Talkin' Giants: Giants Week 1 Offensive Line Report

I've enjoyed several Bobby Skinner YouTube videos. He is very informative and has a lot of nice film breakdown. I think you'll find this analysis very insightful.

This is really good - its refreshing to hear someone talk who has some

basic knowledge. Too many just go OL sucks, or look at whoever is closest to the DL player and blames him. I thought Hernandez looked much better than a lot here say, and this shows it. He and Thomas did a fairly good job. It also shows the TE's are as much a problem in blocking as Fleming
As best as I could assess

from GamePass, Hernandez was fine..
Simple, sensible and easy to understand.

My assessment after re-watching
Breeze_94 : 9/18/2020 1:14 am : link
To me, it looked like the Steelers front 7 was playing at a different speed. Varsity vs JV.  This is a combination of things.

1. Better players- Dupree, Watt, Bush,  Heyward, Tuitt etc.. across the board they have elite talent.

2. Predictable- Pitt played aggressive and downhill, seemed like they were keyed in on running plays and loading the box since they weren't threatened over the top very often.

3. Poor match-ups/play design- asking Hernandez to cut off a speedy LB at the second level, Zeitler to pull across formation and block Dupree, Engram to go 1v1 with an EDGE guy ETC.

The blocking scheme seemed to not put the Giants personel in favorable positions. Hernandez and Zeitler are, mauler types. Asking them to execute blocks out in space and constantly reach doesn't make much sense. Get them moving downhill, not laterally.
Nice informative analysis

for someone such as myself who is not that knowledgeable regarding line play and blocking schemes. Thanks for posting
Great to watch

So after one game we have three starters on the OL who played like crap. Gates in his first year at center of course needs to be given more time. Zeitler and Fleming are long time vets.Fleming has never started more than 7 games in a year dont expect him to play better. Zeitler has been a very good player for a long time. Is this one bad game or a trend? Are Peart and Lemieux futures starters and what is there upside.Looks like we have for now two young and very good lineman.
Somewhat reassuring
SLIM_ : 9/18/2020 6:44 am : link
I think it is a reasonable assumption that Gates will only get better at center.

I think it is even more reasonable that Zietler didn't fall off a cliff. The guy is only 30 and most lineman don't regress that rapidly. We have seen it with O'Hara and Snee so you would think at somepoint we would get some luck.

Tight ends ... Engram is never going to be a dominant blocker and it is debatable if we can get him to be average. There is no reason to believe that Smith can get better and he was a pleasant surprise last year. If Toitolo doesn't improve, we have Tomlinson. If improvement isn't there, expect to see more of a fullback or 3 receiver sets.

Bears have a good defense but in now way do they have the depth of top end talent that the Steelers do.
I know nothing about OL play
arniefez : 9/18/2020 8:57 am : link
I just yell from my chair. The Giants need Hernandez to be better than fine. They need him to be really good. Thomas too. Winning teams have really good OLs. Not all five but at least 2 or 3. Especially when you use a top 5 and top 25 pick to get them on your team.

Hernandez was a top 25 pick? That's news to me, and the rest of the world for that matter...

The New York Giants selected Hernandez in the second round (34th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft.
If Fleming doesn’t improve and Peart is not ready, there are other

options ... they could move Gates back to RT where he showed promise last year, and go with someone else at center ... though
I’m not suggesting Pulley. Justin Britt is still out there and should be getting healthier by the day.

good analysis, some plays were doomed from the start - I hope the coaching staff realizes that also after reviewing the film.
On the last clip...
Brown_Hornet : 9/18/2020 10:50 am : link
...Zeitler has to block the edge.
Noticed on one of the stunts
rasbutant : 9/18/2020 2:37 pm : link
That gates did well on the DT tries to hold him to keep him from picking up the stunt. This happened on another play (not shown in this video). And I believe on the game thread people were blaming Fleming but it was actually Gates guy, but the defender had two fist full of his jersey and didn’t let him move to kick out.

It’s not always obvious who’s fault it is.

There was another play were Kaden Smith got blasted into the backfield getting in the way of a pulling Zeitler leaving his assignment free to make a play.

Overall the TE’s were terrible but I also wonder about a scheme that has TE’s blocking Watt one on one. I understand if the play is going away from the side but a straight up pass set?!?!

Also the play at the end zone interception. The scheme doesn’t block Dupree not even a chip block. Kaden Smith is right there could have easily chipped him then run his route. Smith wasn’t the first or 2nd or even the 3rd read. All he did was go sit in a crowd of steeler players in the end zone and watch the play. Every play every player has a job, someone please tell me what his job was on that play because to me it looked like a waste. He could have blocked the slipped off as an outlet, the play wasn’t going his way to start.
I half-listened while on another call, is this a fair Summary?

Sounds about right. Zeitler scares me now cause he was a superior OG prior to his tour with NY. I am really hoping it was more of a mental / scheme thing and not physical as he is only 30. He needs to return to form if we are to have an acceptable OL.

Thomas, if he holds up and Peart is starting by season's end and holding his own, well we got something going on then for 2021 and beyond! And if Lemiuex can handle OG for Zeitler for 2021 that would be just GRAVY!

Holy s**t. Thanks for pointing that out. Huge difference. Top 35 pick compared to top 25 pick. My bad.
Awesome stuff, thanks for posting

I thought Toilolo was supposed to be a beast as a blocker? I wasn’t paying that much attention to him, but it seems like he was not beasty this past week.
What a joke
XBRONX : 9/19/2020 5:12 pm : link
PFF is. They gave Hernandez the lowest grade on our line for last week. What game were they watching?
