Daniel Jones

Danny Kanell : 9/14/2020 10:26 pm
What an awful decision. Absolutely unbelievably bad.

Now that I got that out of the way, we have our franchise QB. He stood in with no running game and Dupree abusing the line and made some unbelievable throws and plays.

He has balls and he has all the tools. I love this fucking kid.

Agree

to agree, but his desire to make a TD on every play reminds me of Eli. Some plays are dead. Live for another play. There's a time to try for a big play, and a time to manage the game.
Agree, he made a stupid stupid mistake
sb from NYT Forum : 9/14/2020 10:29 pm : link
...and he's gotta start getting a better feel for the speed of the game.

But there were WAY more positives than negatives with him tonight.

Shit, Eli made bone-headed throws like that in Year 10.

Right now I'd like to see our OL play a little better so that Saquon can stop playing like the highest drafted 3rd down back ever.
Dude
BleedBlue : 9/14/2020 10:29 pm : link
Why?

It wasnt a decision.

He was trying to throw away and arm got hit. It hapens he is young

Why the fuck are we still talking about this. Jones is the goods. Get over your hate for DG
Hopefully
MookGiants : 9/14/2020 10:29 pm : link
we can build the rest of the team around him and not ruin him with a shit roster for a while.

He's got the chance to be a very good QB for a long time if management gets their heads out of their ass
Wow
Everyone Relax : 9/14/2020 10:29 pm : link
A reasonable take on Jones! Yes the int was awful, but let’s not forget that drive started with him throwing a dart on 3rd and 13 while standing in his own endzone. If that drive even ended with a FG we would be talking about how DJ single handedly kept us in the game
Saw a lot more that I like than I didn’t.
LBH15 : 9/14/2020 10:29 pm : link
Awful decision on the 19th play but not for lack of effort.

Let him keep playing.
That pick was killer
Ned In Atlanta : 9/14/2020 10:30 pm : link
I still love this guy. The fact that the line play was so bad that Saquon was essentially a net negative tells you all you need to know about the talent that was put around him. This is the tab we’re stuck with for rebuilding around Eli for 2-3 years too long
I think some of you missed the sarcasm in original post
ShocknAwe80 : 9/14/2020 10:30 pm : link
I agree! We got our guy... very impressed with a lot that I saw tonight.

He was great on that long drive pretty much willing them down the field. It ended badly but he did show a lot during that drive.
He’s a tremendous talent
lax counsel : 9/14/2020 10:33 pm : link
And I am impressed by his increase in pocket awareness. I wasn’t sure he had that in him or that it could be taught. But it was noticeably better.
The drive which ended in a red zone pick..
Sean : 9/14/2020 10:34 pm : link
Was the best drive I’ve seen in years from this team. Impressive 3rd down conversions. A shame the drive ended like it did.
He’s a playa
BillT : 9/14/2020 10:34 pm : link
He’s as good if not better than any of the QB taken in the past few years Mahomes excepted.

He can do a million great things and loose the game from one mistake. The problem is that he makes the mistakes at the most critical times and therefore looses the game. Two interceptions at the most critical times. VERY BIG mistakes. It’s not a mistake that you can live with. What can we do with taking us down the field with 1000 completions? Again, there are mistakes at the worst times.
His arm looks stronger than last year
nygiants16 : 9/14/2020 10:36 pm : link
he was throwing bullets into small windows, throwing outside thr numbers..

The throw on the deep ball to slayton was not lobbed, he threw that on a rope
Zero running game and zero
Kevin(formerly Tiki4Six) : 9/14/2020 10:37 pm : link
Pass blocking. He was trying to throw it away , Dupree made a spectacular play diving at his arm.
He looked really good tonight
Metnut : 9/14/2020 10:37 pm : link
aside from the back braking momentum changing turnovers.

I saw just as bad from Eli when he was in his first few years. Still remains to be seen whether Jones can clean it up, but im looking forward to seeing how he develops the rest of the year.

Garrett’s play calling was a breath of fresh air. Huge improvement from Mcadoo and Schurmer.
I hated that call
Spyder : 9/14/2020 10:38 pm : link
before the pick, if we are going to roll out with Daniel, let's roll the right side so he does not have to throw across his body. I am sure they thought they would block up Dupree somehow, but that was a mystery this team could not solve all night.

So that play is one on Garrett, but otherwise, both he and Garrett had pretty good games. Considering the OL still cannot keep the DL out of the backfield on running plays, I think Jones is coming along nicely.
He got his arm hit on the int
Phil in LA : 9/14/2020 10:40 pm : link
that's why it floated. Should have just kept running, but he didn't hit his own arm, Dupree did.
I'm not sure if I was just seeing things I wanted to see
Ben in Tampa : 9/14/2020 10:40 pm : link
but I thought he looked like he had more pocket awareness and was protecting the ball better when he felt pressure.

No one laid a hand on him. Which was weird as two guys went right by him.
Both picks were bad decisions
Matt M. : 9/14/2020 10:41 pm : link
and the first was also a bad read. But, he definitely has more positives than negatives and we do have our QB for a number of years. It's about time we got a real OL in front of him and Barkley.
Ya know
GiantEgo : 9/14/2020 10:41 pm : link
Sometimes players on the opposing team make really good plays.

