My Thoughts - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Daniel in MI : 9/14/2020 10:59 pm
THE GOOD
- Jones did more good than bad in a tough situation (as usual)
- 19 play drive vs that D is something pretty good
- Good adjustment to go 3 TEs on that long drive
- Slayton is for real, picking up where he left off
- Williams finished a sack!
- Martinez is what you think - solid
- Shep is a tough SOB making catches in traffic
- Our rookie LT didn't look like he didn't belong with the bullets flying for real. Some rough moments and lots of help, but ok.
- No DJ fumbles
- Joe Judge had a team that was outmatched, but I don't think stupid/sloppy. I thought we'd be uglier in the beginning.

THE BAD
- D wore down
- Not capitalizing at the 3
- They keyed on Saquon like he's our best guy! Oh, yeah, he is.
- DJ INT on The Drive was bad. Throw it at his feet like the classic Eli give up play. Now we see why Eli did that. This is part of the painful learning process.
- Our pass blocking was up and down. Too much down.
- We started well, but talent won out over the course of the game
-Carter flashes. Seems to be what he does. I didn't see a huge step forward. We'll see how this develops, or if.

THE UGLY
- Engram just looks like a coach killer to me. All the tantalizing ability, but just never puts it together consistently. A few great plays sprinkled with some crap. He either needs to put it together fast, or we need to cut bait. Last year to prove it, EE. Kaden Smith was more productive...
- The run blocking was just atrocious. Jail break every play. WTF. (Note to coaches, you might want to block Dupree and cover Juju. But that's just my opinion, man.)

THE PERSPECTIVE
- Its generally thought you improve most from 1st game to 2nd, let's hope. Now we have some actual tape in an actual game.
- This was a brutal match up for us. We're in flux, they're stable as a slab of granite. We're putting a line together, they're a top, loaded D.
- I think we have to keep reminding ourselves, this is not a good team. We still have a lot of needs. We have a brutal early schedule that will be painful, but pay dividends we hope in the trial by fire making guys improve faster.
- The key to this season, IMO, is progress. I'm hoping for 6-8 wins and signs of moving in the right direction, and that JJ and crew know what they're doing.

Thoughts?
I don't think Carter was a bad

More like a meh. He did have some flashes and he looked better than he did the last couple of years. I hope he builds on it.

Engram and Ballentine.

Andrew Thomas seemed

to handle his position very well. Dupree did not really do much against him straight up. I think we have a LT.

That's the thing. It's been flashes from him. He flashes. I want to see him pick it up now so the flashes become consistent good play.

Oh yeah. Ballentine was a big ugly.

True on Ballentine. I guess I expected it, but he was pretty bad.

Pass Blocking
dairborn : 9/14/2020 11:06 pm : link
I felt was more up then down....its not going to be perfect, Jones just needs to make a better choice in the red zone there...your beat man....you got one more play and 3 points at stake there, plus 19 plays, to end up with that....I don't care what team you play for, but that is morally deflating...
The first INT was just a good play by WATT!

They came out ready to play...That was encouraging! I didn't feel like we were out coached and I feel the glass for once is half full!
Jones'

interception was a lot like that horrible interception thrown by Eli years ago against the Eagles that was returned for a touchdown.
We have a short week and a road trip to Chicago, right?
SGMen : 9/14/2020 11:07 pm : link
Chicago came back on Sunday.

I still see us playing them tough but losing a close one as the team continues to "learn on the job" and so forth.

RE: Jones'
Daniel in MI : 9/14/2020 11:13 pm : link
The first pick was IMO a hell of a play by Watt. I mean, I don't think Jones ever saw him, and to jump and catch that pass? SMH.

The second one, yeah. It looked like a lot of dumb plays we've seen. I appreciate guys that want to win, and don't give up on plays. Eli never protected his stats, but not giving up on plays makes for some good, and some ugly. Discretion v valor is a balance he'll need to learn.

Chicago was badly outplayed by a not great Detroit team
BigBlueNH : 9/14/2020 11:15 pm : link
for 3 Qs. I think Pittsburgh is a superior team. If we avoid/limit turnovers, I like our chances alot better against da Bears.
I Think Chicago Is Very Beatable
Trainmaster : 9/14/2020 11:28 pm : link
I watched their game versus the Lions. The Bears were not impressive ans very lucky to win. Our best chance for a win in the first 5 games.
Carter
jtfuoco : 9/14/2020 11:38 pm : link
Is just another JAG every year we hear how good he looks in camp but as soon as the real bullets start firing he looks like he barely belongs. However, overall the pass rush looked decent especially since PITs O-line is not bad for the most part

Carter played well I thought

and extremely please with Thomas at LT. He handled Dupree solo quite well. Jones made some great throws but still holds the ball too long. Engram needs to be released. Every time the ball goes his way something bad happens. Backwards Barkley is exactly the wrong RB for this team. He is a college RB. He stops EVERY time the ball is handed to him and takes losses. He never runs hard to the hole. The blocking was bad but if he ever ran hard he would not take losses. He tiptoes to the line and it is 3rd and 14 all night. Also think Judge did not have his DB's ready to play. Not knowing how to switch when WR's cross is on him. Gotta do better. This is still not a good team but I saw some improvement.
that INT was a nut punch - no doubt
LG in NYC : 9/15/2020 8:14 am : link
but people seem to overlook that the same aggressive, downfield mentality that caused the INT is what got us to that spot in the first place.

That 19 play drive was a thing of beauty. DJ was athletic, fearless and accurate throughout.

if he was more "careful", we would have punted 7-8 plays earlier in the drive.

I get it, the INT wipes all of that out (at least for most people) but Personally I do not want that aggressiveness to change.

I thought Carter looked better last night than he ever has here. that's not saying VERY much, but it's a start.

Carter last night:
djm : 9/15/2020 10:22 am : link
7 total tackles, 4 of them solo. One QB hit and at least one of those tackles was at the line of scrimmage. He also should have gotten a sack but slipped off big Ben allowing Dex to wrap him up. That may have been the QB hit but I don't think so.

Carter was not bad last night.

I agree. Love the aggressiveness. I want more actually. However, I want it also to be tempered by smarts. Jones needs to know when throwing it away sooner is the smart play. It is better to win the war than a single battle. I felt on that play, he held onto the ball just a split second too long. I'm confident he will get it eventually, and finishing positively will be the common outcome going forward.
Some opening day out there, the Giants will win.

Early season losses are magnified in a season that could easily be cut short due to CoVid.
MadPlaid
LG in NYC : 9/15/2020 12:54 pm : link
yes, agree
but for that split second differential we could have had a very different outcome, or at least perception of last night's performance.

but that is causing more than few people here to talk about DJ being 'mediocre', talking about getting Trevor Lawrence already (granted most of it is form people on the game thread who I have never heard of before).

Only my opinion, but I am a big fan of what I watched last night - especially after the overall good season he had last season.

and I didn't like the pick!

Was far from bad, he was actually holding the POA better than he ever has and he played with a mean streak. I think he's on his way.

Exactly. He also had 3 pressures. He was in on quite a few plays.

by the way, I was pissed last night when the announcers didn't even discuss the great play DLaw made on an inside screen where he not only diagnosed it, but kept it to no gain, even though if he doesn't do that, it goes for a long gain.
