If it dies before going 10 yards then the kicking team has no chance to recover unless you touch it. Like a 3rd baseman guessing a ball would roll foul, these guys guessed it wasn't going to make it 10 yards. Obviously a bad play but I am going on the premise that they're not idiots and the coaches trained them to some extent to not just pounce on a ball that hasn't gone the required distance.

This team hit rock bottom a few years ago. Hired a guy who has no idea how to fix it. And the team is still struggling finding its way. Now injuries are coming into play that could derail the season.
