After all the bitching and moaning by BBI on LW...

Quote:

-Leonard Williams was the most disruptive and consistent player along the NYG front. He finished with 5 tackles / 1 sack / 2 TFL / 1 pressure. A lot of eyes are going to be on the franchised player who some are still looking down on because he was traded for. If he plays like this, we can seal the deal as a win for the NYG organization.

I completely agree. That sack he had on Big Ben was just ruthless. Completely overpowered his man and drove him back then grabbed Ben with one hand and brought him down. I hate comparisons but it was very LT-esque. It was insane and I'm shocked it's not being talked about more.
I agree
darren in pdx : 9/16/2020 1:29 pm : link
on the defense, that was the most encouraging sign to me. They played faster and more confident than the last few seasons. Hopefully they can add some playmakers in the upcoming draft. Hoping to see improvement in the o-line over the next couple of weeks, if it continues the way it is this team will be lucky to win any games.

I thought he played great too when I zeroed in on him. Glad to see it was a good game all around from Sy's eyes.
I knew that Gates and Fleming struggled
widmerseyebrow : 9/16/2020 1:39 pm : link
Zeitler turning to dog shit would just be another horrific turn when it comes to FA lineman and this team.
But..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/16/2020 1:52 pm : link
But..But..the Giants could have signed LW cheaper as a FA!!

Fireable offense!!
By the way..
FatMan in Charlotte : 9/16/2020 1:55 pm : link
one correction. Shepard did do things in the first half. He had two receptions on the first drive.

One observation. The tandem of Lawrence and Williams was disruptive on several plays. It really looked like the interior D was much better. Above average certainly
That is a great review Sy, thank you.
DonQuixote : 9/16/2020 2:01 pm : link
I thought during the 19-play drive, let's call it 18 ... during those 18 plays, the Giants O was out-gritting one of the toughest Defenses in the league. I agree with the positive signs on our D, but I think there were signals of a culture change throughout.
Inside DLs are a dime a dozen
arniefez : 9/16/2020 2:09 pm : link
Snacks Harrison wasn't even drafted 3 years later he was an All Pro. Inside DLs are like RBs easy to find cheaply by the good teams.

There are ZERO championship contenders without multi edge rushers. The Giants have none. Zip. Nada. Zilch.

This team goes nowhere until they have multiple dangerous edge rushers.

I must be learning this game more and more
djm : 9/16/2020 2:10 pm : link
Because that review is word for word what I saw too.

Best thing I did was stop watching the rbs and qb when the ball is snapped. Watch the lines. Gates was brutal.
Leonard Williams is a damn good player
djm : 9/16/2020 2:11 pm : link
Let’s go remind the jets they were laughing at the giants for two things:

Taking Williams off their hands for mid round picks
Allowing darnold to fall to them

Fucking idiots. Always were and always will be.
Reason why the jets couldn’t wait to dump Williams
djm : 9/16/2020 2:12 pm : link
Is he was due a pay raise and the jets are weird with money and they drafted the amazing and flawless quenin Williams. Spelling is off but the next big play that dude makes will he his first.
thank you Sy

Key takeaway for me..TE
morrison40 : 9/16/2020 2:16 pm : link
Garrett had Witten, Judge had Gronk...Giants have Engram !
Change is in the wind !
Slayton
Dragon : 9/16/2020 2:22 pm : link
If this kid can remain injury free he has the tools to rewrite the Giants receiver records easily. Jones looked up and down most have to agree this is almost his team. Barkley to much talent to never mark any kind of difference in the run game for four quarters. Other than that they still can’t score enough points, the OL is still way behind talent wise. We need additional speed on offense it’s a glaring problem, Shepard & Tate same type players won’t put fear into any defense is Shepard tradable for a speed receiver? Engram is just a small TE tease he had a great camp but once again disappeared during a game.

LW got a sack will we see that again anytime soon comparing him to LT is a criminal act. He sacked Ben but most QB easily slide away from that sack both our sacks were coverage sacks. Lawrence is I playing the wrong position put the guy at NT he’s big, he’s fast and he’s powerful. They could not stop the run in the second half the game was close but the other team never really seemed concerned. They played at right about our team level and still won easily a somewhat close game much different talent level. LB’s made a bunch of tackles but none to get the defense off the field. Our secondary is an Achilles heel don’t see that changing anything soon. Pitt beat us without doing anything really creative and it look very easy for them. On special is Peppers a better return guy than safety he sure looked like it. In a 10 round fight they fought hard & well for three rounds, kept taking body shots for five rounds and the last two just tried to stay on their feet. In the end it’s a loss game two will tell us more but it seems like another talent deprived team once again.

Thoughts on Xmen?
Nice review.......
Simms11 : 9/16/2020 3:13 pm : link
Oline needs tons of work. I’m not sure the Oline is any better right now, with exception of Thomas, then it was last year. I sure hope game reps will help them develop sooner then later. I don’t want to be talking draft again in November this year! I think they’ll be patient with Gates, unfortunately it’s one area of the team that I don’t think DG has adequately addressed yet.

The Defense looked much more cohesive then last year. They’re a playmaker or two away from being a top 10 D IMO. It’s unfortunate that McKinney couldn’t be playing right now and gaining precious experience because I truly think he could be an x-Factor in the secondary.

