Thanks Eric, at least i’m not the only one on the board who remembers the great Tucker.
Comparing draft positions and “who we could of”was just becoming a thing then and of course there was no internet. But there was a lot of heat about Tucker, and the Giants were just beginning their entry to darkness. Fifteen more years to go then until LT arrived with new front office, who would have refused to draft a rb (george Rogers) even if they could have instead of the immortal LT.
Hopefully you all don’t have to wait that long, and I won’t be around.
Wish the best to #26. He’ll get maximum benefit that his injury, repair and rehab will allow.

Nah,these are just the facts of life.Judged simply by what Butkus and today's players do,or did,on the field.
because he didn't want to lose a public bidding war contract battle with the AFL. So he had Bill Bidwell negotiating with Namath's agent against Sonny Werblin and the Jets. When the price got too rich Wellington dropped out.
The Giants didn't miss out on Namath because they valued Frederickson more. They lost out because Wellington didn't want to pay Namath.
Career ended because of injury but he was a big RB who was fast. Blew out a knee or something similar before the medical people could do the miracles they did today. But, knocking a pick who never got a chance to show what he could do is not a good way to evaluate. Let some who saw him play before his injury weigh in. I thought he was going to be special.
very good, but not in Gale Sayers' category (great). Even as a kid I was puzzled that the Giants didn't take Sayers, who was incredible in college (and I had seen some of his college games on TV). Obviously Butkus would have been a great pick as well. I understood not pursuing Namath under the circumstances.
He was a worthy 1st round draft pick in that era. But it's highly unlikely any other team would have taken him 1st in that draft. Top half of the 1st round? Sure.
Did you see the rest of the draft for the Giants. They selected a Kicker in the 3rd and a punter in the 5th. WTH??! No wonder they were so bad for so long.
Tucker Frederickson couldn't carry Gale Sayer's ditty bag....
You just had to see the two play in a game or two to realize Frederickson was not nearly in the same game-breaking class as Gale Sayers.
Yeah, I wasn't so direct in my post above, but even at 12 years old, and long before draft info was so prevalent, much less the existence of the internet - I was like WTF? when they passed on Sayers for Tucker. Sayers was amazing in college.
Nothing against Tucker - he was a good player until he got hurt. But we just had that all-time best RB thread here on BBI and, of those who saw Sayers play, pretty much all include him in the top 5 RBs ever. Fantastic return man as well.

Del Shofner -- every time I see your handle it brings a smile to my face. As a young fanatic who lived and breathed the Giants 24/7, Del Shofner was my hero, and I made sure I ended up with #85 when I played Pop Warner Football!

A more overrated player there never was. He was never even the best running back on the Giants. Koy was a better runner and Ron Johnson was on another planet. Frederickson could catch. But he was a Welly favorite so he played.

I cannot prove anything, but many of us thought amongst ourselves, that TF was drafted because he was lily white and handsome. Sayers or Butkus was the slam dunk pick we felt. It was egregiously incompetent. Just fucking incompetent.
At least we aced the Bob Timberlake pick that year.
And became a serviceable blocker for Ron Johnson, Giants 1st 1,000 yd rusher. Could catch the ball out of the backfield, good in pass pro.
But never came close to Butkus, Sayers, etc.
The PR dept. Made a big deal about the ‘Baby Bulls’- Fredrickson, Koy, Mercein, Smith Reed, Bobby Duhon- all stiffs, except that Mercein helped the Pack win the Ice Bowl
it was a passing league even way back then. That is why Namath was going to benefit from a bidding war. Thanks for being a tightwad Wellington. God the 65 to 81 years were brutal.
He was a great blocker and receiver, even after the knee injuries . Between Butkus. Sayers and Frederickson , there were 6 early knee replacements -make book .
I saw him play in a benefit basketball game at Rose Hill in September of 74. This was the game when John Sterling tore an Achilles . Tucker was still built like Adonis but it was painful watching him try to jog up and down the court .
The Giants were a yo-yo program that was stuck in the fifties . Squint was busy handing out positions to Ex players that he favored . But in this particular instance they had an excellent player . It was a shame what happened to him .

way back when, and I'll just say one thing:
Tucker Frederickson couldn't carry Gale Sayer's ditty bag.
In three years at Kansas Sayers rushed for nearly 2,700 yards -- good for a 6.5 yards per carry.
In the same time frame, Frederickson rushed for way less than half that at a 4.2 yard per carry clip.
You just had to see the two play in a game or two to realize Frederickson was not nearly in the same game-breaking class as Gale Sayers.
Not close.
The Giants sucked in the 60s and 70s because their drafts sucked and they made decisions like Frederickson over Sayers.
Sound familiar?

As you probably know, the real Del passed away in March ... age 85, of course.

Yes, indeed — The tributes brought back many fond memories!
As for smiles these days, amen to that. You said it best!

For some reason, Timberlake made 1-15 FGA and that sticks in my mind.
