a suggestion that might help; you have a tight end who can’t block..run or pass block...so don’t ask him to do it. Put someone else in that position.

From one of the best in the business of breaking down film. Ouch.
This is a recurring theme from Engram
SGMen : 9/15/2020 12:36 pm : link
Camp made me think that perhaps he finally improved from bottom tenth in the league as a blocker to hopefully close to middle of the pack and serviceable.

Apparently, it was a pipe dream. I think we need to employ Engram in spots as a receiver and let K. Smith start cause that guy can block and catch just enough to be useful. IMHO.
I
AcidTest : 9/15/2020 12:38 pm : link
think this is what we'll see going forward. We'd heard reports from camp that EE's blocking had improved. I know it's Pittsburgh, but my guess is that the EE blocking experiment is over. We are also weak at WR, which his speed at TE can help alleviate, especially in the seam or on shallow crossing routes where he has the chance to get some YAC.
I said this last year too.
mittenedman : 9/15/2020 12:39 pm : link
Coach killer.

He's absolutely killing this team with negative plays, and has been since he got here.

The big plays from a TE don't matter. You need a guy who consistently makes the small plays.

GiantEgo : 9/15/2020 12:39 pm : link
This is the second pre-season in a row where we heard how much Engram's blocking has improved. I think it's safe to assume at this point it isn't going to happen.

He has great physical tools but he just doesn't seem to be a football player.
Agree 100%
Rick in Dallas : 9/15/2020 12:39 pm : link
No surprise with that analysis. Split him out and take advantage of his size and speed.
My other big question about EE is his total concentration on each play.
I really hope we trade
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 9/15/2020 12:39 pm : link
this guy & get something for him. He was an absolute mess last night.

His blocking is humiliating. There is no improvement he can make at this point, that will change anything. He looks like a little kid trying to block grown men.
Judge mentioned a few times
GiantsRage2007 : 9/15/2020 12:59 pm : link
That it's his (and the coaches) job to put players in positions they can succeed. Not to ask players to do something that they CAN'T do but to capitalize on what they CAN do.

Let's see if they do that with EE.

I know its one game but it's been 3 years and 1 game of not being able to block.

Engram Is A TE
Trainmaster : 9/15/2020 1:25 pm : link
Yet wide receivers like Plaxico Buress (admittedly a very big WR), Amani Toomer (smaller than Engram) and even Sterling Shepard (much smaller than Engram) are much better blockers than Engram.

Engram as a WR would be a below average blocker. As a TE, he is terrible.

TE screen with Engram should be a no brainer
mattlawson : 9/15/2020 1:30 pm : link
In fact Barkley and EE running screens a the same time should be a thing if people are going to continue to bring the house. Fake one way go the other. EE is fast as hell in space.
Engram
stretch234 : 9/15/2020 1:32 pm : link
He is built like Jordan Reed. The Redskins never used Reed to try and block top end DL. They used him as a weapon because he created mismatches. Use Engram the same way. Maximize what he can do
Noticed too many Giant players putting their heads down
LBH15 : 9/15/2020 1:32 pm : link
when they engaged someone to block, and often the Steeler was able to sidestep them more easily because of it.

Engram, Barkley and Gates particularly.
This is nonsense

None of those guys blocked 10+ sack pass rushers as an inline blocker.

I have a lot of irrational confidence in Judge at this point. My general feeling is that if anyone can turn Engram into a functional, contributing football player, it's him -- and he will certainly try.

They literally ran this play last night. Jones threw the ball to Barkley..who dropped it. So either EE wasn't open or Jones had lost confidence in him by that point in the game.
Engram is a few sandwiches short of a picnic
ghost718 : 9/15/2020 1:53 pm : link
and I think they're way too patient with him
If you have him go out for routes 100% of the time
Mike from SI : 9/15/2020 1:54 pm : link
you're telegraphing your plays if you take him out on all running plays. He unfortunately needs to block every once in a while, he just sucks at it.
The new staff has actual game film
larryflower37 : 9/15/2020 1:58 pm : link
in the new system and can work to clean some of it up and put him in a better position to be successful.
The drops and poor route running are a bigger concern for me than the poor blocking
Make Hime the Big WR
Jeffrey : 9/15/2020 2:09 pm : link
that this team needs. Do not underestimate his value but learn how to use him so that he doesn't fail. Besides in the "cannot block" category you must include Barkley.
GiantEgo
arniefez : 9/15/2020 2:15 pm : link
You could say the same things about Barkley and you'd be correct twice
At this point
David B. : 9/15/2020 2:18 pm : link
I'm inclined to agree with Balldinger. Stop trying to make this happen with Engram as a blocker.

