A lot of the things you see on the field I don’t want to overreact to emotionally. I want to watch the tape, clear it up and make sure I have all the information.
positives in the game. No one should find a loss acceptable, but it felt like a good first step. If there is steady improvement from here, they will be a pretty good team by season's end. (barring a ton of injuries)
Hi Dave,
I'm not sure how good they will be. It certainly is one game with a rookie HC, rookie LT, a player playing center who as far as I know has not played center before. Add to that all of the players are learning a new system in a year cut short for a team still needing talent.
To me a lot of fans had probably higher expectations for last night than was likely, myself included, because I was pretty disappointed. But my disappointment doesn't necessarily dictate reality.
We made young team mistakes, we could NOT BLOCK.
And we still had a chance to take the lead in the 4th quarter against a literally Top 2 defense.
LETS GO! That team fought their ars off and the D got worn out late. Come on now, see the positives in a young team.
Gates may have to move back to RT though, because they line can't miss that many assignments over and over, they need a C to lead them through the calls.
sit back and call the plays apriori but i called every run play. Barkley needs to be in motion or split in space. A play action on 1st down at the goal line would not take a rocket scientist either. Hey a jet sweep or fake off it. Peart can't be any worse than Fleming get him in there for experience
the defensive secondary still struggled, there were hardly any breakdowns in communication. That's a really good sign.
Agreed, with Baker screwing us and himself over and Beal opting out I thought it was going to be way worse in the secondary last night. McKinney will be out there at some point which will also help.

Im not ready to call an end to the Gates move to C just yet. If he had the advantage of OTA, 4 preseason games, etc...then maybe. But think about his situation: 1st game starting EVER at C...hell, im not even sure he had ever even played the position before in an NFL game..so first game starting at C...against the freaking Pittsburgh Steelers...on Monday Night Football! Ill admit I wish we had a legitimate NFL C (not named Pulley) that we could plug in while Gates adapts to the position, but we dont, so if they still see any potential at all in him, id like to see a few more games before ending the experiment, see if he gets better.
I’ve felt the keys to the season are 1) can the Giants defend the pass better 2) can the interior of the line run/pass block better.
Those two measurements are highly dependent on both coordination and the maturation of key young players.
If Gates and Hernandez develop into solid starters, the Giants offense will be fine. If Love, Ballentine, and Holmes develop into solid starters the Giants defense will be fine.
The rub is obviously you’re banking on the development of an UDFA, 6th round pick, 2 4th round picks, and a 2nd round pick. The odds they all pan out are pretty low.
Go into the evaluation process of a football team.
As a fan who knows zero about the evaluation process, I can only make semi educated guesses based on my experiencing only watching the game and based on what I consider logic and reasoning.
Here are a few that come to mind:
How much did my own team beat themselves?
How much did the other team beat themselves?
How many mistakes did my team get away with?
How many mistakes did my opponent get away with?
Did my players know their job?
Did my players execute their job?
What was the skill level of my opponent?
What players on my team and the opposing team are on a learning curve because of circumstance?
These are only a here, but to me should always be considered when trying to understand how a player and a team of players faired.
I always get emotional during or right after the loss. For some reason, I felt a weird calm come over me last night right as Pitt started pulling away. I don't know, maybe I am nuts, but I feel oddly comfortable with this franchise now and going forward. I see progress already. yea I am an optimistic fan, but I usually don't feel good after a loss, matter of fact I never do not since Coughlin's early days here.
I will die on this hill dammit. This team will be fine.
when he is ready to play (hopefully Sunday) and if McKinney can come back, we will have a more talented secondary than we had last night. But even then, Ballentine still appears to be the best option on the outside, and he needs to improve.
He is definitely a boundry CB and not a nickle corner. He looked better to me last night on the outside. Look it is going to take reps and games played to see what we have in Ballentine. Holmes is the better nickle CB for sure. He had a rough time last night on pick plays. He definitely will get better with reps and games under his belt.
I am not ready at all to give up on Ballentine.

took the toughts right from my head. I don't think Ryan played at all.
Just checked, he did play. 4 tackles, 2 of them solo.

Well said. One game is one game. But I feel a lot differently about the team now than the past few years. They are moving in the right direction. A couple bad turnovers don't happen and it's a different ballgame. They were competitive and in the game most of the evening against one of the better teams in the league. They appear to be moving in the right direction.

You had higher expectations than what they did last?
Well, there's your problem right there.
I think they'll continue to be a work in progress, but I'm much more confident that the progress will actually occur than I have been in the past.

I stated that higher expectations was the problem.

That's true. I had not thought of that.