On Offense, we already addressed Oline, but the TEs and RBs need to do a much better job blocking as well. This offense could also be really good with better blocking, of course. I also think the Giants need to be looking for a WR compliment to Slayton on the other side. Is Slayton a true #1 or do we need to get one?!
Thanks Sy

Very good point you make regarding the new coaching staff and how we should see a big jump in performance. Maybe they look to have Ballentine serve as a reserve.

Very concerning regarding Zeitler.

Xavier's injury is such a bummer, but he'll hopefully be back by midseason. That can be quite an impactful return.
good review, Sy', thanks
ColHowPepper : 9/16/2020 3:47 pm : link
I think Dickerson needs to be back on this team--he can block and he can catch. I've averred 'til the cows come home that EE is not a TE and cannot be used that way in line, just cannot; how many years of failure does it take to persuade FO and coaches

I disagree with the good coverage comment on Love; he missed assignments, he was caught way behind in crossing routes a couple of times, and his pathetic effort on a late Steeler run (pass reception) down the far sideline, looked like a business decision to wave at a half-hearted tackle attempt.

Ballentine: continues to be a real problem; spot on comments that he is poor in anticipation and in reaction. It's like the supposed athleticism leaves his body

pj had good comments on the woeful DJ pass interception to 'cap' the 19-play drive. He mis-read the speed at which Dupree (?) or other player was closing and simply didn't react in time--just should have shoveled it oob.
Engram
stretch234 : 9/16/2020 4:03 pm : link
Stop asking Engram to be an in-line blocker. They ask him to block as if he is a 260 lb TE. Using him as an in-line blocker just creates disappointment. Use him to threaten the defense
Thanks

Not concerned at all with Zietler struggles because I think Shane Lemieux is going to replace him anyway by mid season, plus we should see Matt Peart at right tackle, its the center position that will not have a player on the current roster to help the position, I hope they can find someone to help, the worst position on the OLine to be horrible.
The Giants offensive line prowess of the 1980s
M.S. : 9/16/2020 4:56 pm : link

Probably begins with the signing of Center Bart Oats.

And Center Shaun O'Hara solidified matters a decade or two later.

Either Joe Judge and his staff solidifies this position over the next two or three years, or they will not be sporting a winning record.

is an odd take.

Steelers ran for 141 yards at a clip of 4.7 yards per carry.

And they did that with a backup running back going over 100 yards, All-Pro Guard David DeCastro out and I think the loss of two other Olineman in the second half.

Yes, lets sign Leonard Williams as soon as able for whatever he wants.

Lord.

I think the Steelers are feeling good about their backup running back and olineman going forward.
And I bet the Giants..

think more like Sy and happy about Williams, instead of thinking like a disgruntled, previously banned poster holding onto yet another hot take for months.

So are you saying Sy is full of shit in saying Williams had a good game or will you dance around that and take another swipe at the Williams signing?

140+ yards and 4.7 yards per carry from a backup RB and OL. Presumably this isn't what our DL was looking for in this matchup.

Don't worry about Sy...you can speak for yourself. We are all waiting on pins and needles.

Rory, wtf is that response about? widmers is a solid poster. He is simply reflecting what I suspect a lot of us are leary of given Sy's writeup--yes, that is Sy', not wider--if he is in the crapper "would just be another horrific turn" is absolutely the case, it WOULD be another FA OL gone to shit. Would IS CONDITIONAL. Let's see what next week brings, but Zeitler was pretty crappy all 2019

Depends on the price, right?

If he is making plays behind the line of scrimmage every week and putting pressure on the QB every week...he will be in line for a big contract. Every team needs to have a cap on what they will spend on a guy.

So, its a win if he plays at an elite level.

my dude, I respect your takes, but we must have been watching different games. Giants DL was kicking ass in the first half. The last drive of the half, yeah, there were some breakdowns. But the DL was really coming at Ben for most of the game and knocking him down a lot.

We were a bad decision away from winning the game late in the 3rd. Once that pick happened, that’s tough to come back from.

I know you just want to say “well we still lost.” Well I say, new team, new coach, new schemes, hardly any practices, no pre season games. And we hung with a SB contender for 3 quarters. Our QB who has played 13 games hung with a hall of famer all night. Not too fucking shabby if you ask me.

Ryan - I am all-in on the team improving and there were some good takeaways from the game against a better team.

But I really expected the supposedly most talented area of the team, the Giants DLine, to shut down their running attack. But how can we give kudos to our DL starters, like Leonard Williams, when the Steelers got such good production out of backups?

Did they gain their yards in some other fashion that we can give a pass to the DL? I am all ears if I missed what happened.

to run the ball, seems to me Garrett is going to have to play Penny as a blocking back and forego a receiver. Parcells made a career out of successfully running the ball using a blocking fullback. If Penny is able to consistently open a lane for Barkley, play action by Jones will be a devastating weapon and should be good for enormous gains and occasionally touchdowns.

The point of personnel acquisition, whether it be trade/free agency/draft is to get good football players. Economics always play a part in whether or not the good players stick around, everyone has a limit.

If Willams ends up providing good play, are we really still upset about not having a 3rd round pick? That...odds are...won't pan out?