Use him like Denver used Shannon Sharpe. He couldn't block either and had a heck of a career.

I also agree he's on the verge of becoming a coach killer. He teases big and comes up small.

This is on the coaches to find a way to make him a weapon.
For a Head Coach that didn't give out a ton of compliments
LBH15 : 9/15/2020 2:23 pm : link
this summer to specifically named players, Judge did so with Evan Engram.

While very soured with his play, the Giants have got to figure out how to use him effectively, or just deal him. Clock is ticking.
Some

of this is on the Giants for constantly trying to make Engram do something he cannot do. As Judge said, "tell me what he can do, not what he can't." How they deal with Engram will tell us whether Judge meant what he said.

How can you not ask a TE to block? Did you listen to O'Hara last night after the game? He blamed the WRs for not blocking on running plays. Nobody is saying that Engram has to be Bavaro blocking Dexter Manley but the position does require blocking.

It just requires some vision. Play him like a WR. The same way Fassell made use of Shockey split out wide. I was against changing his position at first but it may be for the best.
You can teach technique....
BillKo : 9/15/2020 2:55 pm : link
...but you have to want to stick your nose in there to be a good blocker.

Dave Megget was taught technique, but he was one tough SOB on blitz pickup.

Engram is NEVER going to be a good blocker, ain't happening.

As PatersonPlank said on another thread, just move him outside and see if there's something you can salvage from this #1 draft pick to be an effective player.

He's not effective as a complete TE........and it's hurting this football team.

We will also find out about the coaching staff, and how long they stick with Engram.

Personally, I would have benched him for some time last night after that first and second series.

Yeah, it looks like his concentration, reaction time, and effort are all a little wanting.

Seconded. And if he doesn't progress over this season Engram is outta here.

Let guys fail a little bit. That's not what worries me, rather, I want to see some of these nitwits fail and see how this coaching staff and players respond.

Engram is running out of time, it is now or never.
He’s big enough to give a good chip block
Simms11 : 9/15/2020 4:02 pm : link
or block downfield for the receivers or RBs. He is just not an in-line blocker, and never has been. Put him in the slot and get him out into space. That’s where he’s most effective. He has to concentrate on catching the ball. Get the Juggs machine out and make him catch 100 balls each practice.
I've kinda given up on EE as a . . . .
TC : 9/15/2020 4:37 pm : link
core offensive difference maker, despite his gaudy measurables. Between injuries, inconsistencies and a woeful lack of physicality, I'm afraid he'll always be less than the sum of his parts.

The most exciting TE play last night for me was watching Smith trucking a DB, for what, 5 yards?
I would think
Mark from Jersey : 9/15/2020 8:03 pm : link
he is not on scholarship. DG didn't draft him and JJ doesnt seem like the type to put up with BS.

That being said, JJ has said himself (paraphrasing) tell me what a player can do not what he cant do.

Dear Joe - EE can't block.
how do we get duped every offseason?
Platos : 9/16/2020 11:22 am : link
guys always getting better at blocking but can't in a game for some reason lol
Smith is a better TE than Engram, right now.
Beezer : 9/16/2020 11:34 am : link

This might be the 3rd year I've said it (as others have ad nauseum) - Evan Engram came out of college with 4.4 speed. He's a fucking wide receiver.

Coach?

Yeh he runs a 4.4 but he doesn't have near the cutting ability to play WR. He uses his body pretty well, but it's meaningless because of his inconsistent hands. He's best used as a weapon in passing game as a TE, he's essentially a one trick pony at this point. He fools us because he's tremendous at running drag routes, maybe the most unique weapon in the league at that, but he's a one trick pony.
