but there were a lot of things to be encouraged by if you were looking for them.
Lets see 2-3 more games before we really make strong judgements. Thought the offensive play calling was better than it’s been in a while. Defense mixed it up too. Jones looked like last year. Lots of promise but a few key mistakes. Barkley was a nonfactor and he’s need to give us more but the OLine did him zero favors.
If the OLine can’t dramatically improve by the end of the year then Gettleman has to go. It’s year 3 now.
to admit, even for BBI, I'm a bit taken aback by the vitriol being posted. Not sure what fans were expecting tonight. The prevailing opinion before the game seemed to be, "I'll be OK if they stay close for most of the game."
I'm always looking for the W. Moral Ws don't go too far in the NFL especially with so much turnover year to year. Heck we all expected Jax to be tanking for Trevor and they pulled off the W despite giving away much of their talent and going up against a playoff contender in Indy. This team needs to win games not just be competitive.
Garrett has to stop with the power running. This o-line isn't built for that. More inside zones and RPO's to keep defenses guessing. THe Steelers knew when we were going to run and blew up the plays almost everytime.
Thomas looked good against possibly the best DL in football. Slayton is going to be a great Giant. Interior OL needs to remember how to play football next week. Martinez good. Bradberry good. DL fairly good. Engram bad. Jones red zone killed any chance of us winning.
Andrew Thomas held up pretty well IMO. Jones needs to play a little less aggressively. Something has to be done about the run game. Jack Rabbit, we miss you.
And that's saying something thinking back to the last few years. It's difficult to imagine that could actually get worse.
The defense was meh. Good in spots, bad in others. Secondary miscommunication was not as bad as it's been in recent years. That's a step forward. Pass rush, much like it's been. Inconsistent at best, non-existent at worst.
Offense was better I guess than it's been. Seemed that way at least. Seemed like there was an actual plan, which is better than we've seen.
This team is in real troible, nothing really to root for which is damn shame
What were you expecting with three new starters, including a 1st time center, playing against the Steelers?
That's a great question. What was Gettleman expecting? I thought the O-Line was fixed? His job is on the line and he trots out a journeyman at RT and a converted T at C?
The overarching disappointing thing is the Giants drafted an all world running back, and by and large have been average to bad running team since.
The Giants just cannot run block. It’s the lineman, it’s the tight ends, it’s WRs, it’s the FB. It’s crazy. It’s pathetic. The Giants resort to misdirection pass plays on short yardage because they can’t run. It’s crazy.
People were literally telling me earlier today Barkley would be a disappointment if doesn’t have 2000 yards this year. He should line up at WR if he wants to eclipse 1000.
Need to work out the run blocking - its imperative
Frankly I think the OL has potential. They battled and were getting better. I thought Thomas and Hernandez got better as the game went on, Thomas will be out there for a long time. Gates had some problems vs the All Pro, and of course Dupree killed everyone in front of him.
Remember Pitts has All Pro's across the front 7. It was a really good lesson, and I think we will be much better next week
in pass protection, even going against Dupree. (Dupree's plays were when he was unblocked, or matched up on someone else.) We threw alot, when they knew we were throwing, and did Thomas even give up a pressure? The rest of the line may have sucked, but Thomas had a promising debut.
Talent just isn't there or just has to develop, especially on the OL. Better OL play = better Saquon. Daniel Jones did almost everything he could but he had a small margin for error and the one critical mistake on the goal line did the team in.
Defense did OK until they started to tire in the 2nd half. The only thing I really fault them for is giving up that 2 minute drive right before halftime.
Overall, nothing embarrassing TBH. We don't have the talent to compete at the higher levels yet
*Barkley has a long way to go. Once in a generation-type prospect - but must realize his potential in the NFL.
*Engram and Carter - the offseason heroes - were pretty much the same players they've shown to date. Which is what really should've been expected. Very little pressure off the edge.
*Jones' good will is going to run out soon. I was his biggest supporter pre-draft but he needs to show another level to his game, and quickly.
*Judge is physical, we like how he answers questions at press conferences, we like that he's young, but so far it was the same team. Shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and strange play calling. Couldn't cover the middle of the field, got worn out and exposed over a 60 minute football game.
*This was an easy game for the Steelers which is what we should all have hoped not to see. The Steelers have a far better roster than the Giants and would probably win 10 games out of 10. When they needed to do something, they did it. When they went for the kill, they killed. Their coaches, on both sides of the ball, seemed to have our number. Not a good start for Judge's staff.
This is quite possibly the most concerning to me tonight. That pick was so horrendously bad, and truly killed the chance for victory. You can't have that from your franchise QB. Especially coming off a good rookie year that was marred by turnovers.
I was pleased with AT in pass pro! The Dline looked like an improvement over last year.
to admit, even for BBI, I'm a bit taken aback by the vitriol being posted. Not sure what fans were expecting tonight. The prevailing opinion before the game seemed to be, "I'll be OK if they stay close for most of the game."
Agree Eric... the comments in the game thread tonight are proof that people are stupid

Barkley had 2,000 yards from scrimmage as a rookie two years ago.

