From my untrained eye Nick Gates and Cam Fleming had really tough nights in pass and run blocking. I thought Thomas was OK. Anyone want to chime on and give more detailed analysis.
Had a brand new line against a top tier Steelers front. Gates struggled a lot but remember he is new to the position and again, faced a tough group. Fleming is there until they're prepared to play Peart.
Thomas for his first game vs a stud front with covid and no preseason....was great
His pass sets are quick and didnt overextend as OTs tend to due vs speed.
He had good bend and did a great job holding the edge. Not sure how many pressures he gave up but solder gives up at least 3 sacks tonight. Flowers 4 or 5.
We saw him against a great front and he didnt stick out as strugglong.
Cam did a little and gates had one really bad play. The OL is a sum of parts so takes some time for them.to gel....this unit will improve with time.
last year watching the Giants I was amazed that a RB (Barkley) with so much talent could be hit so often in the backfield before even having a chance to get started.
This year (through 1 week) it is somehow worse.
I thought Thomas was an upgrade over Solder, but holy shit Fleming and Gates were brutal. Hernandez wasn't great either.
Sure, the Steelers have a good D, but I don't think they're '85 Bears/'86 Giants good.
At times with the hand fighting inside, he overextended and reached a lot when he really needs to get set and anchor first. He improved as the game went on, as did Fleming but I would be shocked if Peart isn't given a look by mid season at RT. Pittsburgh ran a lot of games up front and it worked as expected against an inexperienced group. Thomas was much much better than I anticipated, he looks like the goods at LT.
Thomas and Hernandez looked solid, especially after a scheme change in the 2nd half to handle Dupree. Thomas is going to be here for a long time.
Gates had a tough nite, but then again its his first game at C and he's against an All-Pro.
Zeitler and Fleming were just ok. Better than Gates but not good enough.
A big issue was the blocking of the TE's and RB's. Its not always the OL players. Lots of times Femling had 2 rushers, so of course one gets by. What is supposed to happen is the RB (or TE) is supposed to take to 2nd rusher. People on the game thread were yelling at Fleming, but he can't block 2 rushers. I saw both Gallman and Barkley miss blitzers after Fleming did the right thing and pick up the guy he was supposed to.
Blown blocks all over the place by everyone, including the TE's and RB's. Everyone taking turns misfiring randomly.
RB getting hit 5 yards deep in the backfield with regularity.
I am not an OL Coach and I don't have the foggiest clue what's wrong but they continue to be the worst run blocking OL I've ever seen. It doesn't look like anybody gets a push.
Better than Solder. The other 4 looked bad. I would really have Fleming on a short leash. If this season starts unraveling early, we have nothing to lose playing Peart over him. The same goes for Lemieux over Hernandez, who seems to have turned his rookie campaign into a fluke.
Played well when he was one on one in pass protection. Nick Gates had a horrible game and from what I could see a lot of the breakdowns where Barkley was getting hit in the backfield were due to Gates. The tight ends didn’t help the cause either. Engram still can’t block at all and putting him in a position where he has to block a good defender isn’t smart.

The tight ends didn’t help the o line at all with their effort.
If you thought the OL was going to perform well last night you were sadly mistaken and only have yourself to blame for the disappointment. Give it 4 games.. It'll take at least that for this new unit to build sustained continuity.
Especially for his first game and having to play t at LT. Everyone else stunk. Especially Gates. I don’t blame him though. He has no business being the starting center.

Yep, as bad as the line looked last night we have to remember that they’ve got three new starters in a new system without the benefit of the normal OTAs and preseason games. My hope is that a lot the breakdowns are due to lack of reps and communication and will get better in time.
Zeitler - to me you could tell he was the G called on to look to help the C. Problem is Fleming on the other side of him did him no favors. Fleming is good to have as a swing T. Agree we may see Peart sooner rather than later
I honestly still don’t know what they have in Hernandez. Would like to think they have the left side long term but just don’t know

Later he missed a trap block that resulted in Jones getting crushed.
He's a vet and shouldn't have that happen.
Gates looked as bad as Halapio, unfortunately.
Oh and what’s the strategy on not blocking Bud Dupree if we run the opposite way? I would rethink that.
And Fleming is a backup even though the beats liked him this summer.

It's amazing how Zietler goes from being Pro Bowl player to average Joe when he comes to the Giants??? hmmm...

They had some nice pass blocking plays but overall they got butchered in the run game turning Saquon Barkley into a rag picker.

Agree. You can’t run if the OL can't run block.

It is 1 game thus far in 2020
