Telling Barkley Rushing Stats

christian : 9/15/2020 9:16 pm
Normal disclosure - you can do some version of this with any player of course. Take away all of their good plays they don't look good. Take away all their bad plays they look great.

What struck me last night is 7 negative rushes on 15 carries, and got me curious how frequently that's really happened. And then of course how many huge plays he's had as well.

In 30 career games, he has 493 carries for 2316 yards 4.7 YPC, 15 TDs.

Carries Over 20+ YDs
- 22 carries of 20+ YDs, 5 TDs
- Accounts for 868 or 37.5% of career rush yards
- Subtract those out, his career YPC is 3.07 for 1448 YDs

Career Carries Under 0 Yards
- 108 carries for & lt; 0 yards for a total of -194 yards
- 22% of all carries
- Subtract those out, his career YPC is 6.5 on 2510 yards

I'm struck by that & lt; 0 number. You just absolutely have to can't let a guy with his breakaway ability get bottled up behind the line 1/5 of the time.
It really is a crime how long this OL is taking

I never expected great all these years, just wanted adequate. He’s a special player, just needs a shred of daylight to succeed, hopefully that happens as the season progresses.
The back..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/15/2020 9:22 pm : link
with over 2,500 yards with the highest percentage of negative runs is Barry Sanders.

18% of his carries. Barkley looks like he's ahead of that pace, but it is pretty damn good company to be with
Barkley caught a bad break coming to this team and this OL
SGMen : 9/15/2020 9:22 pm : link
I do believe as this season progresses our run blocking will improve, but no doubt in my mind if he is playing behind a quality OL his numbers are like 5.3 ypc career, which is superb.

I think we will run better against the Bears as we will have fewer stops behind the LOS.
It shows
darren in pdx : 9/15/2020 9:22 pm : link
that the o-line is and continues to be a major issue (we'll know more as the season progresses) in the run game.

It's hard to quantify, but I feel like while Sanders turned course a lot to make room and often lost, Barkley is getting straight up met in the backfield more. I don't think Barkley is choosing to go backward most of the time.
I’ll defend the OL..

For a young unit with no preseason games, going up against Pittsburgh week 1 was a brutal task.

The record for the first years head coaches yesterday was 1-4 with only Rivera winning.

As for Saquon, this team is not good enough to overcome 2nd & +10 off a negative run. The value of a great RB is getting in more 2nd & 5 type situations. Need to figure this out.
...
christian : 9/15/2020 9:33 pm : link
I don't discount it was a hard task. And I don't doubt the line will progress. But the run blocking frankly needs to increase by an order of magnitude just to be bad.
...
christian : 9/15/2020 9:42 pm : link
He's got another 70+ 1-yard carries, with two last night. Over half his career carries have gained a yard or less.
It is so disgusting to watch
NewBlue : 9/15/2020 9:43 pm : link
A "Generational talent" give us what we have been seeing with Barkley. Not his fault but I suppose proving the value of the OL vs. the Stud back when drafting. Thanks DG

Yards before contact 1.8yds - 32nd out of 47
after contact - 2.8 yards - 7th...

No doubt the line has been bad, 2018 very similar

However, when I watch Barkley I see an amazing runner, not an amazing RB

Through 2 years plus a game, I think of Sanders a lot watching Barkley.
Time is on his side

I think they are building a solid line and I think Garrett and columbo are the right fit.
Let's see how the season plays out.

Has been shown just attack the line destroy the running lanes take the run out of the game they lack the ability to beat you deep or get real separation. This team may get several big plays but not enough to scare any team from making our young QB beat them. They just lack the necessary talent to challenge a defense.

had the right idea with the check downs. We just need to design the whole offense around it. Forget hand offs and forcing the ball to engram. Base the entire offense on short passing and screens to Barkley. Keep teams honest with a couple of deep threats.

It's hard to quantify, but I feel like while Sanders turned course a lot to make room and often lost, Barkley is getting straight up met in the backfield more. I don't think Barkley is choosing to go backward most of the time.

