posted but if it’s German, I’ll delete. I was surprised to hear his preview.
Breaking Big Blue - ( New Window )
What is surprising that he picked us to lose Monday
Essex : 9/11/2020 1:13 pm : link
35-17 instead of 48-17. In all seriousness, I did not listen, but please save us the hour and tell us what the surprise is (my guess is playoffs???)
He predicts a victory

Raanan, for week 1
PepperJ52 : 9/11/2020 1:29 pm : link
Predicts the Giants not only beat the spread, but win outright ( I think he said 24-21) and forecasts 6-8 wins this year. He’s bullish on the Giants making major progress this year and on track for realistically being above .500 in 2021. He thinks Barkley will have a monster season this year.

Has Jordan been kidnapped? Brainwashed? Drug tested?
I think this game can be stolen.

With intensity. I do believe the Giants will be very fired up. I find it reasonable that Steelers might come out a little flat. If we are honest, The Giants have been the worst team in football over the last 3 years. The Steelers expect to win this game. With no preseason, there should be some turnovers. If the Giants play with fire and limit turnovers, this game could be a win. Week 6-7 I think the Steelers win by 2 TDs. Week 1 with no preseason, I think we have chance.
I think 6 or more wins
David B. : 9/11/2020 1:38 pm : link
this year would be a definite sign the arrow is pointing up. That's about all I'm hoping for.
there's always some weird stuff that can happen early in the season
OdellBeckhamJr : 9/11/2020 1:49 pm : link
especially this year with no preseason and a short camp. Who knows, maybe Roethlisberger lays an egg.
Like all future H of F QBs

including our own beloved Eli - the talk EVENTUALLY becomes -have they lost it?

That talk starts Tuesday morning in Pittsburgh.

Ben in 2019 Week 1:

vs. NE 27-47, 276 yards, INT, fumble (not lost)

Ben in 2018 Week 1:

vs. CLE 23-41, 335 yards, TD, 3 INT, 2 fumbles (lost)

Ben in 2017 Week 1:

vs. CLE 24-36, 263 yards, 2 TDs, INT

Ben in 2016 Week 1:

vs. WSH 27-37, 300 yards, 3 TD, INT, 2 fumble (not lost)

Basically. He's prone to mistakes as seen but he's also thrown the ball an awful lot. However, in 2016-2017, he had this guy named Antonio Brown playing. Not saying he won't play great - Giants D may be sluggish due to the new staff and players adjusting to the defense and calls - but if he makes turnovers like that Mondsy and Garrett can minimize the offense a bit to limit the Steelers pass-rush, they can steal a win. They tied the goddam Browns who stunk and he had 5 turnovers and Cleveland missed several FG' to win it late.

Not sure I see us "stealing" this W, but I definitely can see a win against the Bears in week 2. I've seen a lot of people chalk that game up as a loss - I think that's a very winnable game.

Hell, the Giants were putrid in 2019 and almost beat the Bears anyway! If Chicago loses game 1 to the Lions, Trubisky's going to be under a lot of pressure...

Yeah, I think we match up well - Trubisky doesn't scare me at all as a passer. I think the Giants will defend the run effectively and I think offensively, we should be able to put some points on the board.

No reason why we can't win that game.
Oh please any game can be stolen
djm : 9/11/2020 2:35 pm : link
Any team can surprise for a season let alone just for one game.

Giants aren’t the 1980 saints. This isn’t the 78 Steelers.
I'm always been fairly optimistic at the start for the season
X : 9/11/2020 3:02 pm : link
for the Giants, even in the 70's when we really sucked. Back then the only way to improve was through the draft or a trade, no FA.

This year I don't feel that way with a 2nd year QB (I like DJ) behind a line with 3 new starters and no pre-season games to help them. The DB's are also worrisome. I hope I'm wrong but I think Pittsburgh will beat us bad as will the next 4 teams.
Man fuck a 6 win season
JoeyBigBlue : 9/11/2020 3:08 pm : link
I know our schedule is tough, but I want at least 7 wins this season. 3 straight seasons with double digit losses has made this once proud franchise into an NFL joke. If we don’t hit at least 7 wins, this season will be a major disappointment.
I had Pittsburgh by 14 or more a week ago
SGMen : 9/11/2020 4:30 pm : link
Pittsburgh is going to WIN. Now, can "luck" come into play and perhaps they get hit with injuries in game followed by mishap turnovers? We jump out and somehow keep it close for a win? 5% chance...

Pittsburgh has a superb pass rush unit and they will get to Daniel Jones. The Giants are also going to make mistakes and be out of position as this is a new offense and a new defense. No pre-season, young OL, new systems, I just think too many things are against us for us to win one from Pittsburgh.
My 2 cents:
81_Great_Dane : 9/11/2020 5:41 pm : link
1) New HC, new coordinators, lots of rookies, limited offseason program. In a normal year, you'd expect them to need 2-3 games just to execute the plays confidently. That favors the Steelers.

