Did Joe Judge delay the development of this OL?

BlueLou'sBack : 9/20/2020 11:21 pm
His shtick about "versatility" and "multiplicity" might be fine in some sort of abject theoretical sense, but I think this OL, with 3 new starters from last year's quintet, needed to be playing alongside each other as one unit, rather than having guys flip flopped left/right and rotated through many positions during the very limited preseason practices this year, as they reportedly were.

The OL teamwork execution today looked a bit better than last week vs Pitt.
They started playing much better in the 2nd half.

I'll have to rewatch, but they were playing as a 5-man group and coming off the ball hard, in unison. Good to see.
As they get more and more live reps

They will gel.. I liked what I saw in the 2nd half got to be patient
seemed like after the TD they got pumped up
Victor in CT : 9/21/2020 7:18 am : link
and also the late hit attempt on Jones seemed to piss them off.
No he has not

At some point they will make the inevitable change at ROT but Judge has not delayed anything . They haven’t played well as a unit , yet . I don’t like the “conversion “ paradigm at C. Urban Meyer turned 3 excellent guards into mediocre centers in Eiflen , Price and Jordan . But that’s on Mr G.
Actually what he did helped

development. By rotating people they each get a feel for what the other is doing on a particular play. Also, as the injury bug bites, if he needs to move a player, that player will already have a feel for the new position.

Let's also remember in 2007 the team was blown out of the 1st two games and on its way to another loss when Mitchell made a game saving tackle on the 3 yard line. This team has nowhere near that talent, but the point is even a team that talented team needed 3 games to play together, know the system and execute.

Its the Covid that is delaying it. What coach could do this in a few short weeks with no exhibition games?
This thread is really a reach
mfsd : 9/21/2020 8:08 am : link
by all accounts, he flip flopped guys for a practice or two.

Most of us went into the season knowing that the OL could be ugly at times. There we’re no offseason practices prior to training camp.

Not only do the Giants have three new starters but they also have a center who is learning on the job and has never played the position before.

The line will still struggle moving forward but hopefully we will see them improve each week as Thomas and Gates gain more experience and the unit begins to gel.

Right Jay. Plus new staff, new schemes. Also a 2nd year QB learning another new offense. I refuse to make any real judgements until at least halfway through this season. And I thought the OL played pretty well in the second half yesterday.
Line held up pretty well second half
nygiants16 : 9/21/2020 9:14 am : link
with no threat of a running game, quinn and mack both pinning their ears back and nothing
i'm honestly not sure what the question is
UConn4523 : 9/21/2020 9:16 am : link
they were never going to gel in the offseason. They had a limited amount of time to decide the starters, and some shuffling has happened as a result. This shuffling would have happened in preseason and unfortunately we didn't get that opportunity.

The good news in Andrew Thomas continues to hold his own at LT. Many were bracing for him to really struggle from the get go and that hasn't been the case.
last week they played
bigbluehoya : 9/21/2020 9:17 am : link
one of the best 2 or 3 defensive fronts in the league. This week they played another good one, and looked quite a bit better.

I'm not prepared to 'blame' Judge for anything at this point. The team faced a pretty awful set of circumstances after the first quarter of the game yesterday, and fought like hell in spite of it and gave themselves a chance to win the game.

I won't claim a moral victory or go so far as to say it's a surefire sign of heading in the right direction, but I came away from that game rather encouraged, relative to the feeling I've had about the majority of NYG's losses over the last 4-5 years.
It would be a more reasonable question to ask
mfsd : 9/21/2020 9:34 am : link
about the defense. Although I think our defense has done reasonably well scheme-wise, there haven't been any blatantly obvious breakdowns. Our issues there are more related to lack of talent, and at times lack of pressure by sticking to the 3 man rush in passing downs.

As for the OL, the same 5 guys pretty much occupied the same positions all through camp. I can only recall one practice where part of the story was giving Thomas some reps at RT

I do wonder with Gates being so new to playing center, there might be challenges with line calls. But that would be mostly related to inexperience + lack of overall practice time more than swapping positions too much
.

and I think that is mostly due to the Bears out of shape Dline that was huffing and puffing the whole second half. The Bears were also playing softer as they held a lead.
