Reese's Pieces : 9/22/2020 2:00 am
The Giants' 2016 Defense

1) The Giants finished No. 1 overall in touchdowns allowed
2) The Giants finished No. 1 in red zone defense touchdowns allowed.
3) The Giants ranked No. 2 overall in 3rd down percentage conversions.
4) The Giants finished with the No. 2 overall scoring defense fewest total points.
5) The Giants finished No. 3 in completion percentage against.
6) The Giants finished No. 2 in passing touchdowns allowed.
7) The Giants finished No. 2 overall in total interceptions.
8) The Giants finished No. 3 overall in rushing yards against per game.
9) The Giants finished No. 2 in the NFL in rushing yards per carry against.
10) The Giants ranked No. 5 overall in rushing touchdowns allowed.

But that defense was built wrong.
This current defense is being built right.

Was the luckiest in the NFL. Literally like 4 games, we were damn lucky to win
Miracle year

Every single guy playing well, staying healthy. Career years from

Collins
Keenan Robinson
Kelvin Shepphard
Snacks
Jackrabbit
Casillas

Lots of the same pieces and were historically bad in 2017...

Made up for all the bullshit close calls of 2015.

Agreed, but I’ll tell ya Minny, for several years prior, we were the unluckiest in the NFL, or close to it.

That was a very talented defense, full of difficult personalities. There wasn’t anything lucky about that performance, there were a lot of good players on that side of the ball.
That Defense really came together in the second half

of season with nobody able to run on them and Jenkins, Collins and DRC playing out of their minds.

The only "fortunate" thing I recall is how many games they were able to seal with an actual defensive turnover at the very end. Seemed like it happened every week.

I think the Giants

win that game against GB if it were for one thing - and it was NOT the OBJ drop.

DRC going out of that game killed them.

Once he was out - Rodgers destroyed that secondary.

Had DRC not gone out of that game - I think the Giants would have made a serious run at the Super Bowl.

That was a good D! And while the offense was uninspiring, you had some exciting "walkoffs" by Eli and OBJ!
that 2016 defense was not lucky
djm : 9/22/2020 4:44 pm : link
it was good. And the O, while bad, did just enough to win games, which is a very very very underrated attribute to have.

I kept on saying prior to to 2017 that the D was going to need to carry the team while the O got out of its own way and figured things out. I really believed they would because they were elite in 2016. The second that dallas week 1 game slipped away I knew we were dead because the O was SO bad, the D knew it, and they quit. You could absolutely see it in that game. The D tried to hang on for a couple more weeks but with every passing inept quarter of offensive football, the D slipped more and more into fuck this mode. And the rest is history.
and not to derned DG
djm : 9/22/2020 4:48 pm : link
but DG saw that when he came in 2018. I still have a hard time believing that DG went all in on that overall team because he was so quick to dump off the defensive vets on that team. I think he wanted to fix the LT spot and hoped to catch lightning in a bottle, but overall he had to know in his heart that this defensive roster wasn't long for the Giants. The second that season got away from them he dumped them all in a heartbeat. And he should have. Those players quit and that hasn't happened here since 2003, and even 2003 was more injury related. 2017 was gross.
Once everyone decided to take a nap on that

It was like 14-6, I think after the Hail Mary. They were so mentally weak.