I don't think having your arm hit as you throw is a "mistake"
Dupree took advantage
Simms11 : 9/14/2020 11:05 pm : link

Carl in CT : 9/14/2020 11:10 pm : link
Kid was awesome! Look how many plays he made like 3rd and 14 from own 5. He was our leading rusher and passed for 280 yds against the best D in NFL with the worst OL I can remember. Can he do it all? He was our best player by far. How about blocking? , running? Etc. if you ranked 1-50 what are problem is he is probably 49 or 50. People need to understand football. No time, no running game, it was all him. Come on DG get a fucking line!
And First Pick was
Carl in CT : 9/14/2020 11:11 pm : link
A great play by a great player not a bad decision.
Jones has to..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/14/2020 11:12 pm : link
realize that attempting to throw in that spot is bad. He needed to either continue to run towards the sideline or throw the ball away. Even if his arm wasn't hit, there wasn't anyone open.

I like the gunslinger mentality, but even if we get 3 points there, we're still in the game.
A franchise QB
Josh in the City : 9/14/2020 11:15 pm : link
Is a QB who wins games, not one who looks good 90% of the time then blows the game on bone headed decisions. Now that I got that out of the way, I’m very encouraged by what I saw from him tonight. But if he doesn’t get rid of game altering turnovers then he’ll never be a franchise anything.
It'd be interesting to hear Garrett's reasoning on the INT.
CT Charlie : 9/14/2020 11:16 pm : link
I think he deliberately sent Jones left because he thought Dupree would come flying in at a shallow angle, and Jones would have 2-3 seconds before Dupree changed direction. Instead, Dupree reacted fast and closed on Jones quickly.

Then Jones, who should have run OB left (losing 3-4 yards) or downed it by throwing at the ground or OB left, tried to throw it out of the endzone. With a great effort, Dupree got his fingers on it, and that was the ballgame.
The issue with the second pick
widmerseyebrow : 9/14/2020 11:18 pm : link
is my biggest knock on him thus far: he seems to have little feel for the rush. The decision to throw it away was fine. But he had just put a small move on Dupree and he crossed his field of vision. Jones absolutely knew he was there but his inner clock, sixth sense, whatever you want to call it, was a second behind reality. It's what lead to many of his fumbles last year.

I'm optimistic that he can correct it. His mastery of the offense is on par with Eli's at this point in his career and he is ahead on accuracy.
Based on what?
HomerJones45 : 9/14/2020 11:20 pm : link
the 2 picks? The boneheaded decision in the red zone? the under 7 yards per attempt? The lack of any points between the beginning of the second quarter and the two minute warning in the second half? He was mediocre.
Disappointing, but at least somewhat encouraging at the same time.
Dave in Hoboken : 9/14/2020 11:20 pm : link
If they played this exact game against a bad or average team, I'd be more worried. But this is one of the best teams in the league, and we played them tough the majority of the game. If this was last year's team, or any year over the past several years, this game probably would have been over much earlier in the game.

That being said, the OL played an absolutely terrible game from a run-block standpoint. Barkley is one of the best RBs in the game, and while the Pitt DLine is excellent, if a RB at Barkley's level finishes the game with negative yardage, that's inexcusable to me. Pitt has a great defense, but it's not the '85 Bears, either.

Jones has to throw that 2nd pick away, but at least he didn't fumble tonight. Seems like he's improved that aspect of his game, at least.

Good post. And I agree.

See, you can type about football without calling everybody a moron. Keep it up.
He was very impressive tonight given...
BillKo : 9/14/2020 11:45 pm : link
...the pressure he faced, and total lack of a running game.

He really stood in there nicely in some 3rd down throws.

And I think his arm looked like it has some more heat on it.

The interceptions are going to happen, he's played 13 games total to this point?

That's a veteran defensive team with little to no change from last year.

DJ played pretty well in a new system IMO.
Needs work on when to give up on a play.
St. Jimmy : 9/14/2020 11:47 pm : link
The second interception should have been in the stands well before it happened. The first one, probably should have been thrown away too. The receiver was being mugged when it was thrown.

He did get drilled a number of times and held onto the ball. That was a positive.
The positive is he learned from the horrid Int
PatersonPlank : 9/14/2020 11:53 pm : link
Two times later in the game he just threw the ball away quickly. Maybe he learned his lesson

I think he simply wasn't aware that a defender was close enough to him to disrupt the throw. And if that is the case, that's gotta change.

Hell, even just taking the sack would have been a smart decision there.
I also don't think DJ was throwing it away...

Just a bad play from the start, including the play call and the execution from Jones.

If Danny Dimes turns out to be Tony Romo 2.0, would you guys be happy? Let me preface everything by saying I think Jones is the least of our problems right now. But he might be that guy who looks brilliant most of the game, and then commits a boneheaded play at the most inopportune moment. Just saying...

Very impressed with Jones last night. Much stronger drive on the balls outside of the numbers. That was your major concern with Jones from last year. Significant improvement in game 1.

redwhiteandbigblue : 9/15/2020 6:25 am : link
a young Eli. Impressive downfield throws, tall in the pocket, tough, etc. Makes similar head scratching decisions from time to time. Just like Eli did his entire career. And has a similar demeanor and touch of class. I agree, I like this kid. I will take an Eli clone for the next 10-12 years gladly. Now surround him with an OL and get him some REAL weapons.
Jones has all the tools..

I’d like to see this offense hit on all cylinders at some point and score 30+ points though. Dating back to last year, this offense does not score enough.

had three seconds to throw that ball into the stands before his arm was hit. He needs to make that decision quickly. That's mental, and that's what a starting NFL quarterback needs to do.