It's obvious Barkley is focusing on going North/South to hit the line rather than going E/W to find an opening. He was knocked for the E/W running under Shurmur when the line couldn't open any straight line gaps. I believe once this line gets its straight line run blocking down we'll see some spectacular plays by Barkley which will open the entire offense up. This is a different coaching crew. I don't believe we're seeing the same OL performance the Giants will have later. They may not end up great but I firmly believe they will be noticeably better than we've seen in a while. Takes a few games to gel. Watch the left side. In about 5 games Barkley will be running through that regularly.
It's not just the O-line which I hope improves as season progresses.
jsuds : 9/16/2020 6:54 am : link
Barkley is pretty much the Giants ONLY weapon that scares teams. He is always going to be the focus of the opposing defenses game plan. The Steelers were very successful at that and our play calling didn't help as Barkley was the only back, on an island frequently. At this stage perhaps more two tight end formations and a fullback or lead back would give him a chance to not be hit two yards deep every time. I saw numerous times Monday where Thomas blocked down leaving the Steelers a free end rusher who got Barkley more often than not. This coaching staff will figure that out.
Barkley models himself after Sanders
joeinpa : 9/16/2020 7:24 am : link
Sanders danced behind the los looking for the big play, which seemed to happen every game. However, it resulted in tackles behind the line almost every game as well.

There was a reason he was often left out of goal line packages.

I watched Barkley for many years at Penn State. He was a home run player, but had many stops for losses, it wasn’t all on the line.

He has never been a back that runs over people, like an Elliot. The play before Jones’ interception, Barkley might have scored if he had lowered his shoulder and run over that safety.

That s not his style. What you are seeing is what Barkley is. If the Giants ever get a line that gets push, opens some holes, he will be making big plays again. But he is not, and never has been a back that grinds out yardage.

Lines of Scrimmage : 9/16/2020 7:58 am : link
actually talked about Barkley learning to get the tough yards. Run blocking will take a couple games with this OL. New scheme and some new players at spots. But they need to be better.

The other thing alluded to is teams will scheme to take Barkley out. The Giants receivers don't scare the better defenses. So either the OL can handle this or they will need to have better weapons that exploit this imo.

GiantEgo : 9/16/2020 7:59 am : link
While Barkley has been the victim of poor line play he also has holes in his game that hurt the team. His Poor blocking, dropped passes, not taking a three yard gain and instead losing yardage - I don't see the kind of player that does the little things that translate into consistent wins.

I don't think the problem is dancing
SLIM_ : 9/16/2020 9:16 am : link
as it seems there is a split no this. Outside of a couple games last year when he returned from injury and tried to do too much (and couldn't).

He is getting hit in the backfield way too often. I think we have the personnel on the line (when I say personnel, it isn't just talent but work ethic). The line will get better and more cohesive.

Some posters have mentioned nobody on offense to scare. I think that is why there has been a focus on adding wide receiver speed as we are going to be a run / play action team when we get the pieces.

I was very disappointed in the tight end blocking. Engram is Engram. Enough said on that. I have high hopes for Smith but didn't think he or Toilolo ad a particularly good game blocking either.

Chicago defense is good but nowhere near Steelers and Quinn didn't play last week - we get a little breather.
If you look at last year..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/16/2020 9:19 am : link
Barkley's avg yards before contact was the lowest in the league. By a half of a yard! That's significant. And that's not indicative of "dancing" it is indicative of backfield penetration.
Realistically, the Giants were going to lose the first 4 games
Ivan15 : 9/16/2020 9:22 am : link
And hopefully, they might win one of them. Very optimistically, they win 2 of 4.

They are still on track. Just looking for improvement on offense and defense each week, so they split the last 12 games.
If you wanted Chubb, Nelson or a QB,
Big Blue '56 : 9/16/2020 9:23 am : link
he’s a “dancer.”

Otherwise, so absurd.
Barkley
Cap'n Bluebeard : 9/16/2020 10:12 am : link
I didn't see much dancing on Monday night, just straight up guys in the backfield before he even had a chance to do more than secure the handoff. I think the "dancers" had more of a point his first two years, and it's certainly possible he's still got some dancing in him, but he appeared to be more decisive on Monday night despite the easy penetration by the Steelers. Time will tell.

God, imagine what could be if we even had just below average run blocking instead of putrid?

Exactly. And when you have a back who relies on stopping and cutting, backfield penetration is a killer.
