Smith should pass engram on the depth chart

Thomas is a stud

Gates isn’t an nfl center. No balance no play strength.

D line is lights out.

Badly need an edge rusher who can win 1 vs 1 battles.

Interior OL looks like horseshit still
The_Boss : 9/15/2020 7:47 am : link
CB talent might be the worst in the league. They’ll play hard but I don’t see many matchups on the schedule where they’ll possess the better roster. Sticking to my prediction: a competitive 4-12 and Dave finally gets the termination he’s earned over these last 3 years...

take:

They played hard and their tackling was a lot better than what we've seen the last few years. But we beat ourselves with mistakes like Jones's second INT, and not getting a TD after the Steelers muffed the punt inside their five yard line. That's what young teams frequently do.

There were a lot of missed assignments, especially on the OL, which isn't surprising given the lack of experience and almost no offseason.

It's far too early to make any judgments about Gates or Ballentine. Gates was playing his first game at center at any level, and doing so against one of the best defensive fronts in the league. Ballentine is back playing his natural boundary position for the first time in two years.

We ran Barkley too much on first down. The Steelers were using a lot of run blitzes to force us into second and third and long.

Engram's drops and blocking were a problem, but his speed means he isn't going anywhere.

Jones is a gamer with a lot of talent, but like Eli get frustrated when the team isn't succeeding, and is therefore prone to try and do too much on some plays. He made some fantastic throws, including both TDs to Slayton. It looked to me like the Steelers frequently dropped a lot of players into coverage which made his throwing windows even tighter than normal.

We're still missing someone who can really bend the edge on defense as a pass rusher.

Martinez was all over the field.

Peppers had some good punt returns.

We stuffed the run very well. Lawrence had a great game.

Thomas played very well.
Overall some positives
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/15/2020 8:17 am : link
The D line played strong against the run. Had some interior rush. There is some talent on D.

The O line was horrible in run blocking. Thought Thomas showed he belongs. Garrett's first time calling plays in years. Look forward to seeing the adjustments he makes have a better idea of strengths and limitations.

Jones interception at goal line really changed the momentum of the game.
Martinez is the clear leader of this defense.
Beezer : 9/15/2020 8:19 am : link

Saquon will be fine, OL improvement or not.

I rarely get things right as far as spotting a player early on, but I feel strongly that my excitement over Smith was warranted. Under other coaches I might be concerned that Engram would take snaps from Smith, but I think Judge is a guy who will reward productivity, and certainly not have a long leash for gaffes.

I thought ST were solid. Always good to see. Peppers is going to break a couple this season.

Slayton is the real deal.

Looking forward to (maybe that's not the right way to say it) seeing some "expert" O-line analysis, replays, isolation, etc. Too many BBIers watching in real time getting excited, one way or another, about things up front. Let's see it in slo-mo.

I thought the pressure on Ben was solid early. But it seems like watching other teams, other games, D-coordinators are dialing up stunts and blitzes and disguising the fuck out of this and that ... then on 3rd-and-long, we have a fucking 3- or 4-man rush that's easily stonewalled. If I had to be that angry old Giants fan yelling at clouds, THIS cloud would get a fair amount of my fist-shaking.

Daniel Jones. He's the yin and the yang. The sweet and the sour. He's Eli Manning with legs. I love the guy, and I'm very excited about his promise, but holy fucking hell on the goal-line INT. That. Cannot. Happen. But I hope (wanna say based on his brains, I know) he'll shore that shit up. And quick-like.
SLayton is a player
Joey from GlenCove : 9/15/2020 8:22 am : link
Saquon is such a poor pass blocker. It doesn’t seem like he’s improved.

Generally okay with the outcome. They team feels better.
Jones Will Continue to Improve and Lead
Jeffrey : 9/15/2020 8:22 am : link
Offensive line is a mess, with RT and C liabilities and both guards overrated by the fans and DG.

Martinez is a major upgrade at LB.

Slayton is going to be the best receiver this year.

Barkley will never be a generational talent on this team without blocking and needs to stop trying to hurdle or will not get through the season.

