NYG have been 0-2 every season since 2013 besides one (2016)

Essex : 9/18/2020 3:54 pm
Starting the season 0-2 used to be the death knell of a football season (yes, I know there are teams who have come back from 0-2 to win the Super Bowl including your New York Football Giants in 2007), but it has always been a barometer of impending doom to a season.

I believe from 2002-2018 14 of 133 teams that started 0-2 have made the playoffs, which is 11 percent. Coincidentally, the one season since the start of the 2013 season that we did not got 0-2 is 2016; and, of course, we made the playoffs.

I know many people on here, including myself, do not think the playoffs are realistic this season. I know there is an extra playoff spot this season which make the stats I cited a little less daunting. But, what I want is a competitive season and I would love for a small move in the right direction to come out and win this football game on Sunday. I also think we can do it.
Sunday is a winnable game

The Giants desperately need an early season win. I think this is a 4 win roster but I think the coaching staff can steal 2 or 3 more. This is one of them. Fingers crossed.
We have been pretty shitty

for quite some time. It is comical at this point. But, I do look at this year as its own thing. This season, record wise doesn't mean as much to me (all things considered in and out of football) but, I do care that the needle is pointing up when this season is done.

I believe in Daniel Jones and I think people are way overreacting to the End zone Int. It sucked, there is no doubt about that but, Eli made many, many bonehead plays that we all seem to have moved past from. Jones was trying too hard to win (look how hard it was to move the length of the field)and made a mistake. I can live with that knowing he will do better the next time that happens.

This season is abut growth, not wins and playoffs. If I see the growth then I will feel better about the Gmen and the future. If we suck and look the same as the last few years then things are just not getting better and that is bad for the long term.

I agree with your opinion on Jones and this season 100%.
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/18/2020 4:37 pm : link
I think Jones will make mistakes but I think the criticism can be a good thing. One of the things I really respected about Eli was through all that criticism (and it heavy) he came through in the biggest of moments. If Jones can't overcome the criticism now then he most likely won't get to where the team needs him to be to be a championship one. I bet you Eli gained a lot of respect from the team for what he handled.

If I’m wrong, but I think Giants win Sunday. We start 1-1.

The Bears aren't exactly a juggernaut. They've finished at or below .500 in each of the last 7 seasons with one exception (2018) where they were promptly disposed of in the WC game.

I'll gladly take Daniel Jones over Trubisky.

The Bears certainly don't suck, but this is a winnable game.

Not as if the Giants haven't been getting beat up on by mediocre teams over the past couple of years. I don't know. Giants win, 13-8.

I just think the Bears are the type of team we will match up relatively well with.

They have a good defense, but I think the one we just faced from PIT is better/tougher. We should be able to move the ball and score some points. Not expecting 30+ but I do think 24-27 is realistic.

Trubisky just doesn't scare me as a passer and I think we'll play the run well and force him to win the game for them. I don't trust that he can do it.

I think Barkley will have a better week... I mean, shit, he has to. Really nowhere to go but up from a 6 yard performance on the ground. We may have Tate back which will help. I expect Jones to play well.

I think it'll be a bit higher scoring than you, but I think the Giants win by about the same margin. I could see something like 27-24 or 24-20.

If we don't, I'm not sure I see a W until Week 6 against the WFT.

So, this is a big one.
Everyone seems to think this is such a winnable game
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/18/2020 7:55 pm : link
The Bears came back from being down 23-6 in the 4th quarter and scored 21 unanswered points.

I don't know that I would be laying money on this.

If DeAndre Swift caught a perfectly thrown ball right into the end zone, the Bears don't even win that game at all.

The Lions lost it more than the Bears won it.

This is a winnable game. Saying that doesn't mean anything other than exactly that. You don't think the Giants have any shot to beat them? This isn't the 85 Bears. They're a decent team at best.

I'm not laying money on the game, but I really don't look at the Bears as some gigantic challenge. This is the most winnable game we're going to get until Washington in week 6.
I'm not saying they're gonna get blown out or anything
Ten Ton Hammer : 9/18/2020 8:08 pm : link
but in the context of the Giants, they can lose to teams that are 'just decent' very easily. You hold another NFL team scoreless, a good offensive team at that, and mount a three-score comeback, that is a testament to your defense.

