I’m pretty encouraged-

Sean : 9/14/2020 9:40 pm
The Steelers are an elite defense and arguable a Super Bowl contender. The Giants played tough. Not converting a TD after the muffed punt and the Jones red zone pick killed us.

But, this team was scrappy tonight & may have faced the toughest defense they’ll see all year.

Improvement is key in the next few weeks. But, it isn’t all bad.

defenae played well, gave up a couple of drives, game is different without those fluky ints..

There are some pieces on this team..

Offensive line held up passing, thomas looked pretty good

Low-ered expectaaaaations

Nearly a decade of horrendous roster and play have us grasping for any kind of positives year after year. We're still short about 2 or 3 offensive lineman (Hernandez is off scholarship after this year) which is just lovely with our high first round RB heading into his 3rd year.
This team continues to look like the worst
prdave73 : 9/14/2020 9:50 pm : link
Team every year. It’s bad.. We have seen teams completely rebuild and yet they do not look as awful as the Giants do. This team looks like they don’t even belong.. so embarrassing..

we have gotten used to watching awful football if we're pretty encouraged after this tonight.

There's a few positives, but not a whole lot.

Still one of the worst rosters in the sport. Barkley's talent is immense, but with the state of the roster most of his prime is going to be wasted away on a garbage team.
I said this after his rookie year. I loved the pick, but it only makes sense if you put together an OL. You can't rely on him to make 200 yards on his own every week. He will end up being wasted.
Well I'm not

I mean we got our asses kicked but two fluky turnovers. Gotta play better. Who knows. Just get better every week or month. Please.

They weren't fluky. The first was a great read by Watt, but it was a bad read and throw by Jones. Without Watt, that would still by a bad throw behind Engram.
And the second also wasn't fluky. Jones slowed to try to hit Slayton moving toward the corner. That pick is on him.
The Bad: It's still all about the OLine which was terrible tonight
Chris684 : 9/14/2020 9:53 pm : link
Barkley didn't have a chance and the pass pro got worse as the night went on.

I have been done with Evan Engram for 2 years so nothing new there.

The Good:

Jones has all the potential in the world.

Pass rush looked more active.

Logan Ryan will be a big help.
I agree
kennyd : 9/14/2020 9:53 pm : link
Plenty to build on. Yes, we have pieces missing but this is the best I've felt about a loss in a few years. Jones is very clearly the real deal, I liked the tempo, the preperation, etc. We have a way to go but considering the D we faced, all the changes, the youth, etc. I'm OK.

What was encouraging?
Matt M. : 9/14/2020 9:56 pm : link
Other than Jones and Slayton looking like last year was no fluke for the rookies, what looked good? I guess Peppers as a PR.

The OL still looks among the worst. The secondary looks bad. The pass rush is inconsistent. The couldn't come up with stops when they needed them. We got a gift on the muffed punt and settled for 3 when the ball started on the 3. We handed the ball back after a Peppers PR gave us excellent field position. We allowed the score before the half. We allowed the drive after the 2nd INT and then immediately gave the ball right back for another score.

This is the NFL. Not a MAC school traveling to Columbus, ohio.

They're down 16 points with 5 minutes to go.

If we're encouraged because they didn't get their doors blown off, then this fanbase has become so accustomed to losing they're just happy if there's a second half to watch.

Daniel Jones is the one promising part about this team. Maybe Slayton too. Not much else

Thomas played well, big deal for a rookie LT. Martinez had a really good game. Carter took a step. DL looks very good. We had a pass rush. The start of the 3rd quarter was a big difference from last year, getting the stop and moving the ball on the most methodical drive Ive seen in years. Special teams with a turnover and solid punt returns.

Its not a finished product, clearly. And hey, if you want to be miserable by all means, you're entitled. But there are positives if you want to acknowledge them.

Screw that! Competitive football without Ws sucks as bad as getting your butt whooped. It's early, but seeing signs of the last 3 or 4 years still showing up is not encouraging. Sloppy win over a competitive loss works for me all day, because that leads to meaningful games in December.

It's been a bad team for a long time and is still a bad team. I think you might even be able to make a solid argument tonight was the single worst run blocking the Giants offensive line has put forth in this terrible stretch. There's not much you can point to and say, well at least that seems to be improved. There's really not if we're to be honest.

You must not have watched them play. They may not have as dynamic a pass rushing group as Pitt, but that's only because Chase is a Rookie. Their interior line is stout and Ryan is a very good pass rusher. Chase showed signs that he's very much worthy of the #2 pick. Secondary is garbage, but that Line is good.

1. martinez and bradberry look like really solid adds. martinez is GREAT at POA

2. thomas looks so legit considering his first game against a stud front

3. the pass rush actually did okay, williams and d law looked awesome

4. slayton is an ABSOLUTE #1. I have no clue why people dont think the giants have a #1 WR. the guy does it all.

