Sy, LW is a good player...he has always been disruptive
George from PA : 9/17/2020 4:40 am : link
His stats do not follow....and we live in the PFF world.

The D Coordinator has 2 DLmen on the field....and BBI blames them for allowing 140 yds rushing.

If they bother to watch....most of the successful runs were outside toward the edge....now many where caused by Pitts holding, but the NFL did not call holding this week....

The DL with Blake should keep running inside in check
Drafting
jeff57 : 9/17/2020 6:33 am : link
Correct. Look at the Steelers’ drafts, Then look at the Giants’ drafts. Night and day.

Leonard Williams was the most disruptive and consistent player along the NYG front. He finished with 5 tackles / 1 sack / 2 TFL / 1 pressure. A lot of eyes are going to be on the franchised player who some are still looking down on because he was traded for. If he plays like this, we can seal the deal as a win for the NYG organization.

with all due respect to Sy, if he walks after this season, how is that a win for the Giants?

Depends on the price, right?

If he is making plays behind the line of scrimmage every week and putting pressure on the QB every week...he will be in line for a big contract. Every team needs to have a cap on what they will spend on a guy.

So, its a win if he plays at an elite level.

if he plays at an elite level then signs a big contract elsewhere next year, how is that a win for the Giants?

Sure if we win the NFCE or better, I don't mind paying for the short term rental, but if we don't, how does that help the team medium or long term?

The point of personnel acquisition, whether it be trade/free agency/draft is to get good football players. Economics always play a part in whether or not the good players stick around, everyone has a limit.

If Willams ends up providing good play, are we really still upset about not having a 3rd round pick? That...odds are...won't pan out?

If he provides good play and then walks after a non play off year, yeah I’m still upset about giving away a third and a fourth.

Probably begins with the signing of Center Bart Oats.

And Center Shaun O'Hara solidified matters a decade or two later.

Either Joe Judge and his staff solidifies this position over the next two or three years, or they will not be sporting a winning record.

True that.

I was expecting more from him after the trade, and just have not seen it.
I know it is only one game, but he was "average" last year and his first game this year shows more of the same. I really was hoping he just had an off year perhaps due to an untold injury which nagged him.

If he is in fact not the player he once was, we must pray that the OL of 2021 is productive with Lemiuex and Hernandez at OG and Gates at OC; Peart at RT. An infusion of talented youth would be most rewarding.

To me the issue is paying for top shelf production before you get it. Monday night doesn't prove anything about Leonard Williams. It shows what he is capable of and has never consistently been in his career. Yeah, 12 to 15 games of that player and nobody will complain. But if Williams was this last season nobody would have complained about the trade then either. Of course, he wouldn't have been available to us.
Hearing that Andrew Thomas...
RC in MD : 9/17/2020 9:22 am : link
performed well against a top pass rusher despite the lack of an offseason gives me comfort that we made the right call in drafting him over the other two (not taking anything away from their talent) as our future at LT. I also agree with Sy in that I want to see the Giants run behind him and Hernandez against the Bears.

is an odd take.

Steelers ran for 141 yards at a clip of 4.7 yards per carry.

And they did that with a backup running back going over 100 yards, All-Pro Guard David DeCastro out and I think the loss of two other Olineman in the second half.

Yes, lets sign Leonard Williams as soon as able for whatever he wants.

Lord.

1) Nobody is saying to re-sign Leonard Williams based on one game.

2) The numbers don't tell the whole story. Our DL completely jammed up the interior running game. Much of Pittsburgh's yardage were on a few big plays to the outside where their OL were able to get on much smaller 3-4 OLB's because we playing more big nickel/fewer down linemen against the passing game.
Peart, Lemieux, Penny
lugnut : 9/17/2020 10:07 am : link
Sy said he expects Peart to start mid-season, based on Fleming's shite play. Based on Zeitler's shite play, I wonder if we will/should see Lemieux?

Was our FB, Eli Penny, on the field AT ALL? I'd be very curious to see Barkley running to the left behind Thomas, Hernandez, and Penny.
Barkley
Darth Paul : 9/17/2020 10:48 am : link
is great, loved him at 2. Think he is the greatest back in the league. I was wrong. We should have taken OL. We are wasting him. He is basically a not factor for us, and no one can use him properly. We would be better off with another stud OL and let Barkley go. I am glad we did not draft a QB, only one I liked is Mayfield (Wrong Again?) He is completely wasted in our offense and it is not his fault.
I know he was dog shit run blocking
cjac : 9/17/2020 11:05 am : link
But Gates did a pretty good job pass blocking in this game. I know it’s not saying much but there were positives. I guess we will see how bad they think he was if Pulley starts this week.
It was an amazing game
HomerJones45 : 9/17/2020 11:33 am : link
we had these disruptive interior linemen, this stud inside linebacker, a qb with "balls of steel", a once in a lifetime running back, had this 9 minute, 19 play drive, wise and crafty front office management and this amazing wideout- and couldn't get a td from the 3 yard line, got run on to the tune of 140 yards, let Big Ben work off the rust and got shut out after the first quarter until the game was out of reach.

Yep, the team showed incredible progress. You guys would make Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Heidi, and Pollyanna seem like pessimists.

Plenty of positives against one of the leagues best. Let’s carry it over to Chicago, a much more winnable game. Excited to see what they can do.

First he removes his dick out of the mouth of the blowup doll that eerily resembles Tom Coughlin, then he pisses on Corn Flakes and takes a gigantic gulp
Great
AcidTest : 9/17/2020 11:51 am : link
review. Thanks.

The team still needs an infusion of talent at several positions, most notably a real quality EDGE rusher. We don't have that right now. Teams that don't have a lot of talent basically need to play mistake free football to have a reasonable chance to win, especially against a high quality opponent like Pittsburgh. We didn't, so we lost. But Judge seems well positioned to get the most out of these players and their talent.

Stop asking Engram to be an in-line blocker. They ask him to block as if he is a 260 lb TE. Using him as an in-line blocker just creates disappointment. Use him to threaten the defense

With you 100pct but isn't this likely his shot to show 'want to' and ability to be coached under the new regime?
My take differs than most on this thread
Dinger : 9/17/2020 1:35 pm : link
I took the wait and see attitude with LW. After this game I think it is Dexter Lawrence who should be the highest paid player. Often double teamed, still chugging down field and likely taking pressure off of LW and other defenders with his presence. I'm not saying Williams isn't good. He's got talent, but I still take Dex over him and I think Dex helps HIS game out more than LW helps Dex's game out.

The encouraging thing I get from this is Andrew Thomas. Its one game but man if he can be he corner stone we've been looking for for a decade that'd be great. IF this coaching staff can live up to their 'teaching' mantra, maybe Gates improves and we only have to worry about RT. BUT, from my uneducated eye, I felt like there were too many times where the WHOLE line was kaput. They need to eliminate that, too.