They played last season too, and the Giants lost a not so competitive game. The score was 19-14 with the bears only allowing the 2nd TD really late.

I thought I heard the lions
Pete from Woodstock : 9/18/2020 8:09 pm : link
Lost their two starting corners late in the game. That would definitely help with the comeback the bears and Mitchell had.
arcarsenal : 9/18/2020 8:16 pm : link
Of course, the Giants don't instill a whole lot of confidence - nor should they. We're a ways away from being able to look at a game and feeling like the Giants are just flat out the better team - even now. I don't think we'll really be able to say that at any point this year.

We'll have a small edge in some games. But that's about it. I don't think we'll be overwhelming favorites in any game we play.

I think it's just more the way I look at the Bears. They were awful offensively last year. One of the worst offenses in football. I don't see that changing a whole lot this year - they're probably still a bottom 3rd offense when all's said and done.

I feel like if the Giants can manage a clean game, they can and should win.

More dumb mistakes and turnovers in the opponents end zone, then yeah... we're probably looking at 0-2.
Winnable game =
arniefez : 9/18/2020 8:17 pm : link
a game that the Giants are underdogs but have a chance to pull an upset. I think the Bears are the 3rd best team in their division. If that's an automatic loss for some people they must think this is a 2 win team.
What's really the big deal
Route 9 : 9/19/2020 12:22 am : link
if they don't win? These 0-5, 0-6, 1-7, 1-8... 2-11 "starts" to the season have become routine around here.

I'm used to it. Ask the chicken.
We've been bad for a while
AcesUp : 9/19/2020 1:44 am : link
We are literally the worst team in the NFL the last 3 seasons. I don't have high expectations for this season and I shouldn't..but we're in the 3rd year of a "rebuild". Why do I still have low expectations? Other organizations have bottomed out and bounced back since then. A lot of this falls on that awful first offseason but we've been churning this roster a ton and still don't have stability. I'm trying to be optimistic, and it should be easy because I'm bullish on Jones, but it does feel like the Giants are kind of stuck in the mud. I can't shake the impression that we're on the wrong side of a shift in how the game is played and how information is utilized.

There are things I liked about the first game, I definitely took the moral vicotry with the play of certain young guys and the way we competed. Some things are concerning though. The lack of aggression on 4th down early against a superior opponent - that is clearly the time to take chances. The offensive playcalling did do some things well but wasn't really inspiring. Jones was one of the better QBs using RPO last year, we didn't even bother last week. Presnap motion is ubiquitous in the NFL today, most of the top offenses are among the leaders deploying it, we were dead last in Week 1. I'm holding out judgement on Garrett but Week 1 didn't do much to alleviate the fear that we may once again be stuck in the past.
I saw a lot of good effort against Pittsburg ...
short lease : 9/19/2020 2:54 am : link

Not sure what I will see this week ... but, if the effort is there - sooner or later we will win. And, sooner or later we will put together a string of wins that will get us into the playoffs and who knows what will then at that point? In the mean time as long as Gettleman drafts wisely we will be right back on top. 2-3 years .... SUPERBOWL !!!!
The good news is that Jones is ahead of where Eli was after 13 starts.
Big Blue Blogger : 9/19/2020 10:02 am : link
I think he’s ahead of where most young QBs are at this stage, and he’ll approach his ceiling - whatever it is - relatively quickly. So he probably won’t be the factor that holds the team back. Considering the controversy surrounding his selection, that’s a pretty big deal. And I think Golden Tate can still help Jones a lot.

The bad news is that practically every other part of the team could easily be that constraining factor. Run defense is pretty good. Kicking game looks OK. Otherwise, the Bears’ coaching staff has their pick of weaknesses to exploit. If Chicago (or any other opponent) executes well, they should beat the Giants. That could change, and maybe on Sunday the breaks and mistakes will split in the Giants’ favor.

That’s where we currently are: a bad team that deserves to be an underdog every week; a team every opponent can reasonably expect to beat. So 0-2 is likely. But the Giants will beat some mediocre teams like Chicago, and they can be competitive in a weak division with a few breaks and good injury luck.
Looking at possible 0-5
Reale01 : 9/19/2020 4:45 pm : link
If we lose this week and a 1-7 first half of the season if we lose this week.

Pretty big game IMO.
