Offensive Package for Peppers...

Capt. Don : 9/22/2020 8:09 am
I mentioned this in Sy's review but it got swallowed up.

With Barkley out for the rest of the year we have obviously lost one of the few dynamic players we have.

Leading up to the draft, Mike Mayock repeatedly said that Peppers' best NFL position was running back. He has shown that he still has great open field vision and juice with his punt return abilities.

I am usually skeptical when it comes to position changes - they just dont seem to work at the NFL level. However, this wouldnt be a position change per se. 5-6 touches/game - getting him the ball in space.

Also, it seems that running back is one of the easier positions to get acclimated to. Aaron Hernandez, Taysom Hill, Ty Montgomery, Cordarelle Patterson among others have had success in the backfield.

thoughts?
if it means a few less D snaps/game

for him, then it's probably worth a shot.
Trouble is we’re light on DBs
BillT : 9/22/2020 8:17 am : link
With the McKinney, Beal, and Baker losses we don’t have enough decent DBs to afford to lose snaps even from Peppers. I’d love to see him get a shot at RB but the secondary shouldn’t be compromised at this point.
Makes Sense?

Barkley couldn’t run behind this line why in Gods name would you think Peppers could. WTF.

Apples to oranges. Teams stacked the box to stop Barkley. I doubt they're playing an 8 man front with Peppers in.
He sure the hell
GiantsRage2007 : 9/22/2020 8:25 am : link
Can't play safety. He's an expensive punt returner.
If there's one guy on the team
LawrenceTaylor56 : 9/22/2020 8:27 am : link
who can switch from defense to offense.. it's Jabrill "Michigan Man" Peppers. Jim fkin Harbaugh saw it, you saw it, the whole world saw it. The man is too talented.

You could use your theory with any running back in the league. So I guess putting ANY running back in is dumb...? Yeah, lets just go 5 wide every play.

Also, Im not talking about lining him up in the I formation, running dive plays.

Middle screens, draw plays, jet sweeps, angle routes, wildcat, Run/Pass option with DJ etc.
The last thing Peppers need is more responsibility
George from PA : 9/22/2020 8:53 am : link
He needs to get his defensive responsibility down pat....as he is still making a ton of mistakes
After 7 years of crappy football, I'm up for anything
Dinger : 9/22/2020 8:54 am : link
I think Judge has it in him to make that change and I have faith that Garret could plan a dozen plays for him. I think he's got play making ability so screens or draws or underneath routes. If he lines up in the backfield can he block? Hell we are 0 and 2 with a fairly tough schedule; might as well try something different if only to keep us fans intrigued.;)

This point is well taken. As poorly as Peppers has played on defense, do we even know who his replacement would be? Ebner? Chandler?
personally I'd rather see them spend time teaching him
Victor in CT : 9/22/2020 9:07 am : link
his responsibility on D, how to take a correct angle to make a tackle, etc.
Peppers is an excellent running back however the

Tyrone Wheatley syndrome will come into effect if he comes in on offense for 5 or 6 plays. You know whose getting the ball and probably know the play.
So desperate
lugnut : 9/22/2020 9:18 am : link
It's just sad, I'm not sure we even fully realize it.

Two games in, and we're talking about converting a former LB, and making him a former S, into RB. No prep for it in camp, no preseason... We're just gonna make him an RB. Such a phenomenal athlete... If he can't make it at LB, and can't make it at S, and doesn't have instincts, and has poor lateral movement, and takes bad angles... Hey, maybe he's just not a very good football player.

And I posted this a few days ago -- Peppers is on record as saying he does NOT WANT to play RB.
How about he learn to play safety better?
GManinDC : 9/22/2020 9:45 am : link
...
Hell, put him in at QB and have him run the wing T
mikeinbloomfield : 9/22/2020 9:59 am : link
Who cares. He's been in the league how long now, and is still taking bad angles? Remember, getting him in the Odell deal was like having a second 1st round pick, according to the braintrust.
peppers was a stop-gap at safety
japanhead : 9/22/2020 10:20 am : link
they hoped would work out as a long-term solution, but was always a sort of desperation fix, as there was no way gettleman was gonna pay collins 15 mil a year and there was no other option on the roster.

he was mediocre to bad last year in an injury-shortened season and has looked totally lost through two games in 2020. i suspect the giants will cut bait after his rookie deal is up and look to draft someone with instincts for the position.
I think he's much better closer to the LoS
Simms11 : 9/22/2020 2:21 pm : link
just like Collins was. Except I've seen Peppers actually make some plays against TEs, whereas Collins had cement in his shoes.
With Gallman inactive last week
rasbutant : 9/22/2020 3:11 pm : link
I won’t have been surprised if he was the next option before Penny if Lewis got hurt.

I don’t think management thinks of him as a stop-gap at safety. DG had him in a yellow jacket when the trade was made.
DG had him in gold jacket? There is no way he actually thought that.
Zeke's Alibi : 9/22/2020 6:59 pm : link
I'm sure he probably talked him up as much as possible because the world was telling him what a fucking terrible trade it was.