Engram should play out wide and give up trying to block.

Going to be a long season watching the secondary give up yardage. Peppers overrated in coverage.

Giant fans grossly overrating the Steelers in terms of justifying the play of the the team last night.
Martinez
JohnB : 9/15/2020 8:23 am : link
enjoyed watching a LB really getting into the mix all the time.
Teams with new coaches
Biteymax22 : 9/15/2020 8:30 am : link
and young players have a disadvantage in a year with no preseason games and a very odd offseason. That reflected last night as they struggled to finish drives. Other than that some good and some bad.

The Bad:
* Interior oline got murdered by the Steelers DTs.
* Engram played a horrible game.
* Jones still needs to sense defenders around him better.
* No 2nd outside corner.
* Outside of Slayton, none of our WRs were able to stretch the field

The Good:
* Despite the announcers constantly saying "poor Andrew Thomas drawing Dupree on game one" none of Dupree's plays came matched up against Thomas, Thomas handled him very, very well.
* No major miscues in the secondary, we had a couple a game last year.
* Even when not sacking Big Ben, the team seemed to be able to pressure him.
* Jones at times looked very good outside of the redzone and did not fumble in a couple situations where he would typically fumble
* Slayton is the real deal, picked up where he left off last year against a very good secondary

All in all this was a game I didn't think we would win because the Steelers are loaded on defense and have a very good offense. This team played competitive football last year with a 3rd string QB, returned most of their team back and got a hall of fame QB back from injury. They're just better than the Giants right now.

Though the Steelers did what I expected them to do, the Giants showed some signs this year won't look like the last 3/4. They're communicating better, they played as a team and the mental miscues were minimized. I'm okay saying "they're on the right track".
Daniel Jones no fumbles is huge for someone with 18 fumbles
Danny Dimes : 9/15/2020 8:30 am : link
Hes a learner, by next year if improves on his interceptions like he did with his fumbles plus a better OL and more experience with Garettes system he is ganna be a beast
Very concerned about the run blocking
Aaroninma : 9/15/2020 8:32 am : link
you dont see that kind of penetration all game like that.

Oddly, i think the pass pro was mostly excellent and exceeded expectations. Thomas has the goods.

Blake Martinez looks like the most complete LB we have had in years.

The QB is fine. The 2nd INT was a huge mistake, but he so clearly has the tools and makes some really special plays.

Ultimately, the team isnt good enough to squander opportunities like the muffed punt and the 19 play drive.
I was very impressed with
bigbluehoya : 9/15/2020 8:34 am : link
Martinez after not being excited at all about the signing.

I thought the DL looked OK.

OL - I thought Thomas held up nicely. Other than that, I see little reason not to jam Lemieux and Peart into the mix sooner than later.

Coaching seemed solid - nothing too earth shattering, but no timeouts burned on bad challenges or failures to get to the LOS in a timely manner. Liked some of the play design stuff from Garrett. I think they stuck with the run a little too much, but that's definitely the type of thing that the casual fan such as myself is apt to say carelessly without a real understanding of what the impact of abandoning it would have meant.

I would have liked to see them go with a few designed runs for Jones to add a dimension.

Special teams were good -- a handful of plus plays and nothing too negative...maybe a couple of returns given up that seemed like they could have gone a lot worse.

That RZ interception is going to haunt me all week. I think PIT was proving to be the stronger side as the game went on anyhow, but it would have been well within reach.

I'm done hearing about how good Engram could be. He's just a walking disappointment at this point.
The touchdown by James Washington bothered me.
NBGblue : 9/15/2020 8:36 am : link
Two NYG tacklers (Love and I think Bradberry?) have him dead to rights at the 2 or 3 yard line and he runs right through them to score the TD. That play looked a lot like the NYG of the last few years, just poor tackling.
Got manhandled for the most part on both sides of the LOS
Heisenberg : 9/15/2020 8:40 am : link
And the two terrible turnovers from Jones killed them. He can't be a winning QB until he cuts those mistakes. Coverage downfield was really spotty.

