Switching focus to Washington; Haskins was awful on Sunday

cosmicj : 9/15/2020 4:29 pm
I know Wentz received a lot of flak for lousiness on Sunday (deservedly so) but when watching the game I decided to focus on Dwayne Haskins. I came away thinking that right now he didn't have the mental skills to play the position - not even close. If Wash had even a replacement level QB, I think they would have beat the Eagles by 4-5 TDs (that's how bad Philly was). Haskins was hamstringing the rest of the team, which was playing well.

What I saw from Haskins was an utter inability to read defenses. In the first half, I didn't see a single completed pass that went beyond the first read to an open man. In fact, the first quality NFL pass I saw came late in the 3rd quarter on a nice 19 yard pass to Thomas on the Philly 19 (1:13 third quarter). Rivera was calling a lot of single read plays because those were the only ones Haskins was completing. When he had to go beyond the primary target, he was throwing into coverage and seemed to have no clue about whether the receivers he was targeting were open.

Another boneheaded play was his sliding at the Philly goal line on a key 3rd down in the 4th quarter. Washington converted the succeeding 4th down so it didn't affect the score but Haskins' slide was both gutless and stupid: he got nailed by 3 players AND didn't make the first down.

This was awful. I know he is young but Haskins didn't look even close to being a viable NFL QB. I'll make a prediction: Washington will be considering drafting a QB next spring.
2020 Skins

could be the 1997 Giants. Many similarities. Really good front seven, overall the D is terrific but the O leaves a lot to be desired. If you're a hopeful SKins fan you could shout me down with Haskins being a first round pick compared to Danny kannel at QB for the 97 Giants, but they also started Dave Brown that year.

Haskins was streaky on Sunday

He definitely started out terrible, but once Washington started building momentum, he got confident, and it showed in his play.
too early to tell
Giantsfan79 : 9/15/2020 4:43 pm : link
but Rivera had to get an IV treatment for his cancer during halftime on Sunday and apparently Haskins gave an impassioned speech to the team in Ron's place, then they win the second half.

Haskins looked serviceable.

Not a difference maker, but not terrible either.

Their defensive line though is monstrous.
I only watched a handful of plays

since I was watching the redzone channel, but yeah, definitely wasnt wowed.
Separately how did Lock look last night? I saw his TD, which you could argue was a dumb throw, but didnt see much else.
It wasn’t that Haskins didn’t complete any passes
cosmicj : 9/15/2020 5:39 pm : link
It was that almost all of his completions came on rudimentary one read to his primary receivers,

Same here, he would throw 3 ducks, and then make 3 nice throws
I can't tell what to make of Haskins.

He's played even less than Jones, never mind a full season.
And switching focus to Chicago
ArlingtonMike : 9/15/2020 7:51 pm : link
Trubisky was even worse. Inspires no confidence whatsoever

He was okay. He is good getting out of the pocket and making some plays, and of course he has a great arm. His accuracy is suspect and I think he is still developing his ability to read a defense. I think he also struggles somewhat from inside the pocket.

As of now I would say Jones is clearly the best of the 3 with the highest ceiling. He does things the other two cannot or haven't displayed the ability to yet.
Haskins is the best Ohio St alumni QB in NFL history
RetroJint : 9/15/2020 8:52 pm : link
Know what that means ? He’s going to be better than Mike Tomczak . Seriously he’s a guy who is going to need some time before he hits his stride . But he will be good . In the division not sure who will be eventually be regarded as the best QB. And I don’t think Haskins played poorly on Sun. He did what they asked of him .
Haskins..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/15/2020 8:57 pm : link
had wide open receivers all day. And yet he kept going short to the first read. And he still only ended up 17-31 for 170 yards.

If he was asked to not throw to open guys that likely would have produced 2 more TD's, Rivera should have examined the questions a little more closely

verdict on Haskins is still unknown. He didn't play much last year, and this unusual season is only one week old. But I agree he wasn't very accurate even when he completed passes, and it seemed as if he was constantly going to his first read. He also throws a lot of passes without stepping into them. I do think he's lost weight.
Haskins has never learned how to slide
Milton : 9/16/2020 5:44 am : link
One of the draftniks pointed it out when he was coming out of college. But I don't think the issue is just when he slides, I noticed that he just plain has trouble running. It's just a small sample I saw on Sunday, but he runs as if he is trying too hard to be faster than he actually is. The mind is ambitious, but the legs aren't cooperating. Or maybe it's just that he's out of shape and gets winded quickly thus affecting his balance.
Washington won the game. Haskins was serviceable. He improved.
Ivan15 : 9/16/2020 9:45 am : link
He still is inexperienced, may be physically flawed but could be successful like many others who had flaws.

As to why he went to his first read, maybe that was the guy who was open.

Then I'll take his lack of aptitude in hitting that open guy.

17-31 throwing 25 of those passes less than 10 yards.
if the Skins keep winning
djm : 9/16/2020 9:53 am : link
and Haskins doesn't show he's capable of enabling the team, would the Skins put Alex Smith back in? If he's truly healthy, I sure as fuck would.

So basically it's expected that he will then have a bounce-back game against us...yeeshhh.
I bust on Sweaty Haskins as much (if not more) than anybody
j_rud : 9/16/2020 10:08 am : link
but hes got some talent and, equally important, stability and good football minds around him with this new staff. I dont know what the ceiling is but I think he's gonna be alright.

open."

Let me clarify: Haskins was repeatedly throwing to covered receivers. When he was completing passes, it was almost always to first read receivers who were open. I was questioning his ability to read coverages and absorb events on the field.

Saying they won the game is lazy analysis. What I sad was it would have been a full on blow out if a healthy Alex Smith or someone else had been out there.