2) Every team had a limited offseason program. That favors teams with continuity. Probably veteran teams. However, it means that everybody's going to be shaking off some rust week 1.

3) Though the Giants have new coaches, we think those are upgrades. That counts for a lot.

4) The Giants are going to be hard to prepare for Week 1 because of those upgrades, and because JJ wants them to be hard to prepare for.

5) Rookies have never played in an NFL game of any kind. Normally, they are unprepared for the intensity of NFL games. This year, with no crowd, who knows?

6) Several 2nd and 3rd-year Giants should benefit from having some experience and better coaching. Daniel Jones, Darius Clayton, etc.
I hate to be pessimistic
Pete44 : 9/11/2020 5:51 pm : link
but.... This is a horrible match-up for the Giants with the Steelers D vs. Giants offensive line and Big Ben picking on Ballentine all night. Giants emotion in the first half keeps it close. 34-17 Steelers.

It's week 1 and the Steelers are going to come out flat while the Giants will have extra fire? My goodness.
I'm not sold on Ben being back to normal
George : 9/11/2020 8:20 pm : link
He's, what, 38 and coming of a significant injury. Never mobile to begin with, Ben's about the most earth-bound QB in the league right now.

I can see us winning this game.

I'm not sure I see us winning more than four others in 2020 though.
Most here are making assessments based on what?
G-crew18 : 9/11/2020 8:40 pm : link
The Giants play the last 3 years? The Steelers supposed invincibility? Last years Steelers defensive stats? The youth of the Giants team? There is nothing significant or concrete to base an analytical assessment on the 2020 NY Giants football team except that they have been coached hard this training camp and the players have embraced the challenge and are buying in to the program.

HC Joe Judge has been mentored by a master strategist and has continuously reinforced his views on the game plan approach. There are hundreds of hours of Steeler game tape to form a fairly concrete idea of tendencies on down and distance, defensive strategy.

Mike Tomlin has been studying a Dallas Cowboy offense who have no Saquon Barkley, Evan Engram. Darius Slayton. Also, don't you think the Giants coaching brain trust knows this and won't use it to their advantage? Of all the new HC's this season coach Judge is the greatest enigma to forecast. The hardest adversary to prepare for is one who's unknown.

I for one am taking HC Judge at his word, identify weaknesses and exploit them. Play downhill with a relentless, aggressive attitude, an in your face demeanor. The last time we witnessed a Giants team with such demeanor was 2008 until the Burress fiasco before that 1990. What I have witnessed so far is Parcellian which gives me reason for optimism. I don't think many in the fanbase are prepared for true NY Giants football for some it will be welcomed deja vous.

Giants 35-21, say hello to the crunch bunch part deux.

Big Ben likely isn't the guy he was 3 or more years ago. 38 is 38 and he likely is a pure statue now. However, Pittsburgh has him back as the starter so he likely has enough left to lead them.

If he does tank Monday night with a horrid performance well we have a shot.
Ben is done like Eli and Rivers (who the Chargers gave up on)
PatersonPlank : 9/11/2020 10:12 pm : link
his two peers.

Pittsburgh has made a major mistake not going after his replacement like the Giants and Chargers have done, and no I don't think Rudolph is a replacement.
I think
PaulN : 9/12/2020 9:16 am : link
We have a chance of stealing the game, not that we will probably steal it, but there is a shot, with no preseason and Ben being lost last season and he is getting up there, we have a chance.
Steeler's D
uther99 : 9/12/2020 4:08 pm : link
will focus on neutralizing Barkley. Our WRs are nothing special, Engram is not game changing.

I see Giants scoring around 20 and Pitt scoring 30
Ben is done?
royhobbs7 : 9/13/2020 1:28 am : link
Well let's hope that Ben is done. However, he can still heave the rock and although he is 38 and so is Rivers on Indy, they are both far from done. Those who are of the belief that because Eli was the first one of the 2004 triumvirate QB class to age, doesn't necessarily mean that is also true of Roethlisberger and Rivers. And unfortunately, we will see that on Monday night at Met Life. Those who watch Indy pulverize Jacksonville will see that Rivers has also found the fountain of youth!
Our Giants will need to progress thru significant growing pains this year. But it will take at least this year and maybe next before BLUE starts to ascend to the NFC East throne. But no matter, we will.

Been watching for 60+ years and have seen this before in our Jints.

I do believe Engram has the "potential" to be a game-changing TE / HBack. But he has to stay healthy which is something he hasn't been able to do.

Camp reports said his blocking has really improved. If he can stay on the field more and stay healthy, he will beat LB's like a drum. If Jones hits him in stride he is gone just like Barkley is gone.

If Golden Tate can't go or is limited due to his hamstring, well, that will hurt our quick hit passing ame a bit.