Everyone said they just wanted to be competitive. And a lot of them were full of shit, because they were competitive and theyre whining like this is a predicted conference contender who came out flat.
to admit, even for BBI, I'm a bit taken aback by the vitriol being posted. Not sure what fans were expecting tonight. The prevailing opinion before the game seemed to be, "I'll be OK if they stay close for most of the game."
Failing to get a TD after the muffed punt and the redzone INT felt a lot like the last few years
Worst team in the entire NFL the last 3 years. I was encouraged by the D, DJ and DS. I expected the OL to get owned. I am not expecting much in the first 8 games. If the OL looks awful in the second half of the year you can complain. Until then, stop embarrassing yourself. I feel bad for some of you. It's OK to be upset we lost again...but for Pete's sake drop the sky is falling shit. Go out in the street and jerk off, it would be less humiliating for you.
saquan had those cool number 26 diamond earings on his ear on

It became an "easy" game in the 4th quarter. It was not an easy game for the Steelers. I don't think they expected it to be that hard.
Only caught 2nd half, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Last year I felt sick after watching our games. Defense looked pretty decent. The team competed the whole game. I am pretty much done with Engram and I wish Barkley could make some plays - he is going to have to help the oline until they can run block. Martinez looked pretty good as well!
Seeing some of these comments. This season is unlike any before plus a new staff and a young team. You can’t possibly make all these assumptions this early. If I told you we only lose by 10 points would you have believed me? Hell, I wouldn’t have believed me. I am bummed we lost, but against a probable playoff team I’m very content with how we played. Yes, the o-line needs to run block better. Couple silly mistakes by DJ like throwing that red zone INT but give credit to Dupree on that too. Evan Engram has a lot of work to do. We need to finish big drives. These are all things that can be corrected as the season goes on. Overall, I’m not discouraged at all and am actually really optimistic for the Bears next week.
Thinking the giants are bad. Not sure what they are yet, but they didn’t look bad. They made two mistakes that cost them at least 6 pts maybe more. They lost by 10. They were out played by a veteran, quality team.
Too soon to bust out the sweeping statements. My take is if the giants do suck this year, this game won’t be a big factor one way or the other. Saw some things that concern me but didn’t surprise me. Notably the OL struggling to be consistent. The D took some hits second half. But there were things to be encouraged with:
Pass blocking. Notably Thomas at LT.
Jones despite the mistakes puts the ball exactly where he wants.
Slayton is a star in the making.
Also encouraging was the front seven. Carter. Martinez. Lawrence.
Some guys appear to be emerging but the team has holes. Hopefully more questions are answered next week and beyond. Don’t lose faith just yet.
always overreact on game threads. I used to as well. Then they calm down and move on to the next game.
Thomas played very well. Gates was overwhelmed at times, but that was his first game at center at any level. Zeitler also looked overmatched. There were many missed assignments. Barkley couldn't run at all. The Steelers lived in our backfield. That was one of the best fronts we'll face all year.
We have some pieces.
This game was not on DG. A lot of his picks are playing well. Remember that we have the fewest wins of any team in the last three years.
1. Jones had some moments tonight, or had a number of moments where he looked like a burgeoning top qb. His pocket presence was noticeable better. The decision making is still coming along, and I cannot fault him for the first INT, that was a great play by Watt. The second INT was problematic, bit a simple throw away will take care of that. Overall impressed by a lot of aspects of Jones' game, and the pocket presence improvement is encouraging. Tweak the decision making and we may be looking at the best qb in the division by year's end.
2. Darius Slayton is turning into a star. Defenses will have to account for him and Jones.
3. Thomas seems to have held his own. We didn't hear his name called like we all became accustomed to with Flowers, etc.
4. The rest of the Oline is a complete mess and should be better in year 3 under DG. Maybe it will improve but not much that inspired confidence other than Thomas.
5. I just don't see the transcendent talent that has been touted on BBI with regard to Barkley. He is a very good player, but not impactful enough to justify his draft position and certainly not a cap choking extension. If you want to tell me that its the OL or the coaching or schemes, fine, but these are all reasons why you dont invest highly in a RB without other pieces in place. I see a bigger version of Reggie Bush, not Faulk or Barry Sanders. Change my mind.
6. Defense played hard but not enough impact players. Though Dexter Lawrence looked promising.
Every season since the Giants last superbowl run there has been a need to construct an OL. Every season there is failure and this years reason is new starters. Next years reason will be something else. Barkley is completed wasted in this offense primarily due to the line. The organization has failed to build a line. They are not getting the most from their decisions in this area (coaching, scheme, talent, etc). If it were once in a while we could say it is normal that all franchises face bad lines. The Giants wishfully think when constructing the line. What doesn't help is blitz pick up problems by the star RB and consistent confusion on the line. No vitriol or wishful thinking here. Just poor OL for 9 seasons running.
What were you expecting with three new starters, including a 1st time center, playing against the Steelers?

We lost. This team looks a lot better though.
OLine - wonder how Gates played. Steelers have one of better front 7s in the league and they've been together a while
The Steelers defense lived in our backfield every time Saquon touched the ball
This team can't afford field goals when you have a 1st and goal at the 3. Can't throw picks in the red zone.
Just not talented enough the blow opportunities.
The defense was meh. Good in spots, bad in others. Secondary miscommunication was not as bad as it's been in recent years. That's a step forward. Pass rush, much like it's been. Inconsistent at best, non-existent at worst.

The team played hard to the end, which was nice to see.
OLine - wonder how Gates played. Steelers have one of better front 7s in the league and they've been together a while
He whiffed on a couple blocks from what I saw. Definitely struggled against their nose tackle Tyson Alualu.
Defense did OK until they started to tire in the 2nd half. The only thing I really fault them for is giving up that 2 minute drive right before halftime.

OLBs seemed to disappear at times. Didn’t see much from any of them.