Thomas did look pretty decent in pass protection. No OL looked good in the run game. Abysmal.
The Steelers ran for 141 on the ground
The_Boss : 9/15/2020 8:44 am : link
I don’t understand how the front 7 can get “kudos” for their performance last night.
There were times
pjcas18 : 9/15/2020 8:49 am : link
in the secondary the Giants players were simply confused - the crossing routes were easy chunks of yards seemingly uncontested.

Its called context. The game got away from them in the second half and they were simply gassed. If you weren't impressed with the line in the first half before we turned the ball over and the game unravelled, then I don't know what to tell you.

The boxscore tells half the story.

The part that bugs me
Harvest Blend : 9/15/2020 9:06 am : link
is that the Giants left 11 points on the field. Not saying it would have been the difference despite the final tally but good teams don't do that.

Tells me that so far (emphasis on so far) it's same old, same old.

We need to figure out how to run the ball - this is the key
PatersonPlank : 9/15/2020 9:08 am : link
I don't know if its Gates, the OL, the TE (probably if EE is in), or what. All teams run blitz good running teams and the good running teams neutralize it. This will open everything up.

You don't think the Titans or the Panthers are getting run blitzed every play like the Giants?
_________
I am Ninja : 9/15/2020 9:08 am : link
They looked more competently run in a loss than they did in wins under the previous two HCs.
There were a good deal of positives and negatives
Mike from Ohio : 9/15/2020 9:09 am : link
Positives -

The defense played the run very well and tacking looked much more crisp. DTs were collapsing the pocket and the edges were generating pressure

Play calling was good out of the gates and it seemed to adjust to game situations. You can't completely abandon the run so I don't fault Garrett for staying with it to the extent he did.

Special teams felt like a plus. Good punt returns from Peppers and solid coverage all night.

Negatives -

While Jones generally played well, the int at the goal line was idiotic. He needs to play with what's there and stop playing hero ball. It was one mistake, but it changed the game significantly and it can't happen.

Barkley is still sub-par in blitz pickup. He's intelligent so it is not that he can't figure it out. He needs work there badly as it is a significant liability in his game.

Evan Engram. I have no doubt he will have a couple of explosive games this year, but he is just too unreliable game to game and play to play to ever be a real weapon.

that are supposed to be run stuffers, if they don’t stuff the run. Steeler oline missing starters and used backup running back to go well over 100 yards and at a good avg yard per carry.

Supposed strength of the team and results were bad.

I’m expecting a low scoring affair. I don’t expect Barkley to have another nightmare game like last night, but I can certainly see Chicago limiting him to 60-80 yards. Khalil Mack still has the ability to wreck a game. Gun to my head, do I think we win? Probably not. I can see a final of like 23-17.

People. 3 new starters, 1 new to the position, NO PRESEASON GAMES, less live practice than ever before vs one of best defenses in football on a veteran team that has had the same coach for a decade.

Can you really be as stupid as your posts make you appear to be? Take few weeks off from BBI, you are not intelligent enough to participate. The bar is very fucking low here. Chill out.

mikeinbloomfield : 9/15/2020 10:04 am : link
or he is the worst OL evaluator in the league. Because three years after promising to fix the OL, they started a converted RT at center and a castoff at RT. I get that they need time to gel, but I'd feel better if anybody on the line had a decent resume other than Thomas.

It's time to decide whether having Engram on this team makes sense when the best weapon they have is a running back. Every year we hear he's working on his blocking and every year it looks like its the last thing he wants to do.

The defense showed up early and looked gassed late. That might be the lack of preseaon games, but it also might be lack of depth, another issue Gettleman can't seem to fix.

A lot has to go right for this team to be competitive.

Claypool catch and non OPI call, and the Engram OPI call, were two huge moments in the game. We are up 10-3 and could have gotten off the field with good field position and may have gotten another score to at least go up 13-3. Then, the Engram OPI, it would have been 1st and 10 driving at the 25, instead it's 1st and 20 at our own 40. Just a brutal turn of events for both of these plays that changed the game completely.
