My fear is another start with snowballing losses

Sean : 9/15/2020 9:28 am
The Giants are 1-10 in season openers since 2010, being 0-1 is not that big of a deal, but puts pressure on week 2.

These are the recent Giant starts to the season:

2019: 2-6 after starting 0-2
2018: 1-7 after starting 0-2
2017: 1-7 after starting 0-5
2016: 5-3, the lone season opening win
2015: 4-4 after starting 0-2
2014: 3-5 after starting 0-2
2013: 2-6 after starting 0-6

0-1 is a very common occurrence for Giant fans unfortunately. Sadly, 0-2 is just as common. There is a lot of pressure to win the Bears game, this team cannot afford to be 0-2 staring down the Niners, Rams & Cowboys.

I support that this is a young team rebuilding, but even with that it should not mean a 1-7 or 2-6 start. It just kills the enthusiasm for the team when we can’t even make it to Columbus Day.

Here’s to hoping the Giants can finally buck the trend and get to 1-1.
Agreed, its not enough to just be in the game,
Jim in Forest Hills : 9/15/2020 9:30 am : link
they have to win some. We shouldn't simply expect 3 losses if we play 3 tough teams, thats what the constant losing does to you.

Plus I'm pretty sure there is a ton of pressure on DG to win this year, I think he's out if they have 5 wins or less.
If we don’t win Sunday, I’m not sure if we get one before
The_Boss : 9/15/2020 9:30 am : link
Columbus Day. That would be 0-5. Washington comes in on 10.18.
Simply put...

we gotta beat Chicago.
at this point
Dave on the UWS : 9/15/2020 9:35 am : link
they are likely to be underdogs in EVERY game this season. The Wash. team just beat the Eagles and the Cards beat SF. No game will be easy. That being said, as they improve, EVERY game is winnable.

I went into last night s game, thinking they had a chance. Totally agree with your point. I really think this is the year the get some of these unexpected wins.

Is a week to week proposition. I wouldn't look to far ahead, the Giants can win any of these games or lose them all. They didn't look terribly over matched last night, so it wouldn't be surprising to see them pull out some games that we all had penciled in for losses.

The NFCE also doesn't appear very imposing at this point. But this can all change in a hurry.
We were one of the worst teams in the league last year...

not sure why people think we are going to contend for a playoff spot this year. A whole new coaching staff with new schemes and you can only add so many quality players in one off season.

No one is saying contend for a playoff spot in this thread. But, it’s reasonable not to expect to go 1-7 to start the season.
Could we just play a few games before deciding we’re going 1-7
BillT : 9/15/2020 10:05 am : link
Good golly the projection here is endless. At 0-3 or 0-4 then tell me about 1-7. But after 1 game. Get a grip.
Schedule isn't doing us any favors but on the positive side
Eric on Li : 9/15/2020 10:06 am : link
Trubisky and Garapolo (without Deebo) the next 2 weeks will hopefully help the defense keep the positive momentum from yesterday's performance.

if Chicago holds Robert Quinn out again, it's a lot easier to give Mack and Hicks all the attention they deserve too.

Maybe you missed my original post. The recent history makes this a valid concern.
I do not understand what 2014, 2015 2016, 2017, 2018
George from PA : 9/15/2020 10:25 am : link
For that matter 2019....has to do with this team?

27 new players, all new coaches....

We could and should beat Chicago.

Lets beat Chicago.

This.

Calling Chicago a MUST win is a bit over the top.

But we fans so we look at the schedule.
Chicago is gettable

it is on the road but what are road games in empty stadiums, trubisky doesnt scare anyone..

Need a center, right tackle, and cornerback, and I am pissed at Gettleman for letting Cockrell out the door, Ballentine is not an NFL player, how stupid can you be to let that happen after his 2 cornerbacks are not playing this season, player opts out of the season when he is handed an opportunity to start. Gettleman had an opportunity to make that right, I am pissed over that, we needed a decent season, that is a position that killed us last year and now it is already killing us this year. Plus he did nothing at center, and look at the disaster there, he did not add a wideout with a ton of good ones available, so he has earned the hot seat this year, I hate to think about losing Blake and what that would do.

No, I didn't miss it and no recent history doesn't make this a valid concern. Recent history has little if anything to do with this year and this team.
I see 0-5 until our first win
MartyNJ1969 : 9/15/2020 12:54 pm : link
and then 3-13 rest of way. This team has all new players and alot of deficiencies on defense and the OL and that is not taking into account future injuries that will happen during the year. I would like to see Peart start eventually this season on OL
We don't have good players.
mittenedman : 9/15/2020 12:55 pm : link
It's going to be tough to win games this year regardless of the coaching.
Washington is at the genesis of having an awesome defense
MartyNJ1969 : 9/15/2020 12:56 pm : link
they are going to have a scary defense at week 4

Why? When you have a bad OLine, bad secondary, and no pass rush...every year will be a bad year. It's not rocket science unless your last name is Gettleman.

No one is saying contend for a playoff spot in this thread. But, it’s reasonable not to expect to go 1-7 to start the season.
Would anyone be surprised
cjac : 9/15/2020 4:13 pm : link
If the Giants start the season 0-5?

I’m really hoping for a win this Sunday. And maybe an upset here and there. But realistically how many wins do you see before we get Washington?
Honestly ...
FStubbs : 9/15/2020 4:55 pm : link
... right now Washington is a bad matchup for this team. Their defensive line might be the best in the NFL.

Chicago might be the best chance to win in the first 10 games unless this team shows dramatic improvement:

Upcoming opponents:

Bears
49ers
Rams
Dallas
WTF
Eagles
Bucs

Montgomery played this week and looked quite good. Nice combo with Cohen but Trubisky looks lost and his receiving is average outside of Robinson (who is totally under utilized
