@AdamSchefter

Giants fear RB Saquon Barkley suffered a torn ACL today, sources tell me and @JordanRaanan. One source said the torn ACL was “certainly within the realm” but there will be more tests Monday to make a full and complete determination.

I think

Jon Hilliman is still unsigned.
If Barkley does have a torn ACL, I believe D. Lewis can be effective
SGMen : 9/20/2020 4:07 pm : link
I hate injuries. Horrible the way it was a "non-contact" ACL injury. Lets hope the MRI shows only a partial tear of something at worst.
NFL is
Lines of Scrimmage : 9/20/2020 4:07 pm : link
a hard line of work. Best to SB and his recovery.
I'd
AcidTest : 9/20/2020 4:09 pm : link
be surprised if he didn't tear his ACL given how much pain he was clearly experiencing and the way he landed. Best wishes to him.
I hope he comes back stronger

That is unfortunately possible, but an unknown obviously.

Come on now....

that was 60 years ago. Modern medicine has completely changed the significance of an ACL injury. Look across the league at how many guys have come back from ACL injuries.

He may have to go the Ottis Anderson/Rodney Hapmpton route by putting on weight and becoming a between-the-tackles power back.

You don’t take a RB at #2 overall (aside from the fact that they have no impact on wins and losses) - they don’t last. I’ll continue to say it...absolutely brutal pick by Gettleman. At least we likely won’t be exacerbating it by spending a ridiculous amount to extend him.
What the best case we can be hoping for here

Unfortunately he’s now damaged goods.

Think carefully about a 2nd contract now, NYG.

I feel bad for the Giants as well because he’s supposed to be a big piece and now he’s gone. Timing is horrible with a contract decision looming, there is absolutely no way in the world the Giants can offer him serious money. He’ll have to come back on his rookie deal and prove he’s the same guy next season. Even then I think letting him walk will prove to be the right move.

Whatever happens I don’t want Gettleman making the call.

That makes him a wasted pick in this NFL. You have to hope he fully recovers, as many athletes do from ACL injuries these days. Unfortunately, this means he very likely misses part of next season also, so this could essentially kill 2 years of his rookie deal. That leaves him playing for a contract in the final year.
ACLs aren't career killers anymore really
Sonic Youth : 9/20/2020 4:25 pm : link
Hopefully he can come back strong. Waste of a year on his rookie contract though, as others have said.

Depending on severity, next year could be a bit of a wash. Eecovery is usually more than a year. There is a good chance he would miss camp next year depending on when he has surgery...assuming he needs it.

Right now, our best bet is this comes back as a sprained or hyperextended knee.
Gallman gets his chance, and we should also look at Freeman
PatersonPlank : 9/20/2020 4:25 pm : link
and any other NFL caliber back out there.

If the OL continues to get better we can still compete
feel awful for Saquon
Eric on Li : 9/20/2020 4:26 pm : link
hope it's a non-complicated surgery and he can get himself 100% for next year. He looked like he was running with anger and about to break loose for a big day too.
Are there any decent unsigned RB's out there?
Fishmanjim57 : 9/20/2020 4:26 pm : link
Gettleman has to get off his butt and sign someone, or this season is toast.
I do give them credit for nearly coming back in the second half.
This doesn't change my opinion of picking Barkley
Matt M. : 9/20/2020 4:26 pm : link
He was the guy I wanted then and I still think it was the right move. But, I'm sure you guys would be happier with no running back and Darnold struggling in his 3rd year at QB, right?
Sounds like
Crazed Dogs : 9/20/2020 4:26 pm : link

Adrian Peterson regained his form after a torn ACL. Hope it works out for Saquon but his career is taking on a tragic quality.

Under NO circumstance
Spider43 : 9/20/2020 4:38 pm : link
Should we re-sign him. NONE.
Down their best player, it's a distinct possibility this team
BlueLou'sBack : 9/20/2020 4:38 pm : link
will be picking in the top 5 of the draft again.

And Jones is definitely NOT, to this point in time, ruling out a play for another QB.

I don't think he's comfortable in Garrett's offense yet, but he has some issues that need correcting big time.
Praying Saquon can return to 100% next year.
BlueLou'sBack : 9/20/2020 4:40 pm : link
No one will out work him in rehab.
injuries are part of the game
bc4life : 9/20/2020 4:42 pm : link
obviously, when it's the heart of your offense and the offense wasn't up and running yet - it's a major blow.

They'll bring up Rod Smith, he can play and knows the offense.

Joey in VA : 9/20/2020 4:44 pm : link
You can tell with flexibility tests prior to the MRI, it's a pretty easy diagnosis these days. We may very well be picking 1st, but at least if we take another QB he'll have a LT to protect him.

Getting Penei Sewell would be many steps forward.