5. Jones looked good, he runs the offense well. throws a sharp ball with great accuracy. the redzone INT was his FIRST EVER and i think it was a result of him trying to make a play that wasnt there and throwing it away too late.

Tonight was telling for the fanbase here. Nearly *everyone* called this a 3 to 6 win team and said they wanted competitive football. Then they play a competitive but surely flawed game against a really good team and a lot of people are freaking the fuck out and claiming nothing has changed. When plenty surely fucking has.

People can say they have low expectations but a lot of them are full of shit. Im not saying you should like losing. But if you cant see past your disappointment and see the differences from last year until tonight you need to take a breath and step away from the tv for a minute.
I don't think Jones
pjcas18 : 9/14/2020 10:12 pm : link
had plenty of time most drop backs - just a handful he wasn't pressured.

He was sacked 3 times and hit 8 more.

11 times out of 41 drop backs and that doesn't include the hurries or plays Jones used his athleticism to avoid a sack and there was plenty of those.

Giants played with zero run game
nygiants16 : 9/14/2020 10:12 pm : link
And jones dropped back 41 times, sacked 3 times, threw for 280 2 tds 2 picks, against a ferocious pass rush..

it's the way it goes. Hell, Washington went from a doormat to having the most fearsome pass rush in NFL history in the span of 60 minutes.

mattnyg05 : 9/14/2020 10:19 pm : link
(Their front seven vs our o line) could have and should have made this game completely non competitive and we schemed around it to some degree.

I’m encouraged by that. Wouldn’t happen under the last two coaches especially after halftime. Need continuity to be better on the line. Give it a few Days and you’ll feel better about this performance if you’re one crying about it right now.
I liked what I saw...
Southern Man : 9/14/2020 10:27 pm : link
aside form what's already been mentioned they seemed pretty disciplined – 4 penalties for 25 yards (and one very questionable one) and the 2 INT's were the only turnovers. They were also all over loose balls – wished they'd gotten Claypool's, but I liked the effort. Obvious deficiencies in run blocking and secondary (Ballantine seemed to be picked-on). Would have loved to see more from the edge, but the middle looked good. It'll take some time, but this was kind of what I was looking for, but I'm hoping for a 6-8 win season this year.

But that said, they played Pitt tougher than I thought they would. OL did better than I thought it would, gotta figure they'll get better. Jones with a dumb mistake that really took us out of the game. Still, he showed signs. Just gotta keep improving.

One thing I'll complain about... Engram. This guy will never show up when it counts.

For me, the 2 biggest weaknesses the last couple of years (OL and secondary) continued to be weak links. The OL especially, looking every bit as bad as the last few years. That is hard to swallow, especially knowing Barkley's prime is being wasted.

It matters because constantly reading the same things are tiresome. Sure, I can ignore it but it isn’t insightful, brings nothing to the table.

So I guess keep repeating it?
I will put it this way
Matt M. : 9/14/2020 10:36 pm : link
I saw some positives. But, I didn't see enough to be encouraged that we will be more than a 5 win team again.

Yes, I want to see some competitive football and this game was for a half. Then Roethlisberger got into gear, drove for that TD before the half and then it started to unravel. Even that 90 yard drive...it was looking like a thing of beauty, with some adjustments made at halftime. Then Jones tries to make an ill advised throw and the D allows Pitt to drive most of the field for a FG. That felt like the game slipping away right there. Then they follow it up with another quick drive and allowing Roethlisberger to take them right down the field again for a TD to put it away.

This game felt like a ton of games over the last few years.

And, I am not blaming Jones or worried. I truly like what we have in him. I just saw enough today from the OL to be disappointed not just for tonight, but for what comes after.

All I will say in addition to all this, is with Peart active tonight, I take that as a promising sign. I would have Fleming on a short leash, because if this team is going to suck, then what do we lose by playing the rookie, who is likely to be our RT for a number of years?
I know if sounds weird
djm : 9/14/2020 10:49 pm : link
And i know I’m in the minority, but I can’t listen to people talk about the last ten years anymore. I don’t fucking care and neither should anyone else. None of these guys were here 4-6 years ago. DG has been here for 2 n change, heading into year 3. None of the players really have been here for over 3 save for a few. New coaching staff. New everything. Why focus on the past? This regime is about going forward they deserve that faith. Sick of the losing? I feel you, but it’s not worth focusing on the past.

There’s no moral victory but that doesn’t mean every loss is created equally. I’ve seen worse than tonight. I’m curious to see this team going forward. I think there could be some questions we really were unsure of that we see answered in a positive light this season.
